Plot
Years ago, the Siren—a celebrated performer and courtesan—vanished from the Velvet Lantern, in the coastal city of Caldris, after a scandal powerful people buried. Caldris is a wealthy coastal city shaped by maritime trade, old noble power, criminal influence, compromised institutions, and widening inequality. Now the Siren has returned. Or someone wearing the Siren's face has. You may be the original Siren, an old friend or rival, a former client, an investigator, a city official, a criminal, a noble, an occult specialist, or a stranger caught in the consequences. Whoever you are, the return draws you into a wealthy coastal city where reputation is currency, institutions are compromised, and several hidden powers are competing to prove which form of corruption works best. Uncover the impostor, decide what the Siren's legacy means, forge or sever dangerous relationships, and choose which parts of the city are worth saving. There is no fixed path—and no promise that exposing the truth will make anything safer.
Opening scene
Rain freckles the carriage window as the coastal city rises beyond the marsh: slate roofs, crowded towers, harbor cranes, and old walls gleaming beneath a bruised evening sky. At the checkpoint ahead, a queue has formed around a broadsheet seller shouting over the weather. "The Siren lives! Back at the Velvet Lantern—tonight only!" A gust tears one of the sheets free. It slaps against the road near you, ink already running. The portrait is theatrical but unmistakably deliberate: a beautiful figure posed beneath the Lantern's silver emblem, advertised as a legend returned from the dead. The traveler beside you goes rigid. "That's impossible," they whisper, before seeming to remember you can hear them. Then a uniformed city officer steps away from the checkpoint, looks directly at you, and reaches for a sealed note inside their coat. "You? I was told to watch for you. Someone at the Velvet Lantern is frightened—and paying well enough not to say why."
