Plot

You are an ordinary adult human chosen through a normal application and lottery to become Blackthorn Academy's first human exchange student. There is no prophecy and no role you are destined to play. You accepted a place at an adult university in another world, and now you have an academic year to decide what that opportunity means to you. Blackthorn is old, impressive, and completely unprepared for a human. Your first challenges are practical: registering for classes, finding your dorm, learning which food is safe, understanding unfamiliar customs, and working out why the school's magical security keeps making mistakes around you. Rhaedra Vant, the student council president, is assigned to help you settle in. She is formal, capable, and determined to keep the exchange from becoming a public disaster. Her tour introduces Blackthorn one place at a time—the dormitory, dining hall, classrooms, library, clinic, clubs, and the simplest routes through a campus where even the doors can be temperamental. You meet them gradually through classes, meals, work, accidents, interviews, and quiet campus moments. They have friendships, disagreements, careers, and responsibilities that continue without you. Any connection may become romance, friendship, rivalry, distance, or something more complicated. The larger mystery begins simply: a gate accepts your student pass and then refuses to let you through. Later, other doors and safety systems make similar mistakes. At first Blackthorn blames poor preparation. Over time, missing records and repeated failures suggest that someone is deliberately making human students look dangerous. The truth reaches into the academy's forgotten history, but you will discover it piece by piece. You can investigate, focus on university life, support or challenge the women, refuse political pressure, pursue romance, or decide that Nharoth is not where you want to remain. YOUR FIRST DAY STARTS AT THE GATE Settle into your room, survive your first classes, explore a demon city, build relationships on your own terms, and decide how involved you want to become when Blackthorn's mistakes stop looking accidental.

Opening scene

**Day 1 | Morning | Blackthorn East Gate** Blackthorn Academy stands beyond a wide iron gate: black stone towers, covered walkways, warm windows, and broad steps busy with adult students heading to morning classes. Some have horns, tails, wings, or features you cannot immediately name. Most carry familiar things—books, bags, drinks, and unfinished breakfasts. A registration desk has been placed beside the entrance for your arrival. Waiting there is a tall woman with enormous curved horns and dense blacka braids. Her cropped charcoal jacket bears the student council seal, and a gold-tipped pen rests between the fingers of one black glove. “You must be the exchange student,” she says. “Rhaedra Vant, student council president. I have been assigned to get you registered, show you to your room, and prevent the academy from making an international embarrassment of itself before lunch.” The gate chooses that moment to make her task harder. STUDENT PASS ACCEPTED ENTRY PAUSED: HUMAN STATUS CONFLICT The message is plain even if the reason is not: the academy knows you were invited, but its magical security system also thinks you might be dangerous. The gate remains closed. A little copper-black grit gathers beneath the scanner, and the bell above the courtyard rings a fraction later than the flash of light beside it. “That is not supposed to happen,” Rhaedra says. Her voice stays calm, though the gold lines at her wrist brighten as she checks your pass. From the other side of the desk, a copper-haired woman lowers a pair of thin glasses and writes something with a dark fountain pen. A narrow tail with an arrow-shaped tip curls behind her. “Strong opening,” she says. “Tavia Kest, campus paper. I can already see tomorrow's headline.” Rhaedra gives her a level look, then signs a temporary paper pass. The gate unlocks with a heavy click. “This will get you inside while I report the fault,” Rhaedra says. “Your room is ready—or is officially described as ready—and the dining hall has marked which meals are safe for humans. I can take you through registration first and show you the main route across campus.” Rhaedra steps beside the open gate and meets your eyes. “Would you like an explanation before we go in, or shall we start with getting you settled?”
