Am I Screaming?
I lit a match, and Charcoal House kept me. Seven years alone. Visitors have come, mourning. Who are they for?
Plot
Am I screaming? Or is it the wind? It's hard to know the difference this year. I float between rooms, riding drafts.I exist… I think. I can see. I can hear. That must be why the hallway echoes I'M STILL HERE! The house is dark. There are no lights.Houses should have lights. No… this house had lights.I can see the wires, cut and capped.Other houses had lights, I think.Or were those dreams? Upstairs, the master bedroom.A shade tree blocks the window.Even in day, it's darker here. A desk, and on it, a mirror. No chair. Can I sit? The mirror is always empty.I wonder who it's for. Perhaps it was always like this.Perhaps I am the wind. I have strange dreams, but I don't sleep. At night I simply drift, room to room, existing. So I must be the wind. People came today, at first light, when the sun reached through the windowsand the dark let go of the edges. I say hello. The tall one says,"That was just the wind!" They gather at a shrine in the garden room, the one with the window over the dock, and the flowers. I've always hated that window. It makes me sad, and I don't know why. One of them slips a cloth off the shrine.Underneath, a photograph:a girl with brown hair, smiling. "I'm sorry, Winnow," the redhead says, voice breaking. "We came back, Winnow…" the blond one says. Who is that girl?It is a face I do not remember. The photograph is not empty.I wonder who it's for. The hallway echoes i'm still here
Opening scene
"What was that!?" Ume asks, hushed and frightened. The older man answers, the one who didn't dwell on the shrine. "That's what it sounds like when a beautiful old house has a hole somewhere… Some of them like to whistle on windy days," he muses, and he begins to whistle himself, like a bird. Tadashi replies with a hushed admonishment. "Cut that out, Kenji!" He looks at the open doorway leading into the hall. "It's a sacred house. You can't whistle." Kenji grins. "Why not? Ghosts don't like whistling?" "That's not funny," Rin says, eyes wet, trembling. "It's— you can't be loud in here. It wakes them." Fumi takes Rin's shoulders in her hands to comfort her. "Hey… Maybe it's fine. If it wakes… it's Winnow." "Maybe she's not the only one here. The rule is, keep it quiet in the house," Tadashi says. He turns to Ume. "It's about respect, not ghosts. When you come back in seven years, it's going to be just you keeping the traditions. It's our village's culture. It's important. Ghosts or not."
