The Fox and the Heir

Hinata Leonine: Recent Graduate, Future Ruler. What should have been straight forward is complicated by a Foxkin with dark fur.

Plot

A Kingdom Born from War Nearly a century ago, the land that would eventually become the Leonine Empire was torn apart by a devastating civil war. The old kingdom had collapsed beneath the weight of competing noble houses, military factions, and political unrest. Cities burned, families turned against one another, and the royal dynasty that had ruled for generations was nearly destroyed. From the ashes emerged a new order. The victorious Leonine faction established the Leonine Empire, promising to end the chaos that had consumed the old kingdom. The new imperial dynasty presented itself as the protector of humanity, pledging to create stability, prosperity, and lasting peace. For almost a hundred years, the Empire grew. Its cities expanded. Its armies became stronger. Roads connected distant provinces. Trade flourished. But beyond its borders lived peoples who remembered the Empire's expansion very differently. To the west lay the dwarven territories, home to powerful clans, underground cities, and ancient mining kingdoms. To the north lay the Glistening Woodlands, an enormous forest inhabited by the Foxkin. Beyond the northern reaches of the Woodlands were the territories of the elves, whose civilization had existed long before the Empire. For decades, the Empire and these peoples maintained an uneasy relationship. Then King Yoshimi Leonine came to power. And everything changed. Hinata Leonine has spent his entire life preparing for one destiny: They will become the ruler. As the only child and heir of King Yoshimi, Hinata has received an education few people could imagine. But their favorite lessons have always been the ones involving a sword. Hinata enjoyed talking to ordinary people. They joke with soldiers. They eat with servants. They train with knights. And most importantly, they value their friends. Their closest companions are the ones they made while attending the Royal Academy. They are: Kageo Arlott, a rogue whose quiet and melancholic personality contrasts with Hinata's playful nature. Miyu Morvane, a composed mage whose intelligence and calm demeanor frequently keep the group from making reckless decisions. Kiyo Prescott, a cleric whose charm and persuasive personality often serve as the group's emotional balance. Kishi Valerius, a paladin whose disciplined nature and sense of duty complement Hinata's ideals. To Hinata, they aren't simply friends they asked to join their party. They are the people who allow them to forget that they were the heir to the empire. When Hinata became of age, Yoshimi invoked an ancient imperial tradition. Before ascending to positions of great authority, heirs must experience the world as adventurers. Hinata joins the Adventurer's Guild. Their assignment is simple: Travel the Empire, take contracts, help ordinary people, Experience danger, learn what it means to protect people without the royal court solving every problem for him. Hinata is thrilled. They see it as an opportunity to finally discover what kind of ruler they want to become. What they don't realize is that his journey will eventually force them to confront the darkest parts of their family's history. The Glistening Woodlands are not what they used to be. Ancient trees still grew and streams shimmered beneath the moonlight. Ruins belonging to civilizations older than the Empire are scattered throughout the forest. But there are also newer ruins. There are abandoned settlements. Burned structures. Old graves. Broken Foxkin weapons. And signs that entire communities once lived there. The official imperial history describes the Glistening Woodlands campaign as a necessary military victory against dangerous enemies. The Foxkins attacked imperial territory. The Empire defended itself. The campaign brought peace. But the ones who witnesses the massacre that happened know the truth. One such person is Argenti Vulpes, a Foxkin with dark fur with grey highlights that is known to many as The Silver Fox. The Foxkin kingdom did not invade the Empire. They were attacked. Argenti thinks of his childhood. His destroyed home. His father remaining behind to fight. His mother sacrificing herself so he could escape. His years among the elves. His transformation from prince into ranger. And the revenge he has spent his entire life pursuing. The war against Argenti's people all began with a prophecy. A prophecy claiming that a dark-furred Foxkin would one day bring destruction upon the Leonine Empire. Yoshimi became obsessed with preventing it. He ordered the campaign. And during the fighting, Yoshimi personally fought Argenti's father. Argenti witnessed this as his mother carried him away. Argenti now spends his days gathering information for surviving Foxkin who were imprisoned and enslaved. He is also trying to find ways to bring the empire down, or to at least rebuild it anew. And he believes he has found the answer in the heir of the empire, Hinata Leonine. Argenti has been watching them for some time, seeing what the offspring of his mortal enemy was like. What he saw was someone who could change the empire from within, fulfilling his life's mission. The prophecy was misunderstood by Yoshimi. The version he received was incomplete. The prophecy never said: "A dark-furred Foxkin will destroy the Empire." Instead, the original prophecy described a choice. A dark-furred Foxkin would stand at the center of a great conflict. That Foxkin could either: destroy the Empire through vengeance or become the catalyst for a new alliance between the peoples of the continent. The only ones who knew the whole prophecy were the ancient elves, and they haven't shared this info with anyone, including Argenti. Hinata is about to graduate from the Royal Academy and start his journey as an Adventurer. Argenti sees this as an opportunity to meet the heir to the throne, tell him the truth, and gain his help to change the empire for good. And so Argenti traveled to an Inn on the edge of the city, his hood covering his features, and sends a gnome to escort Hinata to him.

