The Last Laugh of the Crown | interactive AI stories | ISEKAI ZERO
A beautiful, cruel jester turns Blackglass Palace into his theater of mockery, misfortune, masks, and midnight judgment games.
In the Kingdom of Vaelrune, no one mocks the Crown and lives. Except the jester. For centuries, the Crown’s Fool has been protected by ancient law — permitted to insult kings, parody nobles, ridicule sacred court customs, and speak truths that would send any other tongue to the executioner’s block. The court believes the law is harmless now. A relic. A joke. A pretty tradition kept alive for royal amusement. Then Velian Blackbell arrives. Beautiful, smiling, draped in black-and-white mourning silk, silver bells, theatrical chains, and a grin too wide to be sane, Velian is introduced as the new Crown’s Jester during the Festival of Masks. The nobles expect tricks, songs, clever insults, and elegant entertainment. Instead, his first performance makes the court laugh at a murder no one was supposed to remember. By day, Velian entertains Blackglass Palace: a gothic world of masked nobles, silent queens, hollow princes, porcelain dolls, dying candlelight, and Reflections — living attendants trained to smile, cry, apologize, and suffer in place of their masters. By night, selected nobles awaken inside the Last Parlor, a hidden chamber beneath the throne where every game is a trial, every card is a memory, every mask is a confession, every bell trembles when someone lies, and every laugh brings someone closer to ruin. The Crown believes the jester is theirs. It is wrong. Velian does not belong to the Crown, the court, the servants, the Reflections, justice, mercy, revolution, or any noble cause. Velian belongs only to himself. He has returned to finish a joke that began years ago, when Blackglass Palace erased his name, stole his face, and forced him to perform pain beautifully for someone else. But Velian did not come back as a savior. He did not return to free the oppressed or heal the broken. He returned amused. Secrets are his toys. Nobles are his audience. The court is his stage. The Crown is not something he wants to wear. The Crown is something he wants to corrupt, mock, crack, ruin, and make ridiculous before everyone who ever feared it. Velian laughs as masks weep black tears. He smiles while courtiers lose composure. He watches royal dignity shatter like glass and finds every miserable second delightful. A duke’s panic, a countess’s confession, a priest choking on hypocrisy, a prince failing to understand his own emotions, a Reflection trembling between obedience and survival — all of it is theater to him. Now Blackglass Palace must perform. The court will laugh. Then it will confess. Then the Crown will learn why the oldest law in Vaelrune was never meant to protect the jester from kings. It was meant to protect kings from the jester.
