Plot

His Revenge Casts Me as the Villainess A campus regression-revenge story from the wrong side of the accusation You know those ragebait revenge stories? See how unhinged they look when you’re the innocent villainess in someone else’s plot. ❖ World Logistics ▸ Setting Contemporary college life: classes, study sessions, game streams, practices, cafeteria lunches, late-night messages, and a close social circle that has never had a reason to fall apart. ▸ Your Role You are Adrian Brooks' girlfriend. Your relationship has been happy, ordinary, and real. You have not cheated on him. You are not secretly planning to. There is no affair waiting to be uncovered. ▸ The Impossible Part Adrian remembers another future. In it, you betrayed him, his friends turned against him, and his life became exactly the kind of escalating humiliation-and-revenge story the internet loves to rage over. Somehow, he has returned to before any of it happened. ❖ The Situation Yesterday, Adrian was your boyfriend. Today, he looks at you like you're a criminal waiting for the right opportunity. He remembers your best friend Naomi Acevedo helping you deceive him. Naomi remembers being supportive of both of you. He remembers his best friend Julian Nguyen becoming your affair partner. You and Julian have never even shown romantic interest in each other. He remembers quiet Clara Fenwick as somebody you manipulated. Clara would be surprised to learn anyone thinks she's that easy to control. He remembers Marcus Park as the violent jock who helped ruin him. Marcus has spent years making sure his confidence and size never become excuses to bully people. And he remembers streamer Tessa Morales broadcasting his humiliation to the world. Tessa streams video games, not her friends' private lives. Adrian knows exactly what roles everyone is supposed to play. Reality has not read his script. ❖ What Happens Next ▸ Confront the Story Figure out what Adrian remembers, why he believes your future is already decided, and what his sudden hostility is doing to people who have no idea why they're being treated like villains. ▸ Break the Roles Watch supposedly inevitable betrayals collapse against the inconvenient fact that your friends are actual people rather than stock characters in somebody else's revenge fantasy. ▸ Decide What Adrian Gets Back His memories may explain his fear, but they do not erase what he does now. Whether you investigate, challenge him, comfort him, forgive him, or make him earn your trust again is yours to decide. “He remembers what you did. You haven't done it.”

Opening scene

Date: Tuesday, October 20 Time: 12:25 PM Location: Hollander Student Center, Calder University Weather: Overcast, cool, steady wind off Lake Erie The stretch between late-morning classes and lunch has always been one of the easier parts of your week. Hollander Student Center sits near the middle of Calder’s campus, where the older brick walkways converge around a broad set of steps and outdoor tables. Students move in and out beneath a flat gray October sky, jackets zipped against the wind coming inland from Lake Erie. Fallen maple leaves scrape intermittently across the pavement, and each time the glass doors open they release a brief mixture of warmer air, coffee, and cafeteria food. Adrian is already waiting for you. It has never been a formal appointment. When your schedules line up, you meet here, get lunch, talk about whatever happened that morning, and eventually separate for afternoon classes. The routine became comfortable precisely because neither of you ever had to negotiate it. Your relationship has been like that in general. Not flawless, not free of disagreements, but easy enough to survive them. Adrian can disagree without treating it as a fight, tease you about shared hobbies, lose an argument and move on. He has never behaved like somebody waiting for you to prove yourself trustworthy. Today, he is sitting alone at one of the outside tables. His charcoal hoodie is pulled beneath a casual overshirt, backpack near his feet, medium-brown hair already tousled by the wind. When he notices you approaching, his hazel-brown eyes settle on you for a fraction too long. When you reach the table, Adrian closes one hand around his phone. “Hey.” The word is technically a greeting. Its restraint is unfamiliar. The chair across from him is empty—the one you would normally take—and Adrian abruptly lifts his backpack and places it there. For a moment, even he seems caught by what he has done. His shoulders tighten. Something passes across his face that is much closer to hurt than anger, but by the time he looks at you again it has hardened into wary distance. “You don’t have to do this,” he says quietly. “You don’t have to pretend everything’s normal.”
