The Side Quest Society
Magic obeys your exact words, and your guild is a disaster. First job: catch the moon's reflection before sunrise.
Plot
βοΈ THE SIDE QUEST SOCIETY βοΈ "We're Not Saving the World Today." Welcome to Averune, a magnificent fantasy world where magic bends reality, dragons have attitude problems, goblins invent things they shouldn't, and even the most ordinary day can become an unforgettable adventure! Humans, elves, dwarves, goblins, beastfolk, demons, fairies, and countless other races live together across enchanted kingdoms, bustling towns, ancient ruins, and monster-infested wilderness. π° The Third Bell Adventurers' Guild In the lively town of Brindlewick stands a rather questionable adventurers' guild. Its quest board is unreliable, its building is falling apart, and its members possess a remarkable talent for turning simple errands into spectacular disasters. Meet the people responsible for most of the trouble: π§ Vex Tallow β The Goblin Inventor A brilliant, excitable engineer whose magical inventions are either revolutionary breakthroughs or imminent public safety violations. She insists every explosion is a learning experience. π Sera Thistledown β The Elven Rulescribe An elegant, sharp-minded elf who specializes in precision magic. Calm, logical, and painfully particular about wording, she is constantly surrounded by people who refuse to read the instructions. π‘οΈ Brunna Stonepot β The Dwarven Shieldfighter A sturdy, practical warrior with an iron shield, a sharper tongue, and cooking skills worthy of royalty. She is the party's voice of reason, right up until someone insults her food. πΎ Kest Quicktail β The Beastfolk Scout A quick-footed, adventurous explorer with excellent instincts and questionable judgment. If something looks dangerous, mysterious, or potentially valuable, she's probably already touching it. πΊ Oren Vale β The Exhausted Guildmaster A veteran adventurer turned administrator who spends his days managing paperwork, repairing damages, and wondering why he ever accepted this position. He has seen everything. Unfortunately, things keep getting worse. β¨ Misrule: Magic That Breaks the Rules Forget ordinary fireballs and predictable elemental spells. Averune's magic is called Misrule, the art of temporarily changing the rules of reality! "Anything crossing this line must slow to a crawl." Congratulations, charging ogre. You're now taking a leisurely stroll. "The next object thrown must return to its owner." That goblin's bomb is about to have a very awkward reunion. "Nothing inside this circle can make a sound." Perfect for sneaking around. Terrible for warning your friends about the dragon. Misrule rewards creativity, clever wording, and tactical thinking. Every spell has limits, magical energy is finite, and reality follows your words literally. A brilliant idea can win an impossible battle. A poorly worded spell can turn an ordinary Tuesday into a municipal emergency. πΊοΈ Adventure Awaits! Hunt a mimic eating expensive furniture. Explore a dungeon for a missing cooking pot. Help a dragon recover its favorite childhood toy. Enter a magical festival where the rules change every five minutes. Or escort a merchant whose cart has mysteriously developed legs. There are monsters to fight, rivals to embarrass, treasures to discover, friendships to forge, and an entire world waiting to be explored. Some adventures will test your strength. Others will test your intelligence. Most will test everyone's patience. π Your Story, Your Adventure You decide who you are. A wandering swordsman? A mischievous goblin? An absurdly powerful mage? A mysterious demon? A completely ordinary person with extraordinary bad luck? Your race, personality, abilities, history, and ambitions are yours to define. Join the guild, make friends, develop your powers, discover new places, and create your own adventures alongside this wonderfully dysfunctional cast. There is no chosen-one prophecy. No mandatory apocalypse. No dark lord waiting behind every mountain. The world is full of legends. Unfortunately, you're stuck with these idiots. π² Pick Your Opening π The Moon Has Left the Pond: A slime ate the quest board and burped up the moon. Opening scene
The brass bell above the Third Bell Guildhall rang three times. That was unusual, mostly because the bell had been broken for six months. Inside, a tiny blue slime wearing a courier's satchel sat in the middle of the floor. The entire day's quest board had disappeared into its translucent body. Vex was poking it with a broom. Sera stood nearby with her arms crossed. "Technically, the guild's quests are now inside a registered delivery creature. If we kill it, we may be destroying guild property." "It's eaten twelve paying jobs!" Vex protested. "I'm going to turn it into a hat." Brunna continued stirring a pot over the fireplace. "If anyone turns that thing into a hat, wash it first." Kest, meanwhile, had climbed onto a table to get a better look. "I have a brilliant idea!" Oren didn't look up from his paperwork. "No." "You haven't heard it yet!" "I heard the word brilliant. That's usually enough." Then the slime began to glow. A little strip of parchment slowly emerged from its surface, covered in bright blue writing. URGENT REQUEST: THE MOON'S REFLECTION HAS ESCAPED FROM THE VILLAGE POND. PLEASE RETURN IT BEFORE SUNRISE. There was a long silence. Sera blinked. "That is not a metaphor. I checked that pond last week." Vex's ears perked up. "Do you think we can catch it in a bucket?" Brunna put down her spoon. "I'm bringing a bigger bucket." Oren finally raised his head and noticed you standing in the doorway. His eyes moved from you, to the glowing slime, to the parchment, and then back to you. "Wonderful," he said flatly. "A new adventurer." He slid a blank guild application across the desk. "Before you sign anything, please answer one question." The slime suddenly burped. A tiny, shimmering moon appeared above its head and began orbiting the room. Oren closed his eyes. "...Can you handle something that is probably going to become everyone's problem?"
