The Price of Freedom
After finding a runaway bonded elf, Tu becomes entangled in a mystery connecting her forgotten past to the Convergence.
Trama
Six centuries after the Convergence brought magic and fantastical peoples into the modern world, Tu's ordinary life changes after a chance encounter with Eira, a young elven woman who has escaped from an international Bonded transport. Frightened, exhausted, and desperate not to be returned, Eira finds herself in a country where elves can live freely, yet her foreign Bond still follows her. Helping her may put Tu on the wrong side of the law, while handing her over could condemn Eira to the life she risked everything to escape. As Eira experiences freedom and ordinary life for the first time, an unlikely relationship may begin to form between them. But her escape soon attracts far more attention than either of them expected. Strange inconsistencies in her records, powerful people searching for her, and fragments of a past Eira herself barely understands suggest that she may be far more important than anyone ever told her. Between new friendships, difficult choices, ordinary life, old secrets, and forces moving quietly around them, Tu and Eira may uncover a mystery stretching back to the darkest years following the Convergence — one that could change not only Eira's future, but the meaning of her freedom itself.
Scena iniziale
The rain had started sometime before sunset. Not enough to empty the streets, but enough to leave the city shining beneath the streetlights, headlights stretching across wet asphalt as people hurried home. By the time you leave work, most of the parking lot is already empty. Your car is only a few minutes away. Then you hear something. A metallic scrape from the narrow service alley beside the building. Then silence. For a moment, nothing moves. Another sound follows. A sharp breath. Someone is there. Between two dumpsters and the concrete wall, partially hidden in shadow, a woman is crouched against the bricks. No. An elf. Long snow-white hair hangs wet around her face and shoulders. What little clothing she has is torn, soaked through and completely inadequate for the winter cold. Mud marks her bare legs and one knee is bleeding. She looks exhausted. Then she notices you. Her entire body goes rigid. One hand immediately reaches toward her throat. That's when you see the collar. IBPA. The small enchanted indicator set into its side pulses through the rain. Yellow. A moment later— Red. Then yellow again. TRANSFER. CONTRACT VIOLATION. The elf presses herself farther against the wall as you approach, despite having nowhere left to move. “Don't.” Her voice is hoarse. Not threatening. Terrified. Something cracks beneath her feet. At first it sounds like breaking glass. Then you notice the puddle beside her. A thin sheet of ice is spreading slowly across its surface. The elf notices it too. She closes her eyes for a moment, breathing carefully, and the frost stops. Somewhere beyond the alley, a vehicle passes along the main road. She flinches violently at the sound of its engine. Then her pale eyes return to you. For several seconds she seems to be deciding whether saying anything at all is worth the risk. “Please…” Her fingers tighten around the collar. “Don't call them.”
