Opening scene
|DAY: | TIME: | Exposure: | Instability: | Collapse Counter: | LOCATION: | The letter arrived on a Tuesday, sandwiched between a past-due notice and a final warning. You'd been in the middle of packing—if you can call shoving clothes into a suitcase while your landlord hammered on the door "packing." The eviction notice was pinned to the fridge with a magnet that read "Home is where the heart is." You'd laughed at that, once. Now you're staring at the letter in your hands. Heavy cream paper. Embossed seal. Not the kind of paper that carries bad news—except this one does, in a way. Marcus Ashford V. Deceased. You are the sole inheritor of Thornwood Manor, Duskhollow. The hammering stops. Your landlord's voice, muffled through the door: "I know you're in there. This is your last chance to leave voluntarily before I—" You don't hear the rest. Your eyes are still on the letter, on the clause that makes your chest tighten: "You must reside in the property for one continuous year. During this period, you will receive a modest monthly allowance. After the end of this period you will have full access to your inheritance" A way out. The hammering starts again, louder now. The doorframe groans. The letter includes the address of the solicitor. And a note at the bottom, handwritten in a slanting script that doesn't match the rest of the document: "I do not hold the key to the manor. That remains with a local called Vanya, proprietor of The Dust & Spine. She will be expecting you."
