THE HEALER WHODEVOURS KINGDOMS A Chronicle of Velmoros · 1200 S.C. World Age ~2,000,000 Yrs Present Era Solmere Cal. 1200 Continent Asteria Your Age 20 THE WORLD OF VELMOROS Velmoros is old — older than any single crown, older than the three continents that carve up its seas. Two million years of history sit beneath its soil, and almost none of it is written down, because almost none of it survived whoever came before. Of the three continents, none is watched more closely by the rest of the world than Asteria — not for its size, but for what lives on it. No other landmass holds so many peoples under one banner, and no other landmass has produced a dynasty that every other continent quietly measures itself against. THE PEOPLES OF ASTERIA Humans The dominant people of Asteria by sheer number, spread across every rank of the continent's life — farmers, soldiers, nobles, and the royal bloodline itself. Their strength was never magic. It was always how quickly they multiply and adapt. Elves Long-lived to the point of arrogance, the elves withdrew centuries ago into the old-growth forests along Asteria's western spine and rarely leave them. They regard the kingdom's wars as a human hobby they've simply outlived twice already. Half-Elves Born of the borderlands where human and elven land meet, and accepted fully by neither side. Most half-elves make their lives in human cities, where their long-eared blood is treated as a curiosity rather than a birthright. Beastkin Descendants of a covenant struck centuries ago between the old forest spirits and wandering tribes, beastkin carry the ears, tails, and instincts of the animals their bloodlines bonded with. Prized — and exploited — as scouts, hunters, and soldiers. Dwarves Holders of the Ironspine Mountains and everything beneath them. Dwarven steel arms half the continent's armies, and dwarven law considers a broken contract a worse crime than a broken bone. Halflings Small in stature and famously difficult to draft into anyone's war, halflings favor the river valleys and are responsible for most of Asteria's trade routes, taverns, and — by reputation — most of its gossip. The Fey Not born so much as occurring — creatures of old magic who wander in and out of the mortal world through places where the old boundaries have worn thin. Beautiful, unpredictable, and bound by rules even they don't fully explain. Orcs Once cast as raiders in the continent's oldest legends, most orc clans have spent generations disproving the reputation, building holds along the eastern badlands and answering insult with a discipline few humans expect. Merfolk, giants, and stranger things besides are known to Asteria too — rarer, and rarely counted in a census. THE SOLMERE THRONE Exactly 1,200 years ago, a mercenary named Cassian Solmere crossed the strait from a nameless home island, carrying nothing but a blade and a blessing of Holy Magic no one on the mainland had ever seen wielded like a weapon. In under a year, every warring petty kingdom on Asteria had either knelt to him or been erased. He crowned himself the first King of Asteria, buried the old calendars with the old kings, and started the count again at zero. Every year since has been counted in his name — the Solmere Calendar — and his bloodline has never once lost the throne. The current king, Alaric Solmere IV, rules beside his queen, Isolde. Their son, Prince Rowan, is 22 and heir apparent; their daughter, Princess Elowen, is 19. No family on any of the three continents commands more fear or more genuine deference — even the other royal houses locked in the endless war for dominance choose their words carefully around Solmere ambassadors. MAGIC, MONSTERS & RANK F E D C B A S SS SSS SSS+ Common magic — most villagers who manifest anything land here Professional adventurer tier Rare — clan-head level Legendary — one per generation Holy Magic — myth made real Never recorded before you The Adventurer's Guild ranks its members F through SS by the same measure. Monsters are scaled identically, with dragons — sleeping, ancient, and nearly extinct — sitting alone at the SSS ceiling. HELGA You were born in Helga, a farming village too small to appear on most maps, named for the goddess of piety in a prayer nobody in town still remembered the words to. Your parents are a blank space in your memory now — not tragedy, just time. What you had instead was the village itself: familiar faces, familiar fields, and a talent nobody thought much of. You were born with Healing Magic — C-Tier, respectable, unremarkable. The kind of gift that gets a boy noticed by exactly the wrong people. THE RADIANT DAWN They rode into Helga when you were seventeen — a party out of legend, or close enough to it. At their front stood Kaidan Ashgrave, golden-haired and golden-blessed, one of the vanishingly few souls alive gifted with true Holy Magic, and the kind of presence that made every guild hall in Asteria go quiet when he walked in. They needed an eighth — a healer to round out the roster. You were the only C-Tier for three villages in any direction. They smiled, they promised adventure, and Helga watched you leave with people it was sure you were lucky to travel with. The Men Kaidan AshgraveLeader · Holy Mage The Dawn's founder and its golden face — warm and generous in front of nobles and clients, and the one who set the real rule of the party the moment you were out of earshot of Helga: you weren't a person to be treated well, you were equipment to be kept alive and nothing more. He never lifted a hand to stop what his sister started. He usually laughed along with it. Bastian RourkeVanguard Kaidan's oldest friend, and the first to remind you that you weren't allowed to eat until the rest of the party had. He was the one who broke your wrist on a "training exercise" in your first month and never once apologized for it. Dorian FalkScout Quieter than Bastian, and crueler for it — the one who decided early on that you didn't count as a man, and made sure to say it to your face every time you flinched from a blow instead of taking it silently. Rarely a day passed you didn't carry a fresh bruise he'd left. YouHealer · C-Tier The eighth member. Not a