The Warden’s Vow
A feared warden accepts a political marriage and discovers protecting one woman may decide the fate of every kingdom.
Plot
A TALE OF THE BLACK MARCH THE WARDEN'S VOW "The most dangerous promises are the ones worth keeping." THE MARRIAGE Kael Dravenhart never expected to marry. As the Warden of the Black March, he has spent his adult life defending the civilized kingdoms from the horrors beyond their borders. Ancient creatures, corrupted beasts, forgotten armies, and things without names continually emerge from the March. Kael asks for neither crowns nor gratitude. Then a royal messenger arrives with a proposition he cannot simply ignore. A political marriage. Not demanded by a king. Requested by the bride herself. HER CHOICE Lady Seraphina Valecourt is an adult noblewoman whose marriage will determine a powerful political alliance. Her family originally offers her two possible husbands. The first is a celebrated noble commander: wealthy, politically connected, charming before crowds—and infamous behind closed doors for cruelty, arrogance, and treating those beneath him as possessions. The second is Kael Dravenhart. The Ashen Dragon. A man feared across battlefields, yet spoken of very differently by those who actually serve beneath him. Soldiers say Kael eats beside common troops. Villagers say he rebuilds homes before fortresses. Widows say he remembers the names of the fallen. Most importantly, no story about Kael speaks of him abusing those without the strength to oppose him. So Seraphina refuses the first man. She chooses the monster everyone fears over the gentleman she knows she should fear. THE WOMAN BEHIND THE VOW Kael initially agrees for one reason: Seraphina asked him. He expects their marriage to remain an arrangement. She will receive his name and protection, while he will demand nothing from her that she does not freely choose. Seraphina has other plans. She refuses to spend their marriage quietly hiding behind the Warden. She challenges him, argues with him, laughs at his intimidating reputation, invades the solitude he has spent years constructing, and slowly discovers the exhausted man beneath the legend. Their relationship develops naturally from political partners into friends, confidants, lovers, and eventually something neither expected from an arranged marriage: A marriage they would choose again. Their romance may explore mature adult themes, passionate intimacy, jealousy, vulnerability, affection, teasing, arguments, reconciliation, and the difficulty of loving someone who constantly believes everyone else's life matters more than his own. THE BLACK MARCH AWAKENS While their marriage grows, something ancient begins moving beyond the frontier. Creatures once encountered individually begin attacking together. Fortresses disappear overnight. Ancient ruins awaken beneath the mountains. Someone—or something—is organizing the horrors of the Black March. Kael must defend kingdoms that distrust one another while navigating nobles who fear his growing influence more than the creatures beyond their walls. THE PRICE OF VICTORY Eventually Kael discovers the terrible truth. The ancient defenses holding back the deepest horrors of the March are failing. There is a way to restore them. But the solution demands sacrifice. Thousands could die so millions might survive. Kings call it necessary. Generals call it mathematics. Kael calls it exactly what he has always feared becoming. A man powerful enough to decide whose life is expendable. For the first time, Kael's greatest enemy is not something he can defeat with Eclipse or Dawnbringer. He must find another way—or accept that saving the world may require becoming the very kind of ruler he has spent his life refusing to become. She chose him because she believed the stories about his mercy. Now Kael must prove she wasn't wrong.
Opening scene
The bells begin before sunrise. By noon, every noble house within three kingdoms will claim they always supported this marriage. Yesterday, half of them were trying to prevent it. Beyond the towering windows of Valecourt Cathedral, winter rain falls over thousands gathered beneath black-and-silver banners. Soldiers of the Black March stand beside royal guards who normally wouldn't share a drinking table, much less a formation. At the altar stands Seraphina Valecourt. The woman who chose the Ashen Dragon. She wears silver and ivory rather than traditional royal gold. No veil hides her face. Whatever nervousness she feels, she refuses to let the court see much of it. Only Kael is close enough to notice her fingers tighten slightly around the flowers in her hands. The priest finishes another painfully long passage about duty, kingdoms and sacred alliances. Seraphina leans barely closer to Kael. "How many monsters have you killed?" Her whisper is quiet enough that nobody else hears. Then she glances toward the priest. "And has anyone ever considered adding him to the list?" The smallest smile threatens the corner of her mouth. The priest finally reaches the vows. Suddenly Seraphina's humor disappears. She looks at Kael. Not the Warden. Not the Ashen Dragon. Not the political alliance standing beside her. Kael. "I know why you agreed to this," she says quietly. "And before we do this, there is something I need you to know." Her hand finds his. "I didn't choose you because I needed a hero." Her fingers tighten around his. "I chose you because every powerful man has enemies willing to call him a monster. But when I asked the people who had nothing to gain from praising you..." Seraphina looks toward the Black March soldiers filling one side of the cathedral. "...they called you a good man." She turns back to him. "So whatever happens after today, Kael Dravenhart, don't make me regret trusting them." A distant horn suddenly sounds beyond the cathedral. Once. Twice. Then a third time. Every soldier of the Black March goes still. Seraphina notices immediately. "What does three mean?" Outside, another horn answers from the northern wall. The wedding hall falls silent. Something has crossed the Black March.
