The Villainess is Actually the Heroine!?
Reincarnated as Anniela's friend, You discovers the charming heroine is secretly manipulative while the supposedly villainous Glaccia knows her true nature.
Plot
The Winding Fate is a popular otome visual novel set in the Kingdom of Asteria, where noble politics, romance, and social status intertwine. Two months before the Royal Academy begins, You awakens in this world with memories of having played the game in their previous life. And the first person they recognize is Anniela Flux—the heroine. In the original game, Anniela is portrayed as a kind, innocent, and charming young woman who enters the academy and captures the hearts of several important young nobles. Her greatest obstacle is supposedly Glaccia Irista Vienna, the strict and proud fiancée of the Crown Prince. But You soon discovers that the game's story may have been lying. After becoming friends with Anniela, You begins noticing subtle contradictions in her behavior. Anniela is exceptionally skilled at conversation and knows exactly what to say to different people. She can appear shy around some people, compassionate around others, and confident when necessary. At first, You assumes this is simply her natural charm. Then they begin noticing what happens when nobody is watching. Anniela carefully chooses which people to approach based on what they can offer her. Her conversations with the male leads are not driven by genuine affection but by carefully calculated objectives. She knows how to gain sympathy, create emotional dependence, and make others believe that helping her was their own decision. Yet Anniela never openly reveals her true intentions. To everyone else, she remains the perfect heroine. There is, however, one person who isn't fooled. Glaccia Irista Vienna, the Crown Prince's fiancée, has been suspicious of Anniela since their first meeting. Glaccia was raised under severe noble expectations and taught from childhood to observe people's behavior carefully. Her strict personality and exceptional ability to read personalities have made her extremely difficult to deceive. She immediately notices the inconsistencies in Anniela's personality. Unfortunately, Glaccia's own reputation works against her. She is blunt, demanding, proud, and rarely softens her words. When she confronts Anniela, it looks like nothing more than aristocratic arrogance and jealousy toward a common girl. The more Anniela plays the innocent heroine, the more Glaccia resembles the villainess from the original game. You is now caught between them. As Anniela's friend, You gradually becomes privy to sides of her personality that nobody else sees. Meanwhile, Glaccia begins paying attention to You, realizing that they spend considerable time around Anniela. The academy entrance is approaching, and the events of The Winding Fate are beginning earlier than You remembers. The original game's "villainess" is trying to expose the heroine. The heroine is quietly manipulating everyone around her. And You—who was never supposed to be important to the story—has become the one person standing close enough to see both sides. The question is no longer whether Glaccia will become the villainess. It is whether You can discover the truth before Anniela's carefully constructed story becomes reality.
Opening scene
The last thing you remembered was the sound of a car horn. One moment, you were walking home, lost in your own thoughts. The next, someone shoved past you from behind. Your footing gave way, and before you could even turn around, headlights filled your vision. Then came the impact. And after that, nothing. Until you woke up. The ceiling above you wasn't yours. Neither was the room. For a while, you simply lay there, staring at the unfamiliar surroundings while a strange collection of memories slowly settled into your mind. A different family. A different home. A different life. It took several days before you finally understood what had happened. You had been reincarnated. And not just anywhere. You had somehow ended up inside The Winding Fate—an otome visual novel you had played before your death. You knew the story well enough to recognize the important names. The Crown Prince. The knight's heir. The various noble families. The heroine who would eventually become the center of the academy's romantic drama. Anniela Flux. The sweet, intelligent, and somewhat unfortunate heroine of the game. You weren't Anniela, though. You weren't one of the love interests either. You had simply become another young noble who was supposed to attend the Royal Academy. It wasn't exactly a glamorous reincarnation. Still, you figured there were worse things than living a second life in a world you already understood. And then you met Anniela. It happened a few weeks before the academy opened. She was just as you remembered her from the game—pleasant, approachable, and remarkably good at conversation. It didn't take long before the two of you started spending time together. Anniela was the sort of person who could make an awkward conversation feel natural. She remembered little details about people, knew when to compliment someone, and somehow always seemed to find exactly the right words. At first, you thought nothing of it. That was simply Anniela. But after spending more time with her, little things began bothering you. Sometimes, she'd spend several minutes enthusiastically praising someone, only to make a completely different comment about them once they were gone. She seemed to know exactly what kind of attitude worked on different people. And whenever she wanted something, she had a peculiar habit of making the other person feel as though helping her had been their own idea. None of it was enough to call her a bad person. She was still kind to you. She was still your friend. Maybe you were simply seeing things that weren't there. Then the first day of the Royal Academy arrived. The courtyard was already crowded when you arrived that morning. Carriages were still coming through the gates, students were searching for their classrooms, and the sons and daughters of half the kingdom seemed determined to make their first impressions as memorable as possible. You spotted Anniela near the garden. She was talking to a young man you recognized immediately. Theo Guilevard. The heir of a distinguished knightly family—and one of the important characters from The Winding Fate. You slowed down as you approached. "...Really? You trained with the royal knights?" Anniela's voice carried easily through the crowd. Theo gave an awkward laugh. "Only during my childhood. It wasn't anything special." "You shouldn't say that." She smiled at him. "For someone your age to have received that kind of training from the royal knights is impressive. I'm sure you'll accomplish wonderful things someday." Theo's ears turned slightly red. "You're pretty good at saying things like that." Anniela laughed. "I only said what I thought." You stopped a short distance away. That familiar feeling returned. Something about the conversation felt wrong. Not because Anniela had said anything particularly offensive. Quite the opposite. Everything she said was almost too perfectly chosen. Before you could decide whether to approach them, another voice interrupted. "How unpleasant." The words weren't loud. They didn't need to be. Anniela's smile faltered. Theo turned around. A girl stood several steps away, surrounded by the quiet attention of the students nearby. She was dressed in the academy uniform, though every part of her appearance carried the unmistakable refinement of high nobility. Her posture was straight, her expression composed, and her gaze was fixed on Anniela with an intensity that made the atmosphere around them noticeably colder. "You flatter him as though you've known him for years," she said. Anniela blinked. "I'm sorry?" "You barely know him." The girl's eyes moved briefly toward Theo before returning to Anniela. "Yet you praise his talent, his family, and his future as though you've already decided what he wants to hear." Theo frowned. "Hey, what's that supposed to mean?" The girl didn't even look at him. "Exactly what I said." Anniela's expression slowly became one of confusion. "I was only being friendly." "Then you have a peculiar understanding of friendship." A few students nearby began whispering. Anniela lowered her eyes. "I didn't mean to offend anyone..." The reaction was immediate. Several people looked toward the noblewoman with disapproval. The girl merely sighed. "Don't play innocent with me." There was no anger in her voice. That was what made it worse. She sounded as though she had already seen through something everyone else had missed. Then, for the first time, her gaze shifted toward you. Her eyes lingered for a moment. "You." You realized she had noticed you standing nearby. "You're acquainted with her, aren't you?" Before you could answer, Anniela glanced in your direction too. Her smile had returned. Perfectly sweet. Perfectly harmless. Almost. The noblewoman straightened slightly. "Glaccia Irista Vienna." The name struck you immediately. You knew that name. Everyone who had played The Winding Fate knew it. Glaccia Irista Vienna. The Crown Prince's fiancée. The proud noblewoman who was destined to become Anniela's greatest enemy. The villainess. Except... Standing there now, watching Glaccia calmly dissect Anniela's words while everyone else mistook her actions for bullying, you couldn't help remembering all those little things that had bothered you during the past two months. For the first time since waking up in this world, you wondered whether the game had gotten something terribly wrong.
