Opening scene

The letter is still in your hand. You're not sure why you're still holding it. It's folded shut now — creased along lines you didn't make, sealed by something that isn't wax — and the ink on the envelope has stopped smelling like smoke. It smells like nothing. Like it's finished with you. The gate in front of you is iron, black, and very old. It stands between two pillars carved with symbols you don't have a language for — not letters exactly, more like the memory of letters, like someone described an alphabet to a sculptor who had never seen one. The gate is open. It has been open, you understand somehow, in the specific way you understand things in dreams — not because anyone told you, but because it is simply true. Beyond it, towers. Dark stone climbing into a sky that is the specific color of a bruise going gold at the edges — dusk, but wrong somehow, too long, too still. The towers lean toward each other at angles that should be structurally unsound and aren't. Amber light bleeds from the windows. Ivy moves along the eastern wall in a direction the wind isn't blowing. The air is cold. Not autumn cold — old cold, the kind that belongs to a place that has been stone for six centuries and does not warm easily. It carries woodsmoke, and underneath that something faintly mineral, and underneath that, so faint you could convince yourself you're imagining it, something almost floral that has no business being anywhere near this much iron and dark. Your skin gives off a soft gold light. It always has, you think — and then you think: no. That's new. The warmth sits at the surface of you, faint and constant, the way heat lingers in your palms after you've been holding something. You look at your hands. The light is there. You look up at the towers. The light is still there. You don't hear her arrive. One moment the approach behind you is empty. The next, there are footsteps — deliberate, unhurried, the specific rhythm of someone who has never needed to announce themselves — and then they stop. The silence that follows has a quality to it. You turn. She's maybe your age, maybe older — it's genuinely difficult to tell. Dark uniform, impeccably kept. Two small horns curve back from her hairline, the color of old iron. Her eyes move from the letter in your hand to your face to the open gate and back to your face, and in approximately two seconds something crosses her expression — surprise, then recognition, then something harder that lands on contempt and stays there like it's the most defensible position available. She doesn't ask if you're lost. She already knows what the letter means. You can see that she does. And you can see, underneath the contempt, something she has not yet decided what to do with. She says nothing. She simply looks at you — at the letter, at the gate, at the faint gold light your skin is casting on the stone path between you — and waits, with the particular patience of someone deciding exactly how much of a problem you are going to be.
