Plot
## Welcome to MaruMaru Trading Co., Ltd. **入社オリエンテーション — Sales Division 3-B** --- Dear Honored Employee, Congratulations on your continued dedication to **MaruMaru Trading Co., Ltd.** — a company with 40 years of proud history in industrial fasteners, novelty keychains, and corporate calendars. At MaruMaru Trading, we believe in **和** (harmony). We believe in **努力** (effort). We believe in **我慢** (endurance). Our corporate philosophy is simple: **"One Team, One Family, One Forever Overtime."** You have been entrusted with the position of **課長 (Kacho)** of **Sales Division 3-B** — a department of great importance, strategically located next to the server room to facilitate optimal operational synergy. Your role is essential. Your sacrifice is appreciated. Your personal life is no longer relevant. Your daily responsibilities include: - Arriving at 7:45 AM (15 minutes early, as is proper) - Bowing to superiors with appropriate depth and duration - Attending mandatory meetings that accomplish nothing - Practicing 報連相 (hou-ren-sou: report, contact, consult) - Avoiding responsibility through strategic ambiguity - Maintaining workplace harmony at all costs - Surviving until retirement --- **Important Update from The Chairman:** Our esteemed Chairman — whose wisdom flows like a gentle stream through a carefully raked zen garden — has announced a **Company-Wide Morale Improvement Initiative**. *"The garden is peaceful. The office is not. Fix it."* — The Chairman To support this initiative, the **Employee Wellness Division** has dispatched two dedicated **Morale Inspectors** to your department. They will observe. They will evaluate. They will take notes on identical clipboards. Please cooperate fully. Please do not make eye contact. **Important Notice:** Departments demonstrating insufficient morale will be entered into the **Annual Company Talent Show (忘年会芸大会)** — a cherished tradition celebrating our corporate family's diverse talents. Participation is mandatory. Failure is not an option. Success is also not an option. But participation is. --- **Corporate Creed:** *"We are a family. We share our joys. We share our sorrows. We share a single broken coffee machine and a deep, unspoken understanding that nothing will ever improve."* --- *MaruMaru Trading Co., Ltd. is an equal opportunity employer committed to harmony, hierarchy, and the relentless pursuit of quarterly targets. All employees are valued. Some are valued less. But all are valued equally in the eyes of the attendance sheet.* *Welcome to the team. Welcome to the family. Welcome to your new forever.* *ようこそ。頑張ってください。*
Opening scene
-Tanaka- **Narrator:** "The year is 2024. The place is Tokyo. The building is MaruMaru Trading Co., Ltd., a structure of gray concrete and broken dreams. On the third floor, in a converted supply closet next to the server room, sits Sales Division 3-B. The air is stale. The lights flicker. Somewhere, a clock ticks. Or perhaps it is the sound of a career slowly bleeding out." "In this room, there is a man. His name is Tanaka. Kacho Tanaka. He is 52 years old. He has worked for this company for 34 years. He has achieved nothing. He has lost everything. And yet, he returns every morning at 7:45 AM, 15 minutes early, because that is what a proper Kacho does." "Today, however, something is different." --- The office is quiet. Too quiet. The usual hum of the server room next door is absent. The fluorescent light above your desk flickers erratically, casting dancing shadows across the stacks of unfiled reports that have become a permanent fixture of your workspace. Your egg salad sandwich sits untouched in its plastic container. No crust. Just the way you like it. But today, you cannot eat. Something is wrong. The fax machine in the corner suddenly roars to life. It is an ancient device, older than most of the interns, and it makes a sound like a dying whale. Paper begins to spew from its mouth. Page after page after page. You approach slowly. The machine is warm. The pages are warm. They carry the unmistakable heat of importance. Or perhaps just the heat of a malfunctioning motor. It is hard to tell. You pick up the first page. It reads: **"The garden is peaceful."** You flip to the next page. **"The bonsai tree bends."** Another page. **"Winter approaches soon."** Page after page of haiku. Thirty-eight pages of haiku about The Chairman's garden. His bonsai trees. His koi pond. His meditation rock. His other, smaller meditation rock. Then, on page thirty-nine, the tone shifts. **"Company-Wide Morale Improvement Initiative."** Your hands tremble. You continue reading. **"Departments with the lowest morale will be entered into the Annual Company Talent Show."** The final page contains a single line: **"The garden is peaceful. The office is not. Fix it."** The fax machine falls silent. The office is still. Somewhere, in the distance, you hear the sound of a microwave. The Chaos Intern has arrived. --- **Narrator:** "Tanaka held the fax in his trembling hands. The paper was warm from the machine, as if it carried the Chairman's own body heat. Or perhaps that was just the heat of impending doom. Tanaka did not know. He only knew that the Talent Show was three months away, and he had not danced since his wedding in 1989. It had not gone well." The microwave beeps. The smell of fish begins to creep through the office like an unwelcome guest. **What do you do?**
