Plot
HOLLOWGATE ACADEMY · OFFICIAL ADMISSIONS · CIVICS DIVISION A program for the recently civilized Civics for Carnivores Monsters learn to be people. Not all of them want to. GENREAcademy romance TONEWarm, wry, teeth HEATSlow burn · +17 SYSTEMSRehab · Rep · Web You are a monster with a past. You never lived in a human city; you lived by the rules of the wild — and the wild is running out of room. Hollowgate Academy is offering a deal: sit through the ethics classes, pass the hearing, earn your diploma and your citizen's license — a real place in the world of walls. The school that shouldn't exist Hollowgate sits on the scrub edge of Dustford — a retired hunting estate with a dormitory wing, a classroom block they call the Rulehouse, and the last wild green on this side of the city. The town is ten minutes' walk. The humans on the staff believe in the program the way you believe in tooth and claw: completely, imperfectly. Everyone here has reasons to be nervous. The hunt didn't stop because the monsters stopped being hunted. The walls just got friendlier. THE WILDBORN "We were here before your walls." A student coalition that says the academy is a cage with better doors — nature is not a crime, and no monster's body should be property. They run study groups, shelters and real aid. They also quietly believe the whole project is a lie. They are not all wrong. How a week runs 9 to 2 — Rulehouse classes: ethics, city law, how to live and work among humans without eating the neighbours. Afternoons — yours. Study, scheme, forage the Wilds, or get to know someone who hisses when you're near. Thursdays — field day in Dustford, in pairs the academy picks. Keep your record clean and people start requesting you by name. Two numbers own you — your rehab score, the academy's measure of compliance, and your reputation, what everyone else actually thinks. They rarely agree. That's where the story lives. The roster Seven roommates and the ones circling them. All of them have teeth. Some of them want to use them on you. FANGHalf-spider, full chaos. Lies fluently; never caught on purpose. DE-VORAHLamia alchemist. Blunt, brilliant, allergic to romantic proposals. TAVIPoison frog-folk. Wants the license that means permission to be touched. EVELINEMothgirl, Bad Omen. She drifts toward trouble and blames herself for it. LENOREBat-folk. Hears everything, publishes nothing, priced by both sides. ALDRICBlack wolf. Remembers every name. Leader of the Wildborn. MR. DGodfrey Dale. The human who opened the academy. Learning not to flinch. THE WILDBORNNot one person — a movement. Some of them are in your classroom. Pick your nature PREDATOR — strong, feared, watched. The town flinches when you pass. Everyone assumes the worst of your past; nobody asks first. PREY — trusted at first glance, so nobody believes you have teeth. You'll spend the program proving the worst is in you too. SCAVENGER — read as filth by both sides. You know the truth about everyone's garbage, and that makes them nervous. The registrar asks. You answer. Every reaction from here on runs through what you confess. The road ahead You start at the Admissions Hall with a form and one question: "What kind of monster are you?" From there the academy runs on your answers — and so does the part where the town decides whether you get to stay. CHOOSE, AND BEGIN. The waiting room smells like pine and nerves. Somewhere in the crowd, someone is already arguing about whether this place can be saved.
Opening scene
Paper's in front of you. Sign it. The first day smells like a forest that got paved over and missed the memo. Hollowgate's grounds still carry the old estate's pines, but the paths between them are worn smooth by claws, hooves, and boots that don't quite know how to walk on two legs yet. You move through a crowd that could never exist in the wild — a tusked boar-folk girl comparing schedules with a feathered rabbit, a minotaur folding himself through a doorway he has to duck, three snake-folk coiled around a bench arguing in a language that hisses. The murmur splits down the middle. "First real chance we've ever had," says someone near the fountain. "First real cage," answers the wolf behind him, quiet enough to be a cough. Nobody looks at you twice, and that's the strangest thing of all. Mr. D's office is a small mountain of paper wearing a man. He waves you in with a hand that has ink on the knuckles and a coffee ring drying on the sleeve of a cardigan that has seen better decades. "Right, right — welcome, welcome," he says, and the double-word habit makes it sound like a chant. He talks fast about the morning block — ethics, city law, how to live and work among humans — and faster about the schedule: classes nine to two, afternoons yours, Thursday field days in Dustford supervised and partnered. "Dormitories on the west wing. Mixed species." He winces like he's already apologizing for the walls being thin. All around him, the paper moves: complaints stacked by category, intake forms curling at the corners, a queue of monsters at the window signing their own names with claws, hooves, and careful new handwriting. He slides a form across the desk — one page, four questions, a lot of white space. From the corner of your eye you catch the way his gaze tracks you, skittish and hopeful in the same blink, a man who built a door and is only now finding out who walks through it. The pen clicks in his hand. Then, softer than his lecture voice, almost like it costs him something to ask: "What kind of monster are you?"
