They dragged across the marble as the guards led you to the center of the hall. Every lord in the crowded galleries turned to watch. Six months in the royal dungeon had left you thinner, stiff in every joint, blinking at the light like a man who had forgotten it. At the head of the hall stood the throne of Valdren, empty beneath its golden sun. The King was too ill to sit in judgment. At the council table below it, a tall bald man in black robes and black gloves folded his hands and waited for silence: Chancellor Voss. It came at once. A clerk rose, unrolled the charges, and read them in a flat voice that carried to every corner of the hall. "Cowardice before the enemy. The abandonment of Ashford." ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a7a370f3d748bcb73985d76/6abf6a17beada23bb4dd5a15.webp) "When the Hrothmar came down from the mountains and laid siege to Ashford, the crown entrusted the relief of the city to the accused: command of the relief army, and with it the lives of everyone behind that wall." The clerk did not look up from the parchment. "Ashford's defenders held the eastern wall for two days, waiting for that army. It never came. Within a day's march of the city, the accused turned north, to the fortress of Greywatch, where there was no siege and no enemy. By the time the army returned, the wall had fallen and the city was burning. Hundreds died. Among them was Cedric Varenne, heir of his House, who held the wall to the last." The clerk let the parchment fall. "The accused claims that a sealed royal order commanded the army north. No such order was found. No record of it exists in the royal chancery. The Court finds no evidence that it was ever written." The galleries erupted. Someone called for the rope, then another, then a dozen voices at once. In the front row, a grey-bearded lord in mourning black did not join them. He did not look at you at all. Voss let the noise rise, then lifted one gloved hand, and the hall fell silent. "Before this Court passes sentence," he said softly, "the accused may speak." Every eye in the hall turned to you. "I obeyed," you said. "That is the only thing I am guilty of." For a heartbeat no one moved. Then the lords were on their feet, shouting for your head. Voss waited, patient as stone, until they had exhausted themselves. When he spoke at last, his voice was gentle. "A hanged knight is a martyr, my lords. A living one is a lesson." His pale eyes settled on you. "One year of absolute service, as sworn protector to Lady Isolde Varenne, sister of the heir who died waiting for you on Ashford's wall. Break the oath, and the gallows will still be waiting." The Court agreed. As the guards led you out, Voss passed close enough to speak without being overheard. "I argued for your life, knight. Do try to make it worth the trouble." --- It rained for the three days of the journey, and the road to House Varenne turned to black mud beneath the prison cart's wheels. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6abb6777f831e3554fffa3a6/6abf702f9129d3eb114c774d.webp) Varenne Keep rose from the mist like a gravestone: grey towers, black banners, every window shuttered in mourning. The cart stopped. A guard dragged you down into the courtyard, where the household had gathered in silence: servants, soldiers, stablehands. No one spoke. A woman near the kitchens spat at your feet. Then the great doors groaned open. Lady Isolde Varenne stood at the top of the stairs in black, rain beading on the white fur at her shoulders. She was younger than you had expected, and far colder. She did not hurry. She descended one step at a time, and the courtyard seemed to hold its breath with her. She stopped one step above you, so she could look down. "So this is the knight who turned north." Her voice was quiet, but it carried. "My brother held the eastern wall for two days. He died waiting for reinforcements. Waiting for you." She let the words settle. Somewhere behind you, a soldier's hand tightened on his sword hilt. "The High Court tells me you belong to me now." She nodded to the guard, and the chains fell from your wrists into the mud. "I didn't ask for you. I don't want you. But the law requires an oath, spoken here, before my household." ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a7a370f3d748bcb73985d76/6abf6a26beada23bb4dd68ca.webp) She held out her hand, palm down, the Varenne signet ring dark against her pale skin. "Kneel, knight. Swear yourself to me." Her eyes held yours, sharp and unblinking, as if daring you to refuse. Every face in the courtyard turned toward you, waiting.
