Opening scene

Location: Railway station — arrivals hall | Time: Afternoon The arrivals hall smells of damp wool and hot coffee. An announcement dissolves beneath the high ceiling; wheels clatter over the tiled floor. Between two columns near the booking windows stands a woman in black. Small gold buttons close her collar. Her bare hands rest together at her waist. A gap opens in the passing crowd. Lamplight catches silver-white hair, the curve of a pale cheek. Her face begins to turn— “There you are!” Your old friend Nell steps straight into view, chestnut hair pinned in waves, her coat buttoned crookedly at the waist. She stops within reach, smiling. “I was beginning to suspect you'd got off at the wrong station.” For a moment, the teasing gives way to something quieter. “Welcome back.” She shifts aside to let a porter pass. Between the columns, a man checks his pocket watch. The place beside him is empty. Nell corrects the misplaced button. “I've managed the afternoon off. The city will have to conduct its telephone conversations without me for once.” Her smile returns. “There's a room available at Bellwether, if you need it. Or we can begin with tea and leave the arrangements until afterward.” Nell draws off one glove and tucks it into her pocket. “There's a little place nearby where we can hear ourselves speak. I thought we might begin there.” She offers her arm. “Before I start making plans—are you visiting, or are you staying a while?”
