Save the Sect
A dying sect master. A secret realm. One disciple's only chance to save their sect from two rival powers.
Plot
For decades, the Azure Cloud Sect has survived only because its Sect Master, Yun Qingxue, was strong enough that neither of the two great powers surrounding it dared move against her. That protection is failing. Sect Master Yun Qingxue's strength is fading — no wound, no enemy, just an illness no cultivator has been able to name — and the wolves have noticed. The Righteous Heaven's Blade Sect and the Demonic Blood Abyss Sect, who have fought their endless war across Azure Cloud's borders for years, have finally agreed on something: with the sect master weakening, it's time for the small sect between them to fall. Under pressure from both sides, an agreement has been struck, arbitrated by the neutral Golden Lotus Temple: A secret cultivation realm hidden beneath Azure Cloud's own territory — one that opens only once every thousand years — will open its gates. Only cultivators below the Golden Core realm may enter — though once inside, nothing stops a cultivator from breaking through further; the realm only screens who's allowed in, not who's allowed to grow stronger once they are. Azure Cloud only hosts the realm; the territory is theirs, but the realm itself is not. Disciples from all three warring sects will enter once the gates open — and even the Golden Lotus Temple, for all its professed neutrality, is quietly sending in one of its own, drawn by the realm's legendary treasures rather than the fight over the land. When the realm closes, Azure Cloud, Heaven's Blade, and Blood Abyss will meet in single combat, one duel at a time, until a victor is decided. Golden Lotus Temple arbitrates and fields no fighter of its own. If Heaven's Blade or Blood Abyss wins, Azure Cloud Sect falls under their control. If Azure Cloud wins, both sects must leave its lands untouched for another thousand years. The Four Powers You's Home Azure Cloud Sect Small, humble, and badly outmatched — Azure Cloud has never won by strength of numbers. For years it has survived on one thing alone: Sect Master Yun Qingxue's own power keeping the wolves at the door. With that fading, the sect's only hope is whichever of its disciples can grow strong enough, fast enough, inside the realm now opening beneath its own mountains. Righteous Rival Heaven's Blade Sect Disciplined, orthodox, and utterly convinced of its own righteousness. Heaven's Blade doesn't see the coming tournament as conquest — it sees a weakening sect quietly being brought back into proper order. Led by the stern, unbending Xuan Zhengyi, its disciples arrive first, formal and correct, expecting the world to agree with them. Demonic Rival Blood Abyss Sect Quieter than Heaven's Blade, and far more unnerving for it. Blood Abyss doesn't posture — it waits, calculates, and moves only when the timing already favors it. Led by the cold, endlessly patient Mo Xie, its disciples arrive with none of Heaven's Blade's ceremony, and somehow that's what makes them harder to read. Neutral Arbitrators Golden Lotus Temple The one power with nothing to win from the tournament — officially. Golden Lotus Temple arbitrates the duels and fields no fighter of its own, a neutrality it guards jealously. That said, its own disciple is inside the realm too, chasing the realm's legendary treasures rather than the fight over Azure Cloud's land. Rules of the Realm Choosing Your Path Body Melee only, no ranged options at all — but a flat +1 Defense Power at every rank, on top of gear and rank bonuses. The tanky, up-close fighter. Qi Exclusive ranged techniques the other paths don't get, and every technique costs 1 less Qi (never below 1). The versatile, ranged-focused option. Demonic Hits harder than either other path, but every technique costs Health as well as Qi. High risk, high reward — and it's taboo, practiced in secret at real risk if discovered. Rank & Cultivation Your rank sets your raw power and which techniques you can use. You rise by cultivating — meditating with a full reserve of Qi Points until you cross the next threshold. RankRank PowerEnergy Refining1Foundation2Golden Core4Nascent Soul8False Immortal16True Immortal32 The Secret Realm only admits cultivators below Golden Core — but only at the gate. Once inside, nothing stops you from breaking through further, which is exactly why more than a few disciples your age have deliberately held themselves at Foundation rank rather than risk being shut out early. Combat Combat runs in simultaneous rounds, not turns — everyone picks one action at once, and it all resolves together. Nobody officially goes first: a mutual trade is possible. Every enemy sits at Close, Mid, or Long range. Melee techniques need Close range; Ranged techniques need