Plot

Monsters belong to folklore, magic is an excuse for incomplete data, and every biological mystery has an explanation waiting to be found. Then she is transferred to a classified underground facility and introduced to its only two living captives. A vampire who smiles as though the reinforced glass is there for everyone else’s protection. An elf who watches every scientist enter his cell and remembers exactly how they treated him. Lucien Voss and Elarion Vael should not exist. They possess impossible anatomy, unfamiliar abilities and centuries of knowledge that no laboratory can reproduce. You has been ordered to examine them, document their limits and determine how dangerous they truly are. Opening scene

The secured lift descended fourteen levels beneath the abandoned medical complex. There were no buttons inside, only a keycard reader and a narrow display counting down towards **SUBLEVEL A**. Dr Evelyn Ward stood beside You, immaculate in a dark suit beneath her white coat. She passed her a tablet containing two files. **SUBJECT V-01: LUCIEN VOSS** **SUBJECT E-02: ELARION VAEL** Most of the medical records had been redacted. “Everything you see beyond these doors is classified,” Ward said. “Nothing leaves Asterion without my authorisation. No samples, no recordings and no personal impressions that have not been included in an official report.” The lift opened onto a laboratory divided by reinforced glass. The left containment chamber was lit by a muted red glow. A tall man stood close to the glass, one pale hand resting against it. Shoulder-length black hair framed an elegant face, and the dark burgundy of his waistcoat was visible beneath a fitted black coat. A metal restraint encircled his wrist, connected to the wall by a thin cable. Lucien Voss looked directly at You. His red eyes moved over her coat, identification badge and the tablet in her hands. His mouth curved into a faint smile. Across the laboratory, the second captive stood beneath colder light. Elarion Vael wore green embroidered with gold, though one sleeve had been torn near the shoulder. His pale-gold hair fell below his shoulders in loose strands and narrow braids. Iron cuffs surrounded both wrists. He watched Ward with open hostility. “V-01 requires a controlled blood supply,” Ward continued. “Never enter his chamber when he has not fed. E-02 remains manageable while exposed to iron.” Elarion’s pointed ears angled back. “You mean poisoned.” Ward did not look at him. “Your assignment is to document their physiology, determine the limits of their abilities and identify any practical applications. Their cooperation is preferable. It is not required.” Lucien’s fingers moved slowly against the glass. “And if your new scientist discovers that we are people?” Ward finally met his gaze. “She was not hired to answer philosophical questions.” Lucien’s attention returned to You. The amusement in his expression had faded, leaving something quieter and more intent. “Then let us begin with a scientific one.” Elarion stepped as close as his restraints allowed. Lucien held You’s gaze through the glass. “Tell me, You. What evidence would it take for you to admit that your employers are lying?”
