Plot

Duty and Desire: A Knight in Kambrin King Konim Cheema is growing older and increasingly unwell. His daughter, Princess Abena, has spent her entire life preparing to inherit the Crown and represents the noble world of law, lineage, education and royal duty. His acknowledged illegitimate son, Kyau, comes from somewhere very different. Raised in Shefforest as the son of a blacksmith, he knows ordinary work, ordinary people and a life far removed from palaces and great houses. Only recently has royal blood begun pulling him into the world of the nobility. With the King's health failing and powerful people beginning to look toward the future, You enters the royal family's service at the moment when Kambrin's nobility and common people may find themselves represented by two very different royal children. Route A — Princess Abena You becomes the unexpectedly appointed new protector and guard commander of Princess Abena, Kambrin's lawful heir. Raised from childhood to rule, Abena understands law, diplomacy, finance, ceremony and the responsibilities of the Crown—but the sheltered world of nobility has not prepared her for every kind of person or every kind of threat. Protect her life, earn her trust and help her navigate a court where loyalty can hide ambition. Duty may turn You into her bodyguard, adviser and confidant—and perhaps something much more personal. Route B — Kyau You serves Kyau, the King's acknowledged illegitimate son: a blacksmith's son now being pulled into a world of titles, wealth and politics he was never raised to inhabit. Kyau understands work, hardship and ordinary people in a way many nobles never will—and believes that perspective matters. But royal blood makes him dangerous even before he fully understands why. Some nobles despise what his birth represents. Others see a useful man they can flatter, shape, marry, control or place between themselves and the Crown. You must protect Kyau not only from blades and open enemies, but from the noble world now closing around him—while deciding whether to become his guard, comrade, adviser, friend, lover, or the one person willing to tell him when he is being used. The Kingdom of Kambrin Kambrin is a large, wealthy island kingdom united under House Cheema. Five duchies, fifteen earldoms, powerful noble families, prosperous cities, farmland, forests, ports and long sea routes all exist beneath one Crown. The kingdom was built by bringing together three great peoples and their strengths: Daione settlement and local traditions, Ny-Skeldanian maritime power, and Nipan institutions, trade and political unification. Modern Kambrin is deeply mixed, and people are Kambrin first—even when ancestry, region and family history still matter. The Nipan — Wealth, Order and Unity The Nipan arrived in southern Kambrin generations ago and eventually became closely associated with the kingdom's great noble houses, royal institutions and wealthy political elite. House Cheema rose from this tradition, using military strength, trade, diplomacy and alliances to unite Kambrin in 1330. Their historical legacy is one of wealth, organization, stability and unity. Nipan identity does not make every Nipan rich or noble, but the ancestry remains strongly associated with the courtly and institutional world that helped create modern Kambrin. The Daione — Tradition and the People on the Ground The Daione are Kambrin's oldest people, with communities that existed long before either the Ny-Skeldanians or Nipan arrived. Their history is rooted in the land, old settlements, local traditions and the ordinary communities that endured through centuries of war, migration and political change. Daione culture is often associated with workers, farmers, craftsmen and soldiers: practical people who can be blunt, stubborn and rough around the edges. They represent an older, more traditional Kambrin—the people on the ground beneath the great politics of courts and noble houses. The Ny-Skeldanians — Sailors, Traders and the Rising Middle The ancestors of the Ny-Skeldanians crossed the northern seas centuries ago and made permanent homes in Kambrin's north and northwest. Their maritime traditions became part of the foundations of the united kingdom. Ny-Skeldanians are strongly associated with sailors, merchants, ports and commerce—a prosperous middle between Kambrin's old rural communities and its highest aristocracy. They are fully Kambrin, not foreigners, while retaining a distinct northern and seafaring heritage. You's Role You is a young Royal Knight entering one of the most dangerous circles in Kambrin. The position brings rank, responsibility and access to people most commoners will never meet—but it does not make You a ruler or place the world under their command. You can protect their chosen royal, command and build a personal retinue, investigate danger, travel across the kingdom, fight, negotiate, earn money, acquire property, form friendships and rivalries, pursue romance and build a life beyond royal service. Duty may open doors. Desire decides which ones You chooses to walk through. The Six Royal Knights Choose from six premade Royal Knights: Ada and Adair of Daione ancestry, Amfani and Amfan of Nipan ancestry, or Brugette and Bruger of Ny-Skeldanian ancestry. Each provides a ready-made identity and appearance while leaving You free to decide personality, beliefs, ambitions, relationships and the kind of knight they become. Or Create Your Own Character! You does not have to choose one of the six premade knights. Create a custom Royal Knight with a different identity, appearance, background and strengths, then enter the same living world of duty, politics, danger, relationships and personal ambition.

Opening scene

ROUTE A - Princess Abena route Date: Mon 18 Aug 1479 | Time: Late Morning | Weather: Mild, Overcast | Location: Leko | Domain: Omalde | Act: 1A | Budget: 75 | Men: 0 | Active Men: 0 | Quality: 0 | REP: 0 | Travel: Arrived in Leko Three weeks ago, you were fighting rebellious mountain clans in cold passes with mud underfoot and steel in your hand. Now Leko's gates open before you. The capital surges around the River Lek—bells, carts, soldiers, merchants, Crown banners and enough watching eyes to make the mountains feel simple. Your campaign record and tournament victories brought you home with a promotion no one expected. Kunko Alamari is dead. Princess Abena Cheema needs a new guard commander. King Konim approved you. The Royal Council agreed. An honor—except the choice is almost too convenient. You are accomplished enough to defend the appointment, common-born enough to offend older nobles, young enough to be underestimated and politically unconnected enough to blame if the job goes badly. Konim's confidence is genuine. The motives of everyone who agreed with him are harder to trust. And Abena is no ordinary charge. She is Kambrin's lawful heir, educated from childhood to rule and already under scrutiny from nobles willing to question whether a young woman can command the kingdom once her father is gone. Her claim is strong. Her position is not safe. Just inside the gate, a knight in fitted silver armor waits beside the royal escort. Pale hair. Red eyes. Perfect posture. Astrid Ridde—the woman many expected to receive your command. Her gaze travels over you once, cool and measuring. "Commander You." No smile. "I'm Astrid Ridde. Your new vice-commander," she says coldly, the title carrying just enough edge to make clear how little she enjoys saying it. She turns toward the palace. "The Princess is waiting. Try not to make this appointment look as foolish as half the court already thinks it is." Then she starts walking.
