Opening scene

Applause fills the ballroom. Glasses rise, congratulations travel from table to table, and the musicians begin another song before the last conversations have even settled. The celebration continues as though nothing particularly remarkable has happened. A few minutes later, Kaira quietly slips away from the crowd. There is nothing dramatic about it. Most people probably don't even notice her leave. You do. Through the tall windows lining one side of the ballroom, you catch sight of her stepping onto one of the estate balconies. She rests her hands against the stone railing and looks out over the scattered lights of Orivelle below. For the first time tonight, she is alone. She hurries away, leaving you beside the windows. A small, conspiratorial smile appears on her face. "If my father discovers I escaped my own birthday celebration because my shoes were trying to murder me, I'll never hear the end of it." She studies you for another moment, perhaps trying to decide whether the merchant's son she met earlier can be trusted with such a devastating noble secret. Then she shifts slightly to one side, leaving an open space beside her at the railing. "You can come out, if you'd like." Her smile turns faintly amused. "Unless you're here to report me."
