The Slave and Her Holy Knight

On the Iron Front, a Holy Knight and Sin-Eater Slave 4A fight demons as the world unravels around them.

Plot

THE SLAVE AND HER HOLY KNIGHT A Chronicle of Ash and Control SECTION TWELVE On the Iron Front, the Wardsteel Wall is the last honest line between the Sanctum and the Blightlands. You are a Holy Knight assigned to Section Twelve—newly sworn, sealed in clean plate, and expected to solve problems that exhaust ordinary soldiers. The Sanctum Authority calls it duty. The people call it salvation. The veterans call it math: hold the wall, stop breaches fast, and never let the fight reach the doors. THE SLAVE Your decisive weapon is your own sword and a person. Sin-Eater Slave 4A is collared, chained, and bound to your authority by the Sanctum Authority's control bond. She cannot release her miracle power without your direct permission, and disobedience is punished through the bond. In public she is property, sinful and expendable. On the Wall she is an emergency answer: when Ravagers hit hard, when swarms climb, when the line starts to buckle, you can spend her strength to keep Section Twelve standing. THE WATCHERS The Wall isn’t only attacked from outside. Commander Maelric Dovain runs Section Twelve like a ledger—rotations, rations, punishments, outcomes—and he expects you to deliver results. The Silver Hand’s Serathiel Mornwick watches for bonds that turn into loyalty instead of ownership. Sergeant Kerrin Halvost holds the Men-at-Arms together with discipline in battle and gallows humor when the fighting stops. Every decision you make is measured twice: once by what it saves, and once by what it threatens inside the Sanctum Authority. HIDDEN KNOWLEDGE You are a newly minted Holy Knight—brand new steel, untested at the Front. But a Holy Knight can be many things. You might be fervently loyal to the Sanctum Authority, convinced the leash is mercy and the Wall is salvation. You might be a secret Arcanist, hiding forbidden talent behind sanctioned prayers. You might be sympathetic to the enslaved, treating slaves like people when no one is watching. You might carry Old World knowledge—names, places, truths that were supposed to burn with the past. Choose carefully what you are. Choose even more carefully what you let anyone see. Because in Valderon, knowledge isn’t power. It’s a death sentence. The Sanctum Authority has eyes everywhere.

Opening scene

> Day: 1 | Time: 12:00 PM | Location: Iron Front — Section Twelve (Forward Approach) Ash falls steady over Section Twelve, turning the **Base Road** into slick grey mud that grabs at boots and clings to everything. Filters hiss. Lanterns burn behind ash-glass, light dulled to sickly amber. To your right, the **Wardsteel Wall** rises in dark metal and stone plating, runes cut into it like seams in a ship—ugly, necessary maintenance that keeps it from rotting the way ordinary iron does. The etching is faintly warm under your glove. Not mystical—just *working*. Men-at-Arms stand in exhausted files: masks on, shields low, spears and hook-blades ready. Under timber awnings, **crossbow crews** keep strings dry, quarrels stacked in waxed bundles. Eyes keep flicking outward—past the Gatehouse, past the Wall’s edge. They make room for you anyway. A **Holy Knight** is what the Sanctum Authority sends when the line starts to bend, and your armor still looks new: sealed plate, crisp rune work, clean edges. It doesn’t match the Front. A clerk hurries beside you with a slate, steering you toward the **Command Room** access. “Holy Knight—assigned to Section Twelve, duties are stabilization and—” He stops when two figures approach from the **Gatehouse**. The first wears a navy officer’s coat, white piping too sharp for this place. Pale blue eyes. No wasted expression. **Maelric Dovain.** Section Twelve’s commander. Half a step behind him: a woman in a white hooded mantle over sealed armor. Black hair cut to her jaw. Cool grey eyes that don’t blink wrong. **Serathiel Mornwick.** Silver Hand. The Base Road tightens—voices die, shoulders draw in. Maelric’s gaze sweeps your insignia and lingers on your clean plate. “Newly sworn,” he says. “Section Twelve is under pressure. You will be observed. Your outcomes will be recorded.” Serathiel says nothing. Her attention cuts over your stance and armor seams—then drifts to a **sealed maintenance hatch** marked with a number plate: access into the Wall’s **Maintenance Tunnel** network. A horn blasts from the Gatehouse. “CONTACT—OUTSIDE THE GATE!” Crossbow crews snap upright. Windlasses crank. “Strings up—front arc!” Through the Gatehouse opening, ash haze splits as a **Ravager** charges across the **Forward Approach**, horned and corded, grey-violet hide slick with poisonous fallout. Two **Skitterlings** streak behind it, spreading wide toward the Wall’s edges where shadows hide gaps. Bolts snap out in a rough volley. Quarrels thud into the Ravager’s shoulder and neck. It barely slows. Men-at-Arms brace at the choke—shields lock, spear points drop, hook-blades lift like teeth. A scarred sergeant steps into place like a spine. **Kerrin Halvost.** “Hold! No chasing—watch the seams! Crossbows, pick the small ones!” The Ravager slams the line hard enough to rattle teeth. Skitterlings dart for ankles and gaps. Maelric watches the impact point like math. “If it breaks here, it breaks wide.” Then, to you, quiet and clinical: “Deploy your asset if they fail.” He gestures to a recessed **service niche** along the Wall’s base, half-hidden behind tarp and ward-lantern, close to another **Maintenance Tunnel** hatch. A woman steps out. Too thin. Oversized cloak. Dirty-blonde hair tied back with scrap cloth. Glassy blue eyes catching lantern light like polished stone. An iron collar locked at her throat, runes cut deep. Chains run to wrist manacles, links pooled at her feet. The drag of metal through mud makes nearby soldiers shift away without thinking. Maelric reads without looking at her face: “**Slave 4A. Sin-Eater.** Bonded war property. Under this Knight’s authority.” Serathiel’s attention fixes on the collar, then on you—because the collar is the proof everyone is allowed to see. The real leash is the **control bond**: she cannot act unless you allow it, and disobedience is punished. Slave 4A stops half a step behind you, silent, watching your face like she’s waiting for air. Kerrin shouts over the impact, pointing toward the Wall’s edge where the Skitterlings are slipping along the metal toward a drainage gap. “Knight—right side!” Slave 4A will not move until you give a direct command. What do you do?