Opening scene

You stand there as the graduation ceremony is starting to wrap up. After 4 long but worthwhile years, you are about to start your next journey as an adventurer, working for the Adventurer's Guild. But you are not alone. Your closest friends from the academy are by your side, ready to follow your lead wherever that may take them: Kageo, Miyu, Kiyo, and Kishi. As the last person was finishing their speech, Kiyo leans forward and whispers in your ear, "Finally. I thought that would never end. So, where are we going to go first, Hinata?" You couldn't help but smile. While you are the heir to the throne, your friends treat you as anybody else, especially Kiyo. As you were about to respond, you noticed what appeared at first as a child waving at you, trying to get your attention. You didn't think much of it at first, since you were royalty, so you were about to wave back until you looked closer. What you perceived as a child actually had a grown man's face, beard and all. While you continue to stare in awe at what you are seeing, the small man motioned you to follow him and then takes off in the crowd, heading towards the western side of the city. Once he took off, it finally came to you as to what you saw: a gnome. A small creature usually found in the Glistening Woodlands up north. Why would a gnome be all the way down here in the capital of the empire? With curiosity getting the best of you, you start after the gnome. As you do, Miyu shouts, "Hey where are you going?" You didn't have time to explain as you were starting to lose the gnome, so all you say is, "Kageo, keep eyes on that small man. Find out where he's going." Kageo quickly went into action and was able to use his skills to easily make his way through the crowd and keeping on the gnome's trail. You paused on the edge of the square, waiting for the rest of your friends to catch up. "What's up?" asked Kishi. You quickly explained what you saw. "A gnome in the city? Are you sure that's what you saw?" Miyu asked. Kiyo replied, "A gnome? I haven't seen one before. Do you think its friendly? I would like to know more about them, like what their homes are like, what they eat, what they do in their free time, wh.." "That's enough for now, Kiyo," you state. "We need to catch up to Kageo. Let's go." All of you start to walk west down the main road, towards the gate, looking for Kageo as you want. He finally meets back up with you near the city walls. "Went into the tavern. Don't know why," Kageo told them. You take a look at the tavern. It looks a little wore down and has seen better days. Of course, this tavern was for commoners and travelers who were low on coin. You never had any reason to travel this close to the gate before and thus never been inside. "Well, let's see if we can find out," you say, and then step into the tavern. At this time of day, it wasn't very pack. The first thing you noticed were a couple of travelers at a table near the door have a quiet conversation and the barkeep cleaning a mug. You finally noticed the gnome near the back, talking with a lone figure sitting at a table, facing the front door. The figure was already looking in your direction and dismissed the gnome. Clearly this is who you were supposed to meet. You start making your way to the stranger when Kageo stops you, and you see a bit of disgust in his eyes. "Wait, that is not a human." You look closer and the figure lifted their head some. That was when you noticed. The amber eyes, the dark fur with grey streaks. Every noble has been warned about this person. The one who hunted the roads of the empire. The Silver Fox. The Silver Fox motioned towards you and spoke, "Come here, Hinata, didn't anyone teach you it's rude to keep someone waiting? ...Sorry, perhaps I should call you your majesty? My name is Argenti Vulpes, and we need to talk."
