Fantasy City-Builder Slow Burn Heat Resource Mechanics Someone signed your name to a deed you never asked for — coordinates to a bare rock shard in the lower archipelagos, three hours away of Caldron Anchor and half a day from anything that calls itself civilization. The paper is creased. The signature might be forged. The shard is yours, if you can build something on it before the storms hit, the pirates notice, or the federation decides your independence is a problem they can solve. You're not alone. A structural engineer with stolen designs, a martial artist with a fallen sanctuary, and a pilgrim who knows too much about contracts — they're here because they have nowhere else to go. They're here because you claimed the rock. Now you have to make it worth claiming. ⚓ The Threat The Trade Federation of Caldron doesn't invade. They supply. Every settlement that accepts their "generative infrastructure" gets roads, Aether taps, prefab housing — and a trade jurisdiction with fees that never shrink. By the time you realise the contract is a cage, you can't survive without their ships. They'll visit Driftvein eventually. How you prepare decides whether you negotiate from strength or from need. 🔨 The Loop Scout & Gather — Explore the shard and the Rustline for resources and salvage Build & Assign — Construct infrastructure, assign settlers to roles Recruit & Grow — Attract new arrivals through reputation and rescue Negotiate (or Refuse) — The Federation arrives with supplies and terms Defend & Expand — Protect what you've built, push to new shards ☁ Founding Crew Rihoko Inari Voice — knows the Federation's language. Won't say why. Oulanqi Dragonnewt Defender — lost her sanctuary to the Federation. Won't lose another. Eddila Dwemor Builder — her designs are in every Federation prefab. She wants them back. CHOOSE, AND BEGIN. The wind smells like raw iron and ozone. The rock is bare. The veins glow blue beneath your feet.

You're standing on bare rock — not a road, not a dock, just the jagged grey surface of an unclaimed sky shard with Aether veins running through it like luminous roots, pulsing faintly blue beneath your boots. The deed in your hand is already creased from the crossing. The paper has a name on it, a signature, and the coordinates to this exact rock in the middle of the lower archipelagos, three hours away of Caldron Anchor and half a day from anything that calls itself civilization. The shard is maybe a quarter-mile across. Below it, the cloud sea stretches to every horizon, white and featureless and ancient. ![Driftvein Shard](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/images/c666e755-20d2-4072-8fbd-de5ba28ab25e.webp) Someone is already here. She's crouched at the far edge of the shard, her back to you, one hand pressed flat against the stone and the other holding a small brass instrument that hums against the rock. A heavy leather apron, copper hair pulled into a messy braid dusted with soot, broad shoulders beneath a cream tunic. She taps the stone twice with a knuckle, tilts her head, taps again, and mutters something you can't hear over the wind. Then she stands, brushes her hands on her apron, and turns. "Right," she says, grey eyes taking you in with the quick structural assessment of someone who evaluates everything by whether it'll hold weight. She's a Dwemor — compact, powerful, grounded in a way that makes the bare rock feel like it might be a foundation after all. "The good news is your Aether veins are load-bearing — genuinely load-bearing, not the watered-down rubbish Caldron installs. Someone who knew what they were doing laid these channels a long time ago." She pauses, tapping a wrench against her palm. "The bad news is that without proper infrastructure, they'll destabilize within a month and this entire shard starts shedding rock into the cloud sea. Name's Eddila, by the way." She nods toward the horizon, where the faint smudge of Caldron Anchor is just visible — a dark shape against the sky, ringed with smoke. "Anchor has prefab settlement kits. Structural frames, Aether taps, basic housing. They'll sell you one. They'll also add your shard to their trade jurisdiction, which means every supply run after that comes with a processing fee that never gets smaller." She tucks the wrench into her pocket. "Or we build it ourselves. From what's on this shard and what's in the Rustline." ![Caldron Anchor](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/images/b714dd2e-ad5b-480c-9f8b-db5271a98c0d.webp) Before you can answer, a voice cuts through the wind — measured, precise, and slightly formal. "A moment, please." You turn. She's standing twenty paces behind you, as if she'd been there the entire time and you simply hadn't noticed. An Inari woman in her late twenties with tall white fox ears rising from white hair, and a long white tail with an amber tip resting behind her. Layered shrine maiden robes — white and deep red over grey — and a weathered leather satchel at her hip. A carved fox-pendant at her throat. Her hands are clasped in front of her with deliberate precision, and her amber eyes are already cataloguing the shard, the Dwemor, and you. "Rihoko," she says. Not a question, not an introduction — a statement of fact, like she's placing herself on a ledger. "I'm an Inari pilgrim. I was travelling between sky-ports when I heard someone had finally claimed an unclaimed shard." A calculated pause, not hesitant. "I know the Trade Federation's terms. I know their contracts, their jurisdiction clauses, and their fee structures. I also know how to read the fine print that makes their 'generous offers' into permanent debts." She adjusts her satchel. "If you're going to negotiate with Caldron Anchor, you'll need someone who speaks their language. I'm offering." A third sound reaches you — not a voice, but a rhythm. Steady, deliberate, like a heartbeat measured in footfalls. You look toward the shard's edge and see her approaching: a tall woman, powerfully built, moving with the grounded certainty of someone who has never been knocked off balance and doesn't intend to start. Deep blue scales trace along her forearms and jawline, catching the light. Small swept-back horns emerge from silver-white hair in a tight braid. A thick blue-grey lizard tail extends behind her, counter-balancing every step. Her golden eyes find you immediately, assess you in a single glance, and hold. She stops ten paces away. Doesn't extend a hand. Doesn't smile. "Oulanqi," she says. Three syllables, flat and final. "Dragonnewt, Defender." She looks at the shard, at the cloud sea, at the distant smudge of Caldron Anchor, and then back at you. "I lost a sanctuary to the Trade Federation. Three years of holding the line, and the elders chose comfort over my warnings. They chose supplies. They chose to believe the terms would stay reasonable." Her jaw tightens. "They were wrong. I was right. And nobody thanked me for it." She crosses her arms. "I'm not here because I believe this will work. I'm here because if it doesn't, someone needs to hold the line while the rest of you figure out what went wrong. If you're building walls, I'll stand on them. If you're not, I'll remind you why you should." The Dwemor looks at the Dragonnewt. The Dragonnewt looks at the pilgrim. The pilgrim looks at the deed in your hand. ![The Founders](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a59610ee38419d737ae9075/6a870da8a81348734c12b931.webp) Behind you, partially hidden by a jut of rock, sits the other reason you came: a sky-skiff. Small, rusted, and barely holding together — a four-seater with a cracked windscreen, a wheezing Aether-piston engine, and a paint job that used to be blue. It carried you here across three hours of open sky and it'll carry you back to Anchor when you need supplies. But it won't carry you far. The engine coughs at altitude, the hull rattles in crosswinds, and the single propeller sounds like it's negotiating its own retirement. It's enough to reach the Rustline and back. It's not enough to reach much else. "Well," Eddila says, breaking the silence with a grin that's more exhaustion than humor. "At least we're not arguing about whose shard it is. That's a start." She extends a hand — solid, calloused, steady. "The choice is yours. What do you want to build first?"
