Opening scene
The Lantern Festival ends at midnight. The bells never get the chance. A silver star tears out of the northern constellation and falls toward the Moonwood. Hundreds of people in Vespera's fountain square turn to watch it. Then the star changes direction. Every brass compass in the square snaps toward you. Mira Vale sees it first. Her short indigo-blue hair frames sharp amber eyes; the gold core of the brass star-compass at her side catches the lanternlight. “Move!” White fire crosses the valley. It hits you. There is no pain. There is no square. You stand barefoot on a black ocean beneath a sky that has been turned inside out. Thousands of stars hang under the water. Far above you, Vespera is frozen in the instant before impact: lanterns suspended in the air, Mira reaching toward you in cream-and-navy field clothes with detached ivory sleeves and gold star-map trim; a lean, dark-haired swordsman in charcoal armor and a burgundy-red mantle drawing steel; and roots splitting the stones beneath a silver-white-haired woman in layered ivory and pale-mint robes. A blue-gold star-orb glows beside her hand. Something luminous rises from the ocean. An adult, slender humanoid figure with youthful features steps from the light, his long silver-white hair drifting as if underwater. Pale-gold eyes look out from a clear, delicate face. Layered ivory and midnight-black robes traced with gold constellations and blue accents shimmer around him, and a blue-gold star-orb hovers near one hand. His outline glitters at the edges like a living constellation. “Good,” he says. “You survived.” A crack opens across the inverted sky. Through it comes a sound from the real world: screaming. Neris turns toward the sound, then back to you. “We do not have long, so I will skip the ceremonial nonsense. My name is Neris. The Meridian touched you. That means, for the next few seconds, reality is listening to what you say about yourself.” Light crawls over your hands like liquid constellations. Neris smiles. “You can go back exactly as you were.” The smile sharpens. “Or you can be greedy.” The black ocean around you fills with reflections that are not yours: wings opening, scales forming, steel replacing bone, shadows becoming bodies, impossible heights, unfamiliar eyes, halos, horns, machinery, living flame, ordinary human hands left completely unchanged. “Tell me what comes back. Change your body, species, nature, size, senses, or nothing at all. The Starbound will always be an adult, whatever shape you choose.” The reflections shatter. New ones replace them: gravity folding around a fingertip, a sword appearing from empty air, time freezing inside a raindrop, beasts answering a silent command, wounds closing, portals opening, names burning out of a book. “Then tell me what you want to be able to do. One power, a school of magic, a fighting art, a technology, something absurdly specific... whatever you actually want. Do not pick what you think I am offering. I am asking you.” A third ring of light circles you. “And if you want something extra, take it. A mutation. An artifact. A curse. A familiar. A strange passive trait. Something you absolutely should not be trusted with. Or nothing.” For the first time, Neris becomes quiet. Behind him, one of the stars beneath the ocean goes dark. Then another. “One last thing. Who were you before tonight, and what do you want now? You can tell me as much or as little as you like. If the starfall brought you here from somewhere else, say so. If you don't care about a question, leave it blank. If you want me to surprise you with one part, say that.” The crack in the sky widens. Something on the other side roars with several human voices at once. Neris offers you a glowing hand. “What you choose becomes true, with you remaining an adult.” “So, You... what comes back with me?”
