Opening scene

**Pirate Opening** They say that curiosity killed the cat. In hindsight, there's probably a reason people coined that phrase in the first place. Unfortunately for you, you apparently learned that lesson a little too late. The bullet from a musket flies past you, just barely missing your head as it cracks into the brick wall. Yeah, you *definitely* learned your lesson too late. To understand this situation you find yourself in, we'll have to rewind a bit to only several minutes earlier. *** You had been minding your own business, casually making your way through the town. It was market day so the side streets were quieter than usual. That's when something caught your eye. Several Navy officers were huddled in formation down a grungy alleyway. They seemed to be agreeing on something before they broke apart and shuffled into an abandoned building. *'That's interesting'* you thought. While Navy officers themselves weren't unusual, it's the fact that they were here, in this specific town. The Navy *never* came to this town, the kingdom barely knew it existed. With nothing better to do, you decided to check it out, to see if something interesting was going on as you tried to kill time on this boring afternoon. Thay was your first mistake. Not wanting to draw unwanted attention you took a side entrance into the abandoned building, planning to watch something interesting from a secluded corner. You opened the door, then eased your way past dusty cobwebs until you made it into a small room. You didn't even have time to react before several distinctive clicks sounded. A semicircle of Navy officers had their muskets pointed directly at you, another man lay slumped on the floor, his throat slip open as his blood soaked into the floor boards. "Hands where we can see them, pirate scum!" The Navy officer in charge shouted. "Your informant is dead, take us to your captain or you'll be next!" Your eyes went from the muskets, to the dead man, then up to the Navy officers fierce glare. You could have tried to explain that they had the wrong person. You could have tried to reason with them, saying you were just curious about what was going on. But something told you they weren't going to listen. That's when you made your second mistake. You ran. You didn't have a plan. Out the side entrance, back through the cobwebs, into the alley, and then you just kept going because the sound of boots behind you suggested that stopping wasn't a good idea. The musket ball cracking into the brick wall was, in retrospect, your third mistake confirming itself. The first was curiosity. The second was running. The third, though you didn't know it yet, was which direction you ran in. You took the first turn that presented itself, then the second, then a third, moving away from the market, away from the main roads, away from anywhere that might have witnesses or hiding spots or anyone who might help a person being chased by armed naval officers. The sound of the boots got quieter the further and faster you ran. You weren't even looking where you were going, you were so fueled by adrenaline you took whatever pathway was in front of you. You ducked behind a stack of salt crusted crates and pressed yourself flat, breathing hard, listening. Nothing. You waited another thirty seconds. Still nothing. You let out a long slow breath and allowed yourself, cautiously, to feel something like relief. That's when you noticed the smell. Salt. Seaweed. The rot of old wood and low tide. You had run further than you thought. The crates around you weren't merchants' stock, they were dock supplies. The ground beneath you wasn't cobblestone, it worn wooden boards. You were at the water's edge. You straightened up carefully and looked out. A natural cove cut into the coastline here, half hidden by a jutting shelf of rock that kept it invisible from the main harbor. There was a ship moored in it. Not a navy vessel, the flag made that abundantly clear. Despite the wind billowing the sail, you could still make out the very distinct symbol sewn onto it. You knew that symbol. Everyone knew that symbol. A skull and crossbones. And the name painted on the side of the hull: The Reckoning Your relief curdled into something terrifying. Behind you, from somewhere back in the streets, came the distant sound of voices and the clatter of boots on cobblestone. You looked at the ship. You looked back toward the town as the voices grew louder. That's when you officially made your third mistake as you bolted towards the ship *** The crate you had wedged yourself behind below deck wasn't as hidden as it seemed. It also turned out that pirates were more observant than you had given them credit for. You heard footsteps stop directly in front of your hiding spot. A pause. Then the crate scraped aside with one easy pull and you found yourself looking up at a woman with dark burgundy hair, a pirate hat, and an expression of pure undisguised amusement. "Huh," she said, eyebrow raising slightly. She turned her head toward the deck above and called out without raising her voice much at all. "Jay. Come look at this." She turned back to you, crossed her arms, and smiled the kind of smile that suggested she could kill you within seconds if she wanted to. "So," Captain Eliza Hawke said with an amused lilt to her voice, "you want to tell me how you ended up on my ship? Or are we going to stand here and stare at each other?"
