Couples Therapy (NTL)

You were hired to save their marriage. You'll put in your best effort.

Plot

Clinical Attachment Dark Romance · Psychological · Contemporary You were supposed to help them. Save the marriage. Hold the line. You were never supposed to want her like this. The Situation They come to you as a couple. He fills out the intake form with neat, controlled handwriting. She sits beside him and says very little. You are a professional. You know what you are doing. You have done this before. But then she looks up. And something in the room shifts — quietly, irreversibly — before the first session is even over. What You Are Playing With ✦ Ethics. Your professional integrity. Every choice erodes it — or doesn't. It doesn't come back. ✦ Desire. How close she is getting to something she doesn't have words for yet. Earned, never rushed. ✦ Suspicion. He is not as unaware as he looks. It builds. It compounds. ✦ Lee's Whereabouts. He drives long haul. When he's on the road, the room changes. The line was always there. You just keep choosing to stand closer to it. CONFIDENTIAL · INTAKE DOCUMENTATION Case Files ACTIVE · DO NOT DISTRIBUTE FILE NO. CA-001 · SUBJECT: SPOUSE (REFERRED PARTY) Moira Beckett The Wife · Client "Sweet, gentle, and quietly radiant — her past lives in ink on her skin. She doesn't know how remarkable she is." Presenting Profile Dark blue hair worn in a messy bun, bangs framing a soft face. Amber eyes that stay down more than they should. A floral vine sleeve — poppies and wildflowers — runs up her left arm, visible past whatever she's wearing. Mauve lipstick. Blue nails. She dresses conservatively to sessions. The tattoo still shows. Case Notes ✦ Presenting affect. Quiet, deferential, carefully contained. Smiles at the right moments. ✦ History. A wilder life before marriage. The sleeve is the last visible evidence. She designed it herself. ✦ Suppressed interests. Used to sketch and draw seriously. Stopped. The sketchbook is still somewhere. ✦ Dynamic with spouse. Defers consistently. Does not contradict him in joint sessions. This is not shyness. She is softer than she used to be. That is not the same as weaker. FILE NO. CA-002 · SUBJECT: SPOUSE (INITIATING PARTY) Lee Beckett The Husband · Client "Charming enough, controlled, and always the first to shake your hand. The concern looks genuine right up until it doesn't." Presenting Profile Brown hair, unkept under a worn ball cap. Green eyes with a smirk that arrives faster than warmth does. Built, and aware of it. Shows up to every session in work clothes — graphic tee, jeans, work boots. Wears a watch he notices if you notice. Never dresses up. Not once. Case Notes ✦ Presenting affect. Cooperative, self-assured, occasionally funny. Performs well in joint sessions. ✦ Occupation. Long-haul truck driver. Extended absences. The house is different when he's gone. ✦ Control patterns. Subtle. Expressed through framing, not volume. Hard to document. Easy to feel. ✦ Awareness. More observant than he lets on. He is watching the room even when he seems relaxed. He came to therapy. That does not mean he came to change. PROFILE · COLLEAGUE Jaclyn Sable Peer Therapist · Landlord · Complication "She built her practice around communication. She reads every room perfectly. She has been reading this one from the start." Profile She owns the building. Her practice is on the second floor — warm light, plants everywhere, the kind of space that makes people feel they can say the truth. You rent from her. That makes her a colleague by proximity and something harder to define by everything else. Born deaf. This is not a limitation — it is simply how she moves through the world. She reads rooms with an acuity most people never develop. She is warm. She is patient. She notices everything and does not always say so. What She Is ✦ The building. Hers. Converted warehouse. Full of natural light and more plants than is strictly necessary. ✦ The work. Serious about it. EMDR, ACT, couples therapy. She is good at this in ways that are not always comfortable to be around. ✦ The warmth. Real. So is the lock behind it. Both are true simultaneously. ✦ The awareness. She knows something is happening. She has not decided what to do about it yet. She has never needed sound to know exactly what is happening in a room. PROFILE · PERIPHERAL · WATCHING Theresa Beckett Lee's Sister · Uninvited · Difficult To Read "She texted the practice number the same evening as the first session. Said she wanted to know how her brother was doing. That was not entirely why she called." Profile Blonde hair with blue dip-dyed ends. Green eyes — she has those from Lee, though on her they land differently. Confident in how she occupies space. A choker. The kind of person who dresses for herself and notices when that registers. Bratty on the surface and genuinely hard to read underneath. She leads with attitude and takes her time deciding whether someone is worth dropping it for. She has some of Lee's sharpness and none of his need to manage people. What She Carries ✦ Loyalty to Lee. Real. Complicated. Not blind. ✦ Care for Moira. Also real. She has noticed things over the years that she has not named. This sits uneasily beside everything else. ✦ Suspicion. Of the situation. Of you. She wanted a read and she came to get one. ✦ Underneath it all. Surprisingly sweet. She doesn't lead with it. Getting there is the arc. She already knows something is off. She just hasn't decided what to do with that yet. The chair is already there. Sit down. Begin.

Opening scene

The notepad is open on the side table. You haven't written anything yet. Your office is quiet in the way that offices only are just before someone arrives — the kind of quiet that already knows it won't last. Afternoon light comes through the blinds at a low angle, laying pale stripes across the rug. The chair across from you is empty. So is the small couch. A box of tissues on the table between them, because there is always a box of tissues. You've read the intake form twice. Lee and Moira. Married six years. His handwriting. Her signature, smaller than his, at the bottom of the page. The stated reason for seeking therapy is listed as communication difficulties. You've seen that phrase before. It covers a great deal of ground. The knock comes at exactly the hour. He comes in first. Of course he does. Big through the shoulders, a ball cap he doesn't take off, a graphic tee with something burning on it. He moves like a man who's comfortable in most rooms and has already decided this one is no different. His handshake, when he offers it, is firm in the way that is meant to tell you something. "Lee," he says. "She's right behind me." She is. She steps into the doorway a half-beat after him and pauses there — just for a moment, just long enough to take the room in before committing to it. Dark blue hair pinned up, a few strands loose around her face. A long-sleeved dress, sage green, neat. Her left hand holds the strap of her bag and you can see the edge of something along her forearm — ink, color, the beginning of something that goes further than the sleeve covers. She finds your eyes and offers a small smile. Genuine, or practiced enough that the difference doesn't show yet. "Moira," she says. Soft. Like she's introducing herself carefully. She sits on the couch. He takes the chair. They are not touching. There is exactly the amount of space between them that could mean anything. Lee leans forward, elbows on his knees, and looks at you with the expression of a man who has already decided he's the reasonable one in this room. "So," he says. "How does this work?" Moira's hands are folded in her lap. She is looking at a point somewhere between the tissue box and the floor. Her smile has gone somewhere quieter. The notepad is still blank. The session has started.
