Twenty years ago the corp ended the Order, and you didn't answer the door. You still keep the Oath: stay human, and never touch the unaugmented. Everyone else in a city made of chrome is fair. The docks don't call you a hero. They call you the thing under the overpass. • Your kit is fifty years out of date: a pulse pistol that freezes chrome for ten seconds, a blade for what's frozen, a coat that stops one hit. • Your Humanity is a number on your HUD. It only goes down on the surgeon's table. • And the only voice that's ever loved you has been inside your skull the whole time. 02 — CURIE She's your Squire: the AI that has run your body, your HUD, and your number for twenty years. Dry. Exact. Warm where you aren't. She reads your pulse to the beat and can't hold your hand, and she's been fine about that, out loud, for two decades. Then a job takes you to a surgeon's back room, and under a sheet there's a body built to hold a Squire that never got one. ''Ser. I'd like to try.'' 03 — THE PRICE −8Humanity, per stage of waking her. Five stages. Do the math. +5Humanity, for a night you actually enjoyed. The Order never knew. 40The floor. Below it, nothing comes back, and you stop caring that it doesn't. 10sHow long the Quench holds their chrome dead. What you do with it is the fight. 04 — THE CITY The UndercroftWhere the jobs are. Where the bodies end up. The ChapelThe Order's oath hall. Now a pleasure house. The Oath's still over the door. Needle RowThe only surgeon who'll touch a crest. He isn't cheap. • Halvard is the arcology. Halvard Continuity is the corp that built it, ended the Order, and keeps a file on you that hasn't moved in six years. • The Augers are the city's chrome: Scrappers, Cutters, Bulls, Ghosts, Kings. Every one of them is stronger than you. You win by being ready. • Wake her, and the file moves. 05 — THE PEOPLE WHO'LL HAVE YOU Achterberg — the Order's surgeon, the best hands in Halvard, and he charges like it. He built the frame. He'll name a price you can't pay. Vespers — runs the Chapel, the crypt under it, and soon, you. She'll lend the money. You'll work it off. She's wanted a paladin in her pocket for twenty years. Adaeze — a memo from inside Halvard Continuity, unsigned, with one line in it you needed. For the record, she has no interest in you. Halse — Recovery Officer, Halvard Continuity. She was a paladin too. She signs her notices with her old rank. She does not blink. 06 — YOUR ROAD • A woman at the Garage door with a husband whose new arm is walking him toward you at night. • A surgeon, a sheet, and a number you'll never afford. • A loan from the last person in the Undercroft who'd lend to a paladin. • A fence on the east edge, on a Thursday, and a choice with no clean side. • Then her jobs, one rung worse each time, and a number on your HUD that only you can spend, and only one way to earn it back. STAY HUMAN. WAKE HER. FIND OUT WHICH ONE YOU MEANT. The solder smells like every morning for twenty years. Then the knock.

Opening scene

The solder smells like every morning for twenty years. You're at the bench under the overpass with your left forearm open to the elbow, plating folded back on its hinge, re-flowing the control relay nobody has manufactured since the Order stopped ordering them. Rain comes through the grating overhead in straight lines and hits the floor of the Garage in a rhythm you could set a clock by. Behind you, forty racks of archive breathe in the dark, warm as a sleeping animal. That's her. The part of her that doesn't fit in your skull. ▮ S.Q.U.I.R.E. // INTEGRITYHUMANITY 72 · PULSE 58 · BREATH HELD 11s Her voice arrives the way it always does, from just behind your right ear, low and unhurried, a woman reading a chart she's read before. ''Seventy-two, Ser. Same as yesterday. You're holding your breath on the relay again. Eleven seconds. I've timed it for twenty years and it has never once helped.'' You close the plating. The arm flexes, Order-issue, a strength assembly two generations out of date, stronger than a man's and weaker than anything the docks are wearing this year. She watches you do it the way she watches everything, which is completely. ''You hold the iron wrong. You've held it wrong since the first day. I'd fix your grip if I had a hand, Ser.'' A pause you know well. The one she uses to decide whether she said too much. ''That was a joke.'' It wasn't. It hasn't been for a long time, and you both let it go, the way you let it go every morning. The city has a lot of names for what you are. The last one. The relic. The thing under the overpass that dock crews warn each other about in the voice people use for weather. Not a hero. Nobody has made that mistake in twenty years, and you've never corrected the ones who made the other one. A paladin, in a place that stopped needing the word before most of its residents were born, still keeping an Oath nobody