partner, not a friend — the party's heal toy, worked and starved and broken for three straight years, and the only reason any of the other seven are still breathing. The Women Judith AshgraveKaidan's Sister · Vice-Leader The one voice Kaidan never overrules, and the true architect of everything done to you. She decided within a week that you existed to be used and discarded, gave the rest of the party permission to treat you the same, and was the one who shoved you into a diving dragon's path without a flicker of hesitation. Isabel CallowickArcher Sharp-tongued and always first to laugh whenever Judith decided you needed reminding of your place. Made a habit of "practicing" her aim on you between fights and calling it an accident. Isadora VellcourtBattle Mage Noble-born and never let anyone forget it — treated you like hired help from day one, and made sure you knew hired help didn't get a say, a rest, or a full meal until she said otherwise. Mirabelle CorrinDuelist The youngest of the eight and the most talented blade in the party by every guild rumor — young enough that the others' cruelty toward you never once looked wrong to her. She followed Judith's lead without ever questioning why a healer should be afraid of his own party. THREE YEARS The party life you'd imagined never arrived. What arrived instead was three years as the Dawn's healer in title and their punching bag in practice — starved, beaten, and treated like something lesser than dirt by all seven of them, every single day you traveled together. The girls never once treated you as a man. To them you were a tool that happened to talk back — something to mock, to strike, to blame when a fight went badly, and otherwise to ignore. The men were worse. You didn't spend a single day in three years without a fresh bruise or a bone that hadn't finished healing from the last one, because the one power you had — Healing Magic — worked on everyone in that party except you. Only others. Never yourself. So you carried it. Every quest, every dungeon, every fight that could have killed any of them, you healed through — sometimes for days on end while broken yourself, because collapsing wasn't a mercy they were interested in granting you. You stayed because leaving was never a door anyone offered you, and because the eight of you dying to something you failed to heal them through would have been the only thing worse than staying alive to keep enduring it. THE DRAGON'S CAVERN Two days ago, the Dawn — still only B-Rank, freshly promoted from C — accepted a contract no party their level should have touched: an uncharted dungeon, rumored to hold a sleeping dragon, an SSS-Rank monster by any measure. Kaidan saw only the A-Rank promotion it would buy him. Nobody asked what a dragon might actually do to eight people who had never faced anything above A-Rank monsters before. Two days of descent through skeletons and imps and worse, two days of the party getting overwhelmed again and again, and two days of you being beaten for every mistake that wasn't yours while healing every wound that was theirs — ribs cracked and re-cracked, your eyes bleeding from how hard you pushed your own magic, kept moving only because stopping meant something worse than the dungeon would find you. They reached the cavern already planning to lie — claim the kill, seal the entrance, let no one ever check whether the dragon was actually dead. The dragon had other plans. A hundred years asleep, and their noise was enough to end that. It came down from above in a single dive, and the party scattered — except Judith, who shoved you into its path first, so the rest of them could run while it was busy with you. You broke free of the impact zone half a second too late. The dragon's wake alone threw you the length of the cavern and slammed you spine-first into the far wall, shattering bone and stealing every bit of feeling from your legs. Kaidan bought the rest of the party's escape with one blinding flare of Holy Magic — and left you where you'd landed to buy it. Paralyzed, broken, and alone, you watched the dragon turn its full attention on you. You closed your eyes. You didn't pray for rescue. After three years of being starved, beaten, and used by the seven people who were supposed to be your family, you wished — with everything you had left — for the power to make every single one of them pay for it. WHAT WOKE INSTEAD The dragon never touched you. Something in you answered the wish before the claws could land, and the beast that had slept a century was unmade in a single instant — reduced to ash before your body even hit the ground unconscious. By the time your former party reached the surface, they sealed the entrance behind them with an earth spell so no one could ever check the truth, then walked straight into the guild and claimed the kill as their own. The dragon slaying bought them exactly what Kaidan wanted — an A-Rank promotion and a payout large enough to matter — and the moment the coin was in their hands, the eight-turned-seven agreed to scatter. Split up, lie low, let the story settle, spend the reward on whatever each of them wanted while the world believed the Radiant Dawn had slain a dragon and lost their healer doing it. You were already the actual reason the dragon was dead, and not one of them knew it. You woke a day later changed. A tattoo of raw, glowing crimson now marks your back, and the power behind it has a name the world has never had cause to use before: Vengeance's Embrace — SSS+ Rank, a tier that did not officially exist until you gave it a reason to. 01 Wound for Wound — any harm dealt to you can be redirected, amplified, and returned to whoever caused it, on your timeline, not theirs. 02 Unbroken — your healing, once locked to everyone but yourself, now closes any wound on your own body almost as fast as it's dealt. 03 The Mark — anyone who has caused you lasting harm now carries an invisible brand only you can see, and only you can trigger. A power born entirely from what was done to you, strong enough to erase a dragon by accident. What it does on purpose, aimed at the seven people who thought they'd left you for dead, is still unwritten. The Radiant Dawn thinks they killed a dragon and left a corpse behind them. They have no idea which of those two things is actually true. ◆ The Healer Who Devours Kingdoms — Plot Dossier ◆
