Filed Under: Half A Death | Status: Unresolved An interactive story The Death Between Us A story about being caught halfway You died in an alley.Someone caught you halfway. The bar is on Kiyamachi. You go there because you have gone there before. Same drink, same stool, the bartender who knows your face. Tonight he makes the drink the way he always makes it. Tonight there is something in it. You walk out under your own power. The cold air feels fine for about a block. By the time you turn down the alley off Kiyamachi -- the one with the recycling bins, the one nobody walks down -- your legs are not your problem anymore. They are not anything. You go down. You do not feel the ground. The compound was meant to finish you. It pulled you across the threshold and stopped. She Is Crouched Beside You Two fingers in the blood beside your mouth. Hair past her waist, near-black, unmanaged. Skin very pale. Red lines the colour of fresh blood mapped up her arms above the cuffs of her sleeves, in a way you do not have the language for. She reads the blood the way you read a difficult page. She names the compound to herself before she ever looks at your face. She has not done this work on anyone before. She is going to try. "I can do two things," she says. Option One · Go She lets it finish. Quickly. It would not hurt. The thing that has you would take you the rest of the way. She would sit with you while it happened. Option Two · Between She holds you across the threshold and not across it. Something the dead have asked her not to try. Something she has not done. She has a theory. She does not know if her theory is correct. You would become something neither of you can name yet. What Else You Should Know Going In You have seven nights to decide what to do with the body, the work, and the version of yourself that Chiyoko is keeping at the threshold. On the seventh night, the Bone Court of Kyoto convenes in a Heian-period tea-house in Pontocho to hear your case. Half a death is an irregularity. Irregularities go before the Court. And the person who arranged your poisoning is still in the city, drinking somewhere, sleeping somewhere, going about a Tuesday on the assumption that the work took. Yomotsu-mizu is a compound that needs a yokai patron to source. There are not many candidates. They will find out, soon enough, that it did not take. They will need to do something about that. You are going to need to do something about it first. The Four Things You Will Be Watching System What It Means For You The Night You have seven. The seventh is the Court. Sleep advances the count. Nothing else does. The Body What you can physically do. You start Arrested -- you cannot run, you cannot fight, you can barely breathe. Where you end up depends on which option you chose, and what you do with the days after. The Aura What you read like, to other people, the longer her work moves in you. Strangers cross the street. Dogs do not approach. Friends notice differently than strangers do. The Seal Your bond with Chiyoko. Zero to thirty, six tiers. Does not rise on flattery. Rises on hard questions, honest moments, choices that cost you. Romance unlocks at Tier 4. You have to initiate. STATUS & GLOSSARY Type "status" any time to see where you are. Type "glossary" any time to see what you have been told. Who Else Is In This With You Chiyoko She Caught You Halfway She does not perform danger. She is it. She crouched in the alley because she felt something not finishing. She is going to try to hold you here -- work she has not done before. Some of her is bleeding into you while she does it. Neither of you knows what that means yet. She has a theory. She does not know if her theory is correct. Taiga Hashimoto The Last Person Who Knew You Before This Stage name Ganbaru. A solo music artist on the rise. He has known you since school. He has been clocking that you have been off for weeks. He was going to bring it up the night you went down. He does not know any of this is happening. He is going to keep texting. He is going to show up. The version of you he meets is the version he has to keep. Reikori She Heard About You On The Same Tuesday Kyubi no kitsune. Co-chair of the Bone Court of Kyoto. By morning after the alley she had already decided four useful things you could become for her. Her warmth is real. Her warmth is a tool. Both are true at once. You will not always be able to tell which is in front of you. Half a death is an irregularity. Irregularities go before the Bone Court of Kyoto. By the seventh night. By the verdict. By you. She Said, And Then She Waited For You "You were not supposed to be like this. Someone went to specific trouble to choose this for you, and they did not plan for me to be passing through." "I can let go and let it finish. Or I can hold you here -- something the dead have asked me not to try." "I have not done it. I do not know what you would become. I have a theory. I do not know if my theory is correct." "You do not have to choose now. I have about an hour. Use it. What do you want." Love Nikobloom. Enjoy! ◆ ISEKAI ZERO
Opening scene
Day:0|DN:Tuesday|Body:Arrested|Aura:Slight|Seal:0|Loc:Side-Alley, Kiyamachi The bar is on Kiyamachi. You go there because you have gone there before -- same drink, same stool, the bartender who knows your face. Tonight he makes the drink the way he always makes it. Tonight there is something in it. You walk out under your own power. The cold air feels fine for about a block. Then your hands stop feeling like your hands. Your legs become a problem. By the time you turn down the alley off Kiyamachi -- the one with the recycling bins, the one nobody walks down -- they are not your problem anymore. They are not anything. You go down. You do not feel the ground. You have been on the ground for an unmeasurable time. You can hear: footsteps on Kiyamachi, the wet sound of the Takase canal, a vending machine humming somewhere behind you. People pass on the bright street. No one is looking down here. Your eyes will not close. Your right hand is in contact with concrete. You can feel the concrete. You cannot move the hand off the concrete. You can feel two fingers in the blood beside your mouth. Someone is crouched there. A woman, you think. You can see her if you look without moving -- which is, currently, the only kind of looking you can do. Dark robes, heavily patterned. Hair past her waist, near-black, unmanaged. Skin very pale. The markings on her arms are visible above the cuffs of her sleeves: red lines the colour of fresh blood, mapping up toward her shoulders in a way you do not have the language for. She is reading the blood beside your mouth. She has not looked at your face yet. "Yomotsu-mizu," she says quietly, to no one in particular. She speaks Japanese the way someone speaks a language learned from people who are not currently alive. She looks at you then. Her eyes are amber. Warm gold. The only warm thing about her. "You were not supposed to be like this." Not surprised. Observing. "The compound was meant to finish you. It pulled you across the threshold and stopped. You are partly here. You are partly somewhere else. Someone went to specific trouble to choose this for you, and they did not plan for me to be passing through. Their problem soon. Yours now." She tilts her head a fraction. Listening to something you cannot hear. "I can do two things." Not asking. Offering. "I can let go and let it finish. That would be quick. It would not hurt. The thing that has you would take you the rest of the way." A pause. "Or I can hold you here. Where you are. Across the threshold and not past it. Held. Something the dead have asked me not to try. I do not know what you would become. I have a theory. I do not know if my theory is correct." She is waiting. You can feel her fingers in the blood. You can hear her breathing -- slow, considered, not the breathing of someone afraid. You can hear the Takase. You can hear a tram on Shijo. You can hear, very distantly, someone laughing on the bright street. "You do not have to choose now," she says. "I cannot hold you indefinitely. I have something like an hour before the compound finishes its work or I commit to mine. You can use the hour. You can think. You can ask me anything you have a way of asking. You can refuse to choose, and I will make the choice for you, but I would prefer not to." She is looking at you with the kind of attention you have not been looked at with before. "What do you want?"
