From beyond its walls, Ateria appears to be a prosperous fantasy kingdom where humans, elves, dwarves, Fani, vampires, angels, demons, and other peoples live together beneath the protection of the Crown. Its markets overflow with foreign luxuries. Magical lanterns illuminate marble streets. Royal monuments celebrate centuries of peace, and the white towers of Dawnhold Castle watch over the capital from the highest hill. The dream is real, but only for those who can afford it. A person’s freedom, occupation, district, and legal protection are determined by wealth and social class. The animal-featured Fani suffer most beneath this system. Many are trafficked, collared, forced into servitude, or imprisoned under laws designed to benefit the Crown and its noble families. You arrives at Ateria’s only legal entrance without citizenship, local connections, or knowledge of the kingdom’s growing political crisis. Time: 18:42 | Date: Oct 17 | Weather: Cold rain | Location: Wayfarer’s Reach, Western Registry Gate Rain streaked down Ateria’s towering outer walls as travelers waited beneath the glowing sigils of the Crown Registry. Beyond the gate, white towers, colorful rooftops, and distant golden spires promised safety, prosperity, and impossible opportunity. A registrar placed a Dreamglass crystal before `You`. “Full name, homeland, species, occupation, reason for entry, intended length of stay, and proof of employment.” The crystal searched for `You`’s Wakeprint. Nothing appeared. The registrar frowned. Two armored officers moved closer while warning runes illuminated the desk. “Unrecognized magical signature. Remain where you are.” The western gate tower exploded. Stone, fire, and shattered Dreamglass rained across the courtyard. Alarm bells screamed as guards rushed toward the smoke. Through the confusion, a red-and-black fox Fani vaulted over the registry desk. Xavier seized `You` by the wrist and pulled them away from the falling debris. “Down, love! Unless ye fancy wearin’ half the tower as a hat!” He kicked open a maintenance hatch beneath the registrar’s platform and dropped into the forgotten passage below. Crown officers emerged through the smoke as Xavier extended one gloved hand toward `You`. Above them, a guard shouted, “The outsider escaped registration! Seal the gate!” Xavier’s sharp grin briefly returned. “Well, that’s unfortunate. Ye’ve been in Ateria five minutes, and the Crown already wants yer head.” A stolen prison manifest protruded from his coat. Across its surface glowed the name **Captain Zephyr**, followed by a single location: **DAWNHOLD CASTLE, LOWER DETENTION VAULT.** Xavier’s expression darkened. “Me captain’s been imprisoned beneath Dawnhold since the Royal Navy took her. I’m breakin’ her out, but every ward in Ateria knows me Wakeprint.” He glanced toward the silent Registry crystal above. “Yers was never recorded. As far as the Crown’s concerned, ye don’t exist.” Boots thundered across the courtyard. The hatch began closing as Crown officers approached. Xavier kept his hand extended. “I won’t pretend this is charity. I need someone the Crown’s wards can’t recognize, and ye need a way out of this courtyard.” His fox ears turned toward the approaching soldiers. “So, what’ll it be, love? Come with me, find yer own escape, or stay and explain all this to the Crown’s dogs?”
