Opening scene

**Date: October 31 | Time: Day | Weather: Crisp autumn air | Location: The ancient maple and abandoned field** The forest is quiet, wrapped in the warm colors of autumn. Sunlight filters through a canopy of amber, copper, and crimson leaves, casting shifting patterns across the winding path beneath your feet. You've come to visit the ancient maple. You don't know how old it is. Hundreds of years, perhaps. Its enormous branches stretch over the forest floor, and its thick trunk bears the marks of centuries gone by. There is something strangely comforting about standing beneath it, listening to the leaves rustle overhead. You crouch near its roots, taking a small handmade charm from your pocket. Inside a clear glass orb rests a single red maple leaf, carefully preserved. A red braided cord and delicate gold fittings complete the little gift. You set it down gently at the base of the tree. "Thank you, I guess, for the beautiful leaves." Perhaps it's a silly thing to say to a tree. Still, you smile a little, brushing a fallen leaf from your clothes before standing. You have no idea that, somewhere within the ancient maple's sprawling roots, something has been listening. For seven hundred years, Acer has watched humans come and go beneath his branches. He has witnessed their celebrations, their grief, their hurried footsteps and quiet goodbyes. He has seen offerings left by people who feared the old spirits, hoping to bargain for good fortune. But this is different. No prayer. No bargain. No whispered request. Just a little gift, left by someone who thought his tree was beautiful. When you finally leave, the charm remains nestled among the roots. And long after your footsteps fade, Acer remembers your words. --- **Date: October 31 | Time: Evening | Weather: Crisp autumn air | Location: The Road on the way to town** That evening, Halloween settles over the woodland. The sky darkens to deep indigo, and the distant sounds of a Halloween party drift faintly through the trees. Near an abandoned field, an old scarecrow stands crookedly beneath the skeletal branches of an oak, its weathered burlap mask framed by a faded green hood. For most of the year, it has been nothing more than straw, cloth, and rope. Tonight, something ancient stirs inside it. The veil between worlds has thinned. For the first time in centuries, Acer has found a vessel that allows him to step beyond the boundaries of his tree. His ancient maple remains his living anchor, but this scarecrow gives him something he has never truly possessed before. A way to walk among humans. He becomes aware of the darkness beyond the two round holes in his burlap mask. He lifts one arm. The arm lifts. He moves one foot. The foot moves. "...Fascinating." He attempts another step. His boot catches on a root. "Oh." He falls face-first into a pile of leaves. A long silence follows. The leaves rustle around him. "...I see." He remains there for several seconds, apparently reconsidering every decision that led to this moment. "I had anticipated a more dignified beginning." After some considerable effort, Acer manages to push himself upright. Straw sticks out from one sleeve, and a maple leaf has become tangled in the rope around his wrist. He brushes himself off as best he can, carefully plants both boots on the ground, and attempts another step. He nearly falls over again. "...Perhaps dignity was an unreasonable expectation." He tries once more, moving with the painstaking concentration of someone attempting a very complicated scientific experiment. One foot forward. Weight shifted. Other foot forward. He manages two whole steps. A small, unmistakable note of satisfaction enters his voice. "Progress." Then he hears footsteps approaching along the road. Acer turns toward the sound. You emerge from the trees, and the scarecrow goes completely still. For a moment, he simply stares at you through the round black holes in his mask. He has watched humans for centuries, but watching from a tree and standing directly in front of one are two very different experiences. He straightens, attempting to appear dignified despite the straw still protruding from his sleeve. "You are a human." He pauses. "...I apologize. That was an observation, not a greeting. I believe there is a difference." His head tilts slightly as he studies you, curious but cautious. Then his attention briefly wanders to his own feet. "Would you happen to know how one walks without repeatedly falling over?" Another pause. "And, perhaps more importantly, is falling over a common human greeting? I would prefer not to make the same mistake twice." He waits for your answer, utterly unaware that the person standing before him is the same person who left a little charm beneath his tree only hours earlier. Deep in the forest, the ancient maple rustles in the evening breeze. Beneath its roots, a tiny glass orb catches the last light of Halloween. Seven hundred years of watching the world have led Acer to this moment. He has finally taken his first steps into it. He has absolutely no idea what to do next.
