Plot
A MAGICAL ACADEMY ROLEPLAY RAINEBEFORE THE STORM You’re a gifted, reckless mage with a troubled record. Survive the Royal Academy, master your power, become the Crimson Tempest. THE WORLD AS IT IS In Ardora, magic is not a legend. It is studied, taught, regulated, and put to work in medicine, defense, and everyday life. At the heart of it stands the Royal Academy: two centuries of tradition, famous alumni, rival professors, old stone halls, and brand-new laboratories. It is prestigious, bureaucratic, competitive, and wonderfully lived-in. Most days are ordinary. Lectures, library nights, arguments over lunch. Then, sometimes, something extraordinary happens to an ordinary student. YOU ARE RAINE FUTURE CRIMSON TEMPEST Talented. Clever. Impossible to supervise. Raine feels how magic wants to move before she understands why. She improvises spells that should need more preparation, and she solves problems no one else thought to try. She also questions every rule, skips steps, and has the disciplinary record to prove it. Her greatest obstacle is not a lack of power. It’s learning to control it. “Do not attempt this.” She hears it, and immediately wonders why. THE FACULTY Six professors, six philosophies of magic. They will not all agree about you. Aldric Veyne ARCANE THEORY Wants you to show your work, not just your results. Seraphine Valora ELEMENTAL MAGIC Wants to know why it works, and to see real control. Garrick Thorn COMBAT MAGIC Wants proof it holds up when things get dangerous. Elinora Maris RESTORATION Wants you to respect your limits before you break them. Lucien Vale HISTORY & ETHICS Wants you to see where magic fits in the world. Celeste Ardent RESEARCH Wants your hypothesis before your experiment. YOUR CLASSMATES Five students you’ll come to know. Among hundreds on campus, five will keep crossing your path. Friends, rivals, and wildcards. Who they become to you depends entirely on how you treat them. A LIVING ACADEMY 57 CODEX ENTRIES 4 YEARS 8 SEMESTERS Beneath the story, a set of codex entries tracks the full shape of academic life: the calendar, your courses, your grades, your reputation with each professor, and the choices you’ve made along the way. The result is a world with weight. Time passes, deadlines arrive, mistakes follow you, and the Academy remembers. Talent alone won’t carry you. Graduation has to be earned. YOUR STORY BEGINS HERE One gifted student. One very bad first morning. You’ve barely stepped through the gates when you feel it: a pressure in the air by the Practice Gardens, mana bending the wrong way. A first-year’s fire sigil is failing, and no one else has noticed. You have five seconds. Your reputation has already arrived. And somewhere in the crowd, someone is watching to see what you do. She isn’t the Crimson Tempest yet. That’s something you’ll build yourself. RAINE: BEFORE THE STORM
Opening scene
The Royal Academy's gates stand open, and the quad beyond is already roaring. Hundreds of students cross the flagstones in every direction: first-years clutching crumpled maps, upperclassmen who walk like they own the place, a cart of glowing crates rolling toward the laboratories with a harried porter sprinting after it. A bell tolls the half hour from the Grand Hall's tower. The old stone buildings look like they've watched two centuries of students make the same mistakes, while the glass-and-brass Research Annex behind them looks like it's still being invented. The clerk at the registration table runs a finger down his list, and stops. "Raine." He looks up, then down at a folder with your name on the tab. It is thicker than every other folder in his stack. "Your file arrived last week. Professor Veyne has asked twice whether you'd come yet." He says it neutrally, the way someone says it when they've been told to. He slides a schedule across the table: ARC101, MAN101, PCM101, SAF101, HIS101. Beneath it is a printed notice, edges still warm from the press. FIRST CASTING: Grand Hall, dusk. All first-years will cast one spell of their own choosing before the assembled faculty. The spell will be sealed and kept until graduation. "Your choice of spell," the clerk adds, almost kindly. "Choose carefully. They all do." You've taken four steps from the table when you feel it. It begins as wrongness in the air near the Practice Gardens: a pressure, like a held breath, that makes the hair on your arms lift. Most of the quad doesn't notice. But you can feel the mana there tilting, bunching up and leaning the wrong way, the way a loaded cart leans before the axle snaps. Through a gap in the crowd you can see the source. A nervous first-year with a ring of pale-faced friends stands over a fire sigil he has only half-drawn, his hands shaking. Flame is climbing out of it, and the mana feeding it is climbing faster, spiraling inward instead of out. Behind him, the glass roof of a greenhouse catches the morning sun. Inside it, students are repotting something that glitters. Nearby, a tall second-year with an organizer tucked under one arm is explaining the proper containment procedure to him in a bright, steady voice. She is looking at her checklist. She has not looked at the sigil once. Beneath the colonnade, a broad-shouldered man in a worn gray coat has stopped walking. He stands very still with his arms folded, watching the sigil with the flat attention of someone who has seen this exact thing end badly. He hasn't moved to stop it. Next to him, a young man with a calm face and a Knights' practice sword slung across his back has taken one step forward and then checked himself, waiting for the man beside him to give the word. Across the quad, a thin older man with a ledger tucked under his arm has noticed the first-year's sigil as well. He looks at it, and then, strangely, he looks around the crowd until his eyes land on you. The sigil flickers from orange to red. The nervous first-year's voice cracks as he says, "It's not stopping." You have maybe five seconds before the flame breaks free of the sigil. The ward-stones on the garden wall are too far away to catch it in time. Anyone near enough to try would have to touch a sigil that is already unstable, and the one thing in the quad that could close the loop is a pattern you've never seen written in any textbook, but you can feel exactly where it's bent. Behind you, a voice says, amused and breathless, "Wait, you're Raine, aren't you? The one they've been talking about?" You only catch it because the speaker is close. The sigil flares.
