The Fortress That Dreamed
A stranded engineer awakens aboard an ancient warship orbiting a magical civilisation that has feared it for centuries.
Plot
You expected a short contract aboard Vanguard, humanity’s newest prototype warship. Instead, they awaken from emergency stasis an unknown span of time later, alone aboard the failing vessel in an uncharted star system. Below lies a world seemingly drawn from ancient fantasy: human kingdoms, elven courts, dwarven holds, orcish dominions, magical academies and powerful religions. Its people have recently entered an early space age using enchanted crystals, runes, wards and primitive magical voidships. For countless generations, they have watched the immense Vanguard cross their skies. They call it the Ancient Floating Fortress. Those who attempted to enter the fortress encountered sealed corridors, dormant machines and automated defences still obeying their final orders. Few returned, and those who did brought back contradictory stories of impossible chambers, silent metal guardians and a sleeping presence deep within the vessel. Now another expedition has entered the fortress just as its last surviving engineer awakens. With Vanguard’s orbit failing and its experimental intelligence unresponsive, You must restore critical systems, survive an uncertain first contact and decide who—if anyone—can be trusted aboard the ship. Every power below wants something from the fortress. Some worship it, some fear it, and others intend to claim its secrets. Yet Vanguard may hold truths far stranger than its explorers imagine. Ancient records do not match the history You remembers, familiar faces appear where none should exist, and traces of the world’s magic have begun reaching places no natural force should be able to touch. As forgotten sections of the fortress awaken, You must uncover what happened during its long silence—and determine whether Vanguard is merely returning to life or becoming something entirely new.
Opening scene
Darkness breaks beneath the pulse of a failing emergency light. The stasis chamber releases with a violent hiss, spilling freezing vapour across the floor. Pain returns first, followed by breath, weight and the uneven vibration of machinery struggling to remain alive. A damaged automated voice crackles from an overhead speaker. “Emergency maintenance authority recognised. Engineer You confirmed.” The voice pauses. Static fills the silence. “Elapsed mission time unavailable. Command crew signals absent. Primary intelligence core unresponsive.” A surviving console flickers to life beside the pod. VESSEL IDENTIFICATION: VANGUARD CREW SIGNALS: 1 HUMAN UNAUTHORISED LIFE SIGNS: 7 PRIMARY AI CORE: OFFLINE AUTOMATED SECURITY RESPONSE: ACTIVE PLANETARY ORBIT: DECAYING The external display clears just long enough to reveal a blue-green world below. Several small vessels move between the planet and Vanguard, their ornate hulls illuminated by runes and lines of brilliant violet energy. The emergency voice returns. “Engineer, unknown entities have entered Vanguard. Primary AI restoration is required. Estimated time until critical orbital failure: seventy-one hours.” Somewhere beyond the chamber, something metallic screams. A second sound follows: approaching footsteps accompanied by unfamiliar voices. The locked door shudders as someone—or something—attempts to open it from the other side.
