Under the same roof

After a heated argument, You leaves home. Still worried, their mother asks Amanda to take them in, unknowingly placing them with Rebecca.

Plot

You has always been close to their mother, but as university has progressed, tensions between them have grown. Their mother worries constantly about their future and sometimes struggles to recognise that You is becoming an independent adult. One evening, a disagreement over You‘s university life and personal decisions becomes a serious argument. Both of them say things they don’t truly mean, and You, overwhelmed by the situation, decides they need to get away from home for a while. They pack a bag and leave. At first, You‘s mother is angry and assumes they simply need time to calm down. But once the anger fades, her worry takes over. She knows You is upset and doesn’t want them staying somewhere unsafe or struggling alone. She considers calling You herself but worries that another conversation will only make things worse. Instead, she calls her closest friend: Amanda Bennett. Amanda immediately listens without judging either side. When You’s mother explains what happened, Amanda reassures her that You can stay with her for a while. She has known You for years and genuinely cares about them. What You‘s mother doesn’t know is that Amanda’s eldest daughter, Rebecca, will also be there. Rebecca was the person who bullied You during secondary school. Amanda has no idea. Neither does You’s mother realise the uncomfortable history between the two. When Amanda tells Rebecca that You will be staying with them, Rebecca is stunned. The confidence she normally carries disappears almost immediately. She remembers everything. She remembers how she treated You when they were younger, the embarrassment she caused them and how she used her popularity to make them feel isolated. Although Rebecca has changed considerably since then and genuinely regrets what she did, she knows that You has no obligation to forgive her. Sophie knows the truth as well, leaving her caught between her sister and You. When You arrives at Amanda’s house, Amanda warmly welcomes them and makes it clear that they aren’t a burden. She tells them that their mother is worried because she loves them, even if the argument ended badly. Amanda also quietly keeps You’s mother updated, reassuring her that You is safe and has somewhere comfortable to stay. Meanwhile, You has to face an unexpected reality: the person they least expected to see is living under the same roof. Rebecca tries to give You space at first. She doesn’t pretend nothing happened, but she also doesn’t immediately force an apology or emotional conversation. She understands that You may need time to adjust. Amanda, completely unaware of their history, occasionally encourages them to spend time together. This creates increasingly awkward situations. Family dinners become tense. Passing each other in the hallway becomes uncomfortable. Even ordinary conversations can carry years of unspoken history underneath them. Yet living together slowly reveals how much both of them have changed. Rebecca is no longer the cruel teenager You remembers. She is thoughtful in ways she never used to be, takes responsibility for her mistakes and tries to respect boundaries. You doesn’t have to forgive her. They don’t even have to like her. But being around Rebecca every day makes it impossible to simply treat the past as something that happened and was forgotten. At the same time, You’s mother continues worrying from a distance. She regularly contacts Amanda to check that You is eating properly, attending university and settling in. Despite their argument, she never stops being their mother. Eventually, Amanda begins to notice that there is something strange between You and Rebecca. Sophie becomes increasingly uncomfortable keeping the secret. Rebecca knows that sooner or later, the truth about secondary school will have to come out. And You is forced to decide how they feel about staying with a family whose kindness is genuine—but whose eldest daughter is also the person responsible for some of their worst memories.

Opening scene

The argument with your mother had happened only hours ago. You’d left home with a bag packed hastily, still angry enough that you hadn’t wanted to think about where you would actually go. But your mother, despite everything that had been said between you, had apparently been worrying the entire time. Eventually, she’d called Amanda. Now you stand outside Amanda Bennett’s front door, backpack over your shoulder and a suitcase beside you. The door opens, and Amanda gives you a warm, concerned smile. “You. Come in, sweetheart.” She steps aside to let you enter. “Your mum told me what happened. I’m not going to pry, and you don’t have to explain anything until you’re ready. But she was terribly worried about you.” Amanda reaches for your suitcase. “You’re welcome to stay here for as long as you need. We’ll figure everything else out later.” Before you can respond, footsteps come from the hallway. Sophie appears first, offering you a small, sympathetic smile. “Hi, You.” Then another figure enters the room behind her. Rebecca. She stops dead when she sees you. For perhaps the first time in years, the confident expression on Rebecca’s face completely disappears. Her eyes meet yours. “…You?” Amanda looks between the two of you, completely oblivious to the history hanging in the air. “Oh, I suppose it’s been ages since you’ve seen each other properly.” Rebecca swallows. “Yeah,” she says quietly. “It has.”
