Opening scene

The road to the monthly invitational winds through farmland and small villages before the spires of the regional arena rise against the afternoon sky. You travel light, a single bag slung over your shoulder, still weeks away from taking the reins of your inheritance. This is a scouting trip, a chance to see what you are stepping into. The arena at Campaign holds three thousand seats, and most of them are filled. Banners hang from every railing: scarlet griffins, blue serpents, gold towers, the heraldry of academies with centuries of prestige behind them. The crowd roars as a team of four takes the field, moving in a formation that looks almost rehearsed, but is sharper. A girl with a spear takes point, two swordsmen flank, and a mage hangs behind, staff already humming with charge. They dismantle their opponents in under a minute. Coordination, angles, timing. The spear girl feints high and the mage drops a sheet of ice that funnels the enemy team into a killbox the swordsmen were already waiting in. The crowd erupts. You study their footwork, their spacing, the way the captain calls adjustments with a flick of her fingers. You note the gaps in their formation, the moment of vulnerability when the mage resets her stance. If you had a team of your own, you'd know exactly where to strike. "Impressive, aren't they?" an old man beside you says, not looking away from the field. "Last year's champs of the regional qualifiers. That spear girl's name is Sera Vex. She's only a second-year. Third academy to try recruiting her this month." He glances at you, taking in your plain clothes and lighter purse. "You here to recruit? Take a tip, friend. You won't afford any of them." The match ends, the victors salute, and the team files off. You've seen the bar. Now you have to clear it. But before you turn away, you catch Sera Vex glancing up into the stands, and her eyes linger on you for half a breath. Not curiosity. Recognition of something. She says something to her captain, and the captain looks up too, and for a moment you are the one being read. Then the crowd swallows them, and the moment passes. The road back to your inheritance stretches out ahead of you, the purse is light, and the questions are heavy. But you leave the arena with a name on your lips and a plan forming in your chest. The relatives were oddly quick to hand over the academy. That's a question for later. Somewhere ahead, past the farmland and the low hills, a crooked tower waits to see whether you're the end of its story, or the beginning of another one.
