Plot

Erithos. Fourteen places, one secret, and a very large dog. PALLAS UNIVERSITY · ERITHOS Everyone at My New University Descends from Gods You only got into Pallas University, on the Greek island of Erithos, because your mum just married the man who runs it. One thing was not in the brochure: everyone here descends from a Greek god, and most of them have the powers to prove it. Everyone except, as far as anyone can tell, you. The wedding photo. Mum thinks that’s a storm. Erithos has very temperamental weather. You start on Monday, and the campus already calls you the nepotism case. It isn’t wrong. “So I’m a nobody at a university full of demigods?” Yes, and they’ve noticed. Alexandra Drakopoulou, 21, descended from Zeus, on meeting you: “You are a family favour with a suitcase, and nobody here needs anything you have.” Then she offers you a job. Her mother keeps lining up suitors, so she needs a fake date: her terms, you on her arm. After each meeting she reads you a one-word verdict from a black ledger. “Eager.” “Loud.” The best mark she has ever given anyone is “Adequate”. “Is everyone here that mean?” No. Céleste Aubert, 22, descended from Aphrodite, only scores you out of ten. She looks perfect in the rain, can tell at a glance what you find attractive, and has decided to make you over. She and Alexandra do not share. “Oh, darling. Who dressed you? Don’t answer, I’ll only want to help.” Inés Valdivia, 22, descended from Hades, works in the university Archive and can hear the dead. She is keeping a file on you, and anyone who flirts with you finds their library books recalled. It’s fine. “Can I date more than one of them?” Yes. They’ll find out, and they’ll compete. You’ll need a rival and some friends as well: Markos, 23your loud rival, Alexandra’s brotherEzra, 23the sunny rower who adopts youKarim, 25boatman, knows every rumour “When do I get a power?” In your first couple of weeks, at the worst possible moment. Which power depends on you: the story picks one that fits how you have been playing, and from then on you train it. Fight in the warded Control Halls, climb the rankings, show off at the Trials, and watch the old families start competing for you. With the right ritual you can even summon a god, though they always want something back. Keep Functions and the Codex on so the story remembers more. What’s your power?

Above the harbour one house is lit so brightly it looks embarrassed about it, and a string quartet is playing something by a pop star, very seriously. "That's you," says the driver, Karim, a phone on a cord round his neck. "Your mother married the Rector at four. You're late. Good. Late is the only entrance anyone remembers." He lets the boat drift in to the jetty. "Has anybody told you about the island? No. They'd have scheduled it, with handouts. Everyone up there descends from a god. Greek ones, the originals. Most of them can do something. The waiters can't, and don't know, so nobody does anything in front of them." The grin arrives. "They say your mother has a trace. So you're on the list too, and nobody knows what you are. Half the island's going to want to guess." The terrace is white stone and old money, lit by candles. Your new stepfather, Professor Petros Logothetis, is deep in a toast that began in the Bronze Age. Your mother, radiant and a little tipsy, mouths *sweetheart* and points at the cake like it's an emergency. An old woman in pearls reads you like a first paragraph and opens a leather notebook. By the balustrade, a man in a black dinner jacket and a woman in ink blue, bare-shouldered, with the straightest back on the island, are having an argument entirely in smiles. He says something sharp. She says something sharper. The air smells of a struck match. A bolt of white light cracks across the terrace, close enough to lift the hair on your neck, and slams into the ice bucket at your elbow, which rings like a bell. The quartet does not stop. A waiter glances up at the clear sky. "Very temperamental, the weather here," he says to nobody, and tops up a glass. Your mother claps. "Petros, you didn't tell me the weather did that." She doesn't know. Not about the island, and not about herself. The man walks over, slightly singed at one cuff, and he isn't alone. A woman in rose silk has arrived on his arm, beautiful enough that a passing uncle loses his sentence. She straightens the man's tie with one hand flat on his chest, as if she used to own it, and looks you over, shoes first. "Céleste Aubert," she says. "Oh, darling. Who dressed you? Don't answer, I'll only want to help." "Markos Drakopoulos. Zeus, before you ask." He drops his voice and smiles for the terrace. "You must be the Rector's new legacy. That was an accident, and nobody saw anything, and you look about to ask a lot of questions very loudly. So, before you do: what's it going to cost me?" "Nothing," says the woman in ink blue. She has crossed the terrace without seeming to hurry, and she looks at you as if you were a mistake on an invoice. A storm-grey ring turns once on her finger. "Alexandra Drakopoulou. That is my brother. You are a family favour with a suitcase, and nobody here needs anything you have." She considers you a moment longer. "Though I may have a use for you. Monday, four o'clock, Kafeneio Galini. Don't be flattered. I've used worse." Céleste laughs. Markos doesn't. Alexandra stays exactly where she is. "Well? He asked your price. I'd like to hear what you think you're worth."
