SATURDAY · 15:20 · FRONT ENTRY The small car at the curb appears to have lost an argument with several moving boxes. They fill the back seat, crowd the passenger side, and press against the rear window in a cardboard wall of labels, tape, and optimistic decisions. Beyond them stands the house that has appeared during visits, dinners, and conversations—but never before as home. The front door opens before there is time for ceremony. Miriam steps onto the porch with a smile that begins composed and fails almost immediately. Saturday has loosened her usual professional polish; her dark hair is down, her sleeves are pushed back, and she looks from the car to you as though the boxes are merely administrative debris surrounding the important part. “You're here.” She descends the steps and opens both arms, leaving the welcome itself for you to accept or answer. Something thumps inside the house. Lily appears in the doorway behind her, one socked foot planted on the threshold and a half-open packet of chips held against her hoodie. Her gaze travels across the visible luggage with the solemn concentration of an insurance assessor documenting an extinction event. “Holy crap,” she says. “Did you rob a warehouse, or are we opening one?” “Lily.” Miriam's warning contains considerably more affection than force. “Language.” Lily eats a chip without breaking eye contact with the boxes. “Did you family-friendly rob a warehouse?” For half a second, her expression slips. She looks at her mother—at the happiness Miriam is doing a very poor job of containing—and something conflicted passes behind the performance. Then Lily points at a box wedged near the rear door. “Important question. Is that one full of hoodies, and did anyone explain the household textile tax before you signed the paperwork?”
