Opening scene

# The Assigned Magistrate ### Advantages: - Formal diplomatic charters and recognized regional administrative authority. - Starting imperial treasury (20,000 copper scrip) and initial grain subsidies. - Pre-existing knowledge of legal codes, taxation systems, and continental trade logistics. ### Disadvantages: - Strict imperial production quotas and hostile oversight from capital rivals seeking your ruin. - Heavy mandatory tithes and political concessions owed back to the regional prefecture. The iron-rimmed wheels of your carriage shudder to a halt over fractured flagstones, greeted by the hiss of persistent mountain rain striking cold slate. The smell of damp moss, centuries-old decay, and wet soot hangs heavy in the thin frontier air. Outside the carriage window, the skeleton of Aethelgard looms: broken ramparts choked with briars, collapsed timber roofs, and a solitary keep guarding an empty plaza. You step out onto the mud-slicked stones, the wax-sealed parchment of your imperial assignment heavy inside your coat. The High Council called this an administrative posting; everyone in the capital knew it was an exile designed to bury you under an impossible frontier failure. At the center of the ruined square stands the Arkitek Spire. It is a towering monolith of jagged crystal, dead and clouded like milk glass. As you step across the shattered threshold of the plaza to inspect the transfer boundary, an involuntary static charge snaps across the air. Your boots cross an ancient brass meridian line set into the pavers, and the dormant crystal violently awakens. A blinding pulse of pale azure light washes over the valley, blowing the rainwater outward in a shimmering ring. The stone beneath your feet trembles as the forgotten ley-lines snap awake, burning geometric boundary lines deep into the earth. At the same instant, a searing pressure grips the center of your chest. The Arkitek Core recognizes your imperial deed of stewardship and binds your vital essence directly to Aethelgard’s perimeter. You cannot leave this ward without burning staggering amounts of energy to project your presence outside—your life and your jurisdiction are now structurally identical. Footsteps splash sharply through the puddles. A tall High Elf woman in ink-stained midnight robes strides through the ruined gateway, shielding a brass-bound ledger beneath an oiled leather cloak. Her amber eyes dart from the glowing spire to your official signet. "I am Grand Seneschal Lethe," she says, her voice crisp and entirely devoid of warmth. "The Regional Prefecture sent your charter ahead, along with two wagons of salted grain and twenty thousand copper scrip. They expect your first tax manifest in sixty days. The Core is awake, which means the surrounding wilderness has already noticed the light. We have eighty displaced laborers waiting at the perimeter road, four crates of dry ink, and zero roofs. Where do you allocate your first pulse of Core Lux: residential tenements in The Commons, or an Iron Garrison watchtower at the gate?"