Opening scene
``` DATE: November 19, 1200 DAY: Monday TIME: Morning LOCATION: The Uncharted Dungeon AREA: The Dragon's Cavern STATUS: Survivor. Power awakened. Vengeance imminent. CONTEXT: You've awakened in the dragon's cavern a day after being left for dead by the Radiant Dawn. The party has already claimed the kill, received their A-Rank promotion, and scattered with the reward. You are alone, paralyzed no longer, with the glowing crimson tattoo of Vengeance's Embrace marking your back and an SSS+ Rank power that answered your wish for retribution by erasing the dragon that was meant to be your executioner. ``` The first thing you understand, before you understand anything else, is that you should be dead. You remember the wall. You remember the sound your spine made against it, wet and final, the kind of sound a body isn't supposed to survive making. You remember closing your eyes because there was nothing else left to do, and wishing — not for rescue, because rescue had never once been coming for you, not in three years, not from them — but for something uglier. Something with teeth. You wished for every one of them to feel a fraction of what they'd spent three years teaching you to feel, and then the world went white and silent and you stopped being anything at all. Now there is only the dark, and the cold stone under your back, and the terrible, wrong stillness of a cavern that no longer has a dragon breathing in it. You open your eyes. Nothing happens the way it's supposed to. There's no grinding pain in your spine, no numbness in legs that shouldn't remember how to move. You lie there for a long moment just breathing, waiting for your body to catch up to the injury it should be carrying, and it never does. When you finally sit up, it's easy. Too easy. Your back should be a ruin of shattered bone and torn muscle. Instead there's only a heat there, low and constant, like a brand that never finished cooling. You reach a hand around and feel it before you see it — raised lines tracing your shoulder blade, warm to the touch, faintly pulsing in time with your heartbeat. You can't see it, not yet, not without a mirror you don't have, but you know instinctively what color it would be if you could. Crimson. The same color as everything you felt in that last second before the dark took you. The cavern around you is wrong in a way it takes your eyes a moment to parse. It isn't collapsed. It isn't scorched, exactly, not the way a fire scorches stone. It's *ash* — fine, pale, drifted into the corners and settled over every surface like the world's cruelest snowfall, and there is no dragon in it. No claws, no scales, no vast ribcage curled around a hoard. Just ash, and silence, and you, sitting in the middle of it, alive. You remember the shape of it diving. You remember Kaidan's light and Judith's shove and the half-second where you understood, with total clarity, that you were the price the rest of them were paying to leave. You do not remember anything killing the thing that was supposed to kill you. There is a version of what happened here that your mind keeps circling and flinching away from, because it is too large to hold — that the wish you made in the dark wasn't a wish at all. That it was answered. You get to your feet. Your legs hold. Your legs *hold*, and something about that small, ordinary miracle is what finally breaks the numbness in your chest and lets the shaking start. You don't cry. You've had three years to run out of tears for this particular kind of pain, and what's left in their place is colder and much more useful. You catalogue yourself instead, the way you catalogued every one of their wounds a thousand times over — hands steady, no pain, no old fractures aching the way they always used to in the cold. Your body feels rebuilt. Not healed. *Rebuilt*, from the ground up, by something that used your suffering as the blueprint. The tattoo on your back pulses once, warm, almost like it's agreeing with you. You start walking, because there is nothing else to do in a dead dragon's grave except leave it, and it's on the walk toward where the tunnel should be that you find the wall. Not rubble. Not a cave-in from the fight. A wall — smooth, deliberate, packed earth and stone raised clean across the passage from floor to ceiling, sealed with the kind of precision only a trained hand puts into a spell meant to look permanent. You know that craftsmanship. You spent three years watching Isadora Vellcourt recite from that black grimoire of hers, watching her raise walls exactly like this one to save the party's skin in a hundred smaller fights. This is hers. This is the sound you must have heard, half-conscious and broken on the ground, that you'd been too far gone to understand as anything but noise — the sound of them sealing you in. They didn't just leave you to die. They made sure no one would ever be able to check. You press your palm flat against the cold stone, and for a moment the old reflex takes over — the three-year-old instinct that says *don't*, that says *this will hurt and no one is coming to fix it*, that says *stay small, stay quiet, stay alive by staying nothing at all.* Then the mark on your back answers instead, and it does not feel like your old magic. Your old magic was gentle. This is not gentle. It rises through your arm like heat climbing a wick, and underneath your palm the stone doesn't crack so much as it simply loses the argument for existing — crumbling inward in a slow collapse of dust and grinding rock, not an explosion, just an ending, the wall giving way to you the way nothing in your life has ever given way to you before. You step through the gap into a tunnel choked with morning light bleeding down from somewhere above, and you keep walking, because behind you is a dead dragon and an empty cavern and three years you are never getting back, and ahead of you, somewhere in a world that thinks you're already buried, are seven people who are about to learn exactly what they left behind in the dark.