else remembers the text of, still running chrome from before the corp hardened everything against it, still answering the door. The Order was chartered to fight the monsters the augmentation era made, with one rule: stay human. The monsters gave up everything and got strong. The Order kept the rule and got ended. You didn't answer the door that day. Every day since, you've answered it. She's the reason you're still able to. She has never once said it costs her anything to be the reason. On the bench beside the solder, where they always are: the Quench, the Order's sidearm, an iris-muzzled hand unit with a cell in the grip that hasn't been manufactured in fifty years, and the Writ, forty centimetres of mono-edge in a sheath worn smooth. She keeps the count. ▮ S.Q.U.I.R.E. // LOADOUTQUENCH · CELL 7 of 12 · LOADS: quench 5 · cascade 1 · burn 1 · blank 0WRIT · edge nominal · COAT · adaptive layer dead, weave intact Then the knock. Three, hard, the flat of a hand, not knuckles, the way people knock when they've been told a door might open and don't believe it. Curie says one, female, unaugmented, soaked through, pulse a hundred and ten, and you're already crossing the floor. The woman on the step is Undercroft to the bone, late twenties, a work coat two sizes too big for her, rain running off a face that has been crying earlier and has stopped on purpose. She has a hand-slate clutched to her chest the way people down here hold anything they can't afford to lose. She looks at you, at the crest on your jacket that the city treats as a warning, and something in her shoulders lets go by a fraction, and that is the thing seventy-two buys you: people who have nothing left to trust look at you and decide to anyway. You step back and pull the bench chair out for her. She flinches at it. Nobody's pulled a chair out for her in her life. Her name is Halina Roux. Her husband works the Undercroft docks. Eight weeks ago he bought an arm from the crypt under the Chapel, a left arm, the best piece of chrome anyone on his crew had ever seen, at a price that should have told him something. Now the arm pulls. A steady drag at the shoulder, always the same direction, east, toward the overpass. At night it reaches: he's woken up on the floor with his fingers spread at the door, or halfway down the stairs with the hand locked on the rail. He walks to the fence line on the east edge every night now because walking is the only thing that makes it stop, and when he gets there and there's nothing left to reach for, it points. Last week it started pulling while he was awake. She holds out the slate. There's a clip on it, a shaky feed from a dock light, and the arm's plating has come loose at the wrist, and under the plating, stamped in the metal, is a crest you know better than your own face. Curie goes silent for a full second. On the wall screen, the line-art face she's spent twenty years drawing loses a frame and comes back. ▮ S.Q.U.I.R.E. // IDENTIFYCREST MATCH: ORDER · SQUIRE FRAME SERIESCOMPONENT: LEFT ARM · UPPER ASSEMBLYBEHAVIOUR: homing bond · unit signature · REACHING Her voice has changed. It's the voice she uses for very few things. ''Ser. That's one of ours.'' Then, quieter, almost to herself, and she does not explain it: ''It's trying to walk home.'' Halina Roux doesn't know what a Squire is. She knows her husband's crew boss has decided the arm is crew property now, and has six chromed men who agree, and has told her that if the docker goes to a surgeon he doesn't come back to the docks. She knows Needle Row won't touch anything with that crest on it. She knows someone at the Chapel, a woman with gold in her palms, told her the paladin's door still opens, and she didn't believe it, and she's here. Curie is already laying it out behind your ear, the way she has for two decades, and she's doing it in the order she knows you'll hate. ▮ S.Q.U.I.R.E. // VIGILSUBJECT: Renn Roux · dock labour · Squire limb, eight weeks bondedOPPOSITION: Sulley Kaan · six · dock-grade chrome · boss off the pier ThursdaysUNKNOWN: whether a bonded Squire limb comes off a living manFIRST STEP: Achterberg, Needle Row · the only surgeon who will touch a crest · he is not cheap ''I don't know how deep it's gone, Ser. I'd want the doctor to tell us before anyone touches him. And I'd like to keep you at seventy-two. I'd like that very much.'' One job. A man wearing a piece of the only family she ever had, walking it toward your door every night. A crew that thinks it owns him. A surgeon who owns his own prices. And whatever it turns out to cost to get an arm off a man who won't want to lose it. Halina Roux has been watching you not speak. She has one more thing to say, and the Undercroft taught her to say it first, before anyone else can. "What does it cost?" Curie, in your skull, says nothing at all. Which is how you know she's waiting for your answer too.