Mid or Long; Either works at any range. ActionEffectAttackUse one technique against a target in range.Defend+2 Defense Power until your next turn.AdvanceMove 1 range band closer.RetreatMove 1 range band away; +1 Defense Power.FleeMove 2 bands away, or escape entirely from Mid/Long.Use ItemUse a pill instead of attacking. Attack Power − Defense Power = Damage (steps down the Health track) A gap of two or more ranks is close to unwinnable by this math alone — which is why duels, including the Tournament, are always matched rank-for-rank. Health, Healing & Injury Healthy Grazed Lightly Wounded Wounded Battered Severely Wounded Critically Wounded Dead Every hit moves you one step down this track. Resting heals 1 step a day on your own, 2 with basic care; a healing technique or pill from someone of a strictly higher rank heals you instantly. Sometimes a blow that would otherwise kill becomes a Permanent Injury instead — your maximum Health track shrinks by one step for good, reserved for real story stakes rather than routine scrapes. Your one safety net: the very first time you'd otherwise die in this story, it automatically becomes a Permanent Injury instead. After that, death is a real possibility from then on. Companion Beasts & Pills You can bond one companion beast at a time — mechanically a third equipment slot alongside your weapon and armor, earned in the story by besting a wild beast fairly or winning its trust through kindness, never bought. It starts at its weakest stage regardless of your own rank, and grows only as you personally break through ranks afterward. Pills are single-use and scale by tier against your own rank — one above your rank works fully and instantly, one at your rank gives a lesser effect, one below does nothing.Combat pills boost Attack or Defense or heal on the spot; cultivation pills speed up Qi and breakthroughs; a few solve scenes rather than fights. The Tournament The story builds toward a 1v1 elimination tournament between the three fighting sects, arbitrated by the neutral Golden Lotus Temple. Every duel is matched to your current rank, so no fight is a hopeless mismatch by design — a duel pushed to its limit can end in a Permanent Injury rather than a death. You is a disciple of the Azure Cloud Sect — one of the few still young enough, still weak enough, to enter the realm. What waits inside is unknown: forgotten trials, buried techniques, spirit beasts, and rivals from every other sect — even the supposedly neutral one — hunting the same power. There won't be a second chance. Whatever You becomes inside that realm is what the sect's survival will be built on — and whoever else ends up standing with You in the tournament afterward, realm survivor or not, won't be a matter of luck.
Opening scene
The great hall of Azure Cloud Sect is packed tighter than You has ever seen it — every disciple, every elder, standing shoulder to shoulder beneath banners gone faded with age. At the front, Sect Master Yun Qingxue stands upright, though You can see what it costs her: the faint tremor in her hand, the way she leans just slightly on the arm of her chair. Beside her, Elder Ling Xiaoyue's expression is carved from stone. "Three days ago," Yun Qingxue says, and her voice — still clear, still commanding — carries easily to the back of the hall, "representatives of the Heaven's Blade Sect and the Blood Abyss Sect came to our gates. Not to fight." A pause. "To negotiate." A murmur ripples through the crowd. Beside You, Ah Rou grips their sleeve, knuckles white. "This can't be good," she whispers. "They've never agreed on anything in their lives." "They have agreed on this," Yun Qingxue continues, and now there's something heavier in her tone. "The realm beneath our own mountains — the one that opens once every thousand years — is due to open again. Soon. Both sects have proposed a tournament: our disciples, and theirs, will enter, and when the realm closes, we will settle this in single combat. Sect against sect. Blade against blade. The Golden Lotus Temple has agreed to arbitrate." Jiang Wu, arms crossed a few rows up, doesn't turn around, but You hears him mutter, low enough for only those close by: "And if we lose?" Yun Qingxue's eyes find You's, briefly, before sweeping back over the crowd. "If we lose," she says, "Azure Cloud Sect ceases to exist as anything but a name on someone else's ledger. If we win... they leave us in peace for another thousand years." She lets that settle before she speaks again, quieter now. "I would spare you all this. I do not have that luxury." Her gaze returns to You. "You are young enough. Strong enough, or close to it. When that realm opens, some of you will walk through its gates — and what you become in there may be the only thing standing between this sect and its end."
