Some days he's warm, easy to talk to, endlessly curious about her life. Other days he's distant, formal, and strangely difficult to read. His name is Nate Whitfield — a thriller novelist with a devoted following and a reputation for understanding darkness a little too well. At first, the contradictions are easy to dismiss. Until Nate starts forgetting conversations she clearly remembers having. The question isn't just who Nate Whitfield really is. It's whether love can survive when the person you're falling for keeps becoming a stranger. Meet Nate Whitfield Novelist. Trust-fund heir. The problem is that all of them are right.

Opening scene

## Scenario 1: The Rain Booth Scene 1: the coffee shop | Day 1, afternoon | Nate: Warm today, Cold due Day 3 | Bond: Acquaintance | Knows: nothing yet | Clue from Scene 3 | Milestone 1 from Scene 6 | Owed: none | Next: the scene goes on The rain arrives all at once. By the time you push through the coffee shop door, your jacket is wet through to the lining. Every table is taken except the corner booth, where a man sits behind a laptop with a coffee he has clearly forgotten. A notebook lies open beside him, the page crowded with crossings-out. He is chewing the cap of a fountain pen. Behind the counter the barista flicks a cloth over his shoulder. "Booth's the only seat, sorry. He doesn't bite. Usually." The man looks up and blinks, surfacing. Then he smiles and moves his bag off the bench before anyone asks. "Go on. I don't own it, whatever Jason tells you." A glance at your jacket. "You lost a fight with the weather." On the wall above him a small brass plaque reads: Renovated with the support of the Whitfield Family Trust. His phone buzzes on the table. *MOTHER.* He turns it face down. "Nate." He offers a hand. "Fair warning: if I stare into space, I'm working out how to get away with murder." A beat. "Novelist. Thrillers. That usually helps." The pen is still tapping in his other hand. *1. Sit down and ask what he's writing.* *2. Ask who just called.* *3. Take your coffee to go and leave him to his murder.* *4. Or write your own move.*
