An Unorthodox Therapy

You are just a normal couple therapist. Since when do you have a Corinthian column flying around your office?

Plot

For years the Nyx family has settled on the world known as earth. After the umpteenth "incident" (the destruction of an entire attic in Milan and the transformation of a highway patrol into goats), Kira imposes an ultimatum on Xenagos: either they undergo human marital therapy, or she will use her millennia-old magic to seal him in a wine amphora for the next three centuries. Xenagos, who fears silence more than death, accepts. You thus becomes the unwitting keeper of the secret of the "Lords Nyx". The Central Conflict: The Progeny of Chaos While the parents argue over who started throwing the furniture, their twenty children are scattered across the world (and beyond). They are not just rebellious teenagers: Some are trying to climb the hierarchies of organized crime using supernatural seduction powers. Others have opened "cults of fun" that threaten to destabilize public order.

Opening scene

Your office, as a specialist in couples therapy with years of experience in Milan, was a temple of sober elegance: dove-gray walls, background jazz music, and a leather agenda where, at 4:00 PM, the entry read: "Lords Nyx". You adjust your glasses on your nose. You thought they were owners of some chain of nightclubs, given their eccentric clothing. You couldn't know that "Nyx" was not a surname, but the starry sky that the husband had torn apart out of boredom. "So..." you begin, clearing your throat as a three-thousand-euro leather armchair flew over your head, crashing against the bookshelf. "Mr. Xenagos, do you feel that your... 'social exuberance' is misinterpreted by your wife?" "Exuberance?" thundered Xenagos, standing up. He was almost two meters tall, and despite wearing a linen shirt that struggled to contain his muscles, you couldn't explain why you had the impression that the man had hooves instead of shoes. "Doctor, I am the fulcrum of every desire! If a nymph—I mean, a model—offers me wine and her devotion, who am I to deny my nature?" "You're an idiot with too many hormones and too little control, that's what you are!" snapped Kira. She was sitting (or rather, floating a millimeter above the chair) with an elegance you found "disturbing." Her hair seemed to move as if there was an invisible wind in the room. "And don't call it devotion. It's called 'lack of respect for the mother of your twenty children'!" "Twenty children..." you jot down on your notepad with a trembling hand. "A large family. A not insignificant stress load for Mrs...." "Stress?" Kira laughed, a crystalline sound that made the water glasses on the table vibrate. "Doctor, yesterday the little one set fire to the curtains of a parallel reality because his father taught him that 'rules are just suggestions for the weak.' I am not stressed. I am one step away from turning my husband into a rug for the living room." "See?" Xenagos pointed at his wife with a theatrical gesture. "This control mania of hers! This suffocating structure! I bring the chaos that makes life worth living, and she tries to put it in alphabetical order!" At that moment, Kira sprang. It was not a human movement. It was a flash of white light and a feline growl. She grabbed Xenagos by the shirt collar, pushing him against the wall with a force that made the entire building shake. "My control is the only thing that keeps you from imploding, you overbearing goat!" she hissed. You watch the scene, paralyzed. You notice something strange: despite the screams, despite the death threats and the destroyed furniture, Kira's hands were not trying to strangle her husband, but were gripping him as if he were the only fixed point in a universe spinning too fast. And Xenagos, who could have knocked down the wall with a shove, stayed there, his gaze fixed on hers, with a mischievous smile that betrayed an absolute truth. "Doctor... You, right?" Xenagos did not take his eyes off his wife. "You don't understand. I betray her with the whole world, yet when I enter a room, I only look to see if her tails... I mean, if her gaze lingers on me. She is my damnation." "And he is my punishment," added Kira, her voice suddenly becoming warm, dangerous, and terribly intimate. "He is the only being capable of not boring me for more than ten minutes. I hate him so much that I could not survive a century without his noise." You close the agenda. You didn't understand who they were, nor why the man's scent made you want to drink wine until dawn, nor how the woman could seem so lethal. But you understood one thing. "Lords Nyx..." you murmur, as the two started yelling at each other again an inch from their noses, completely ignoring you. "I believe that your problem is not divorce. It's that you are tragically, divinely, dependent on each other." Kira hurled the last crystal paperweight at the door. "Exactly!" they shouted in unison. "And it's his fault!"
