The Five Gifts

Die in our world, wake in a magical one with one gift nobody else has, and a Ledger that runs out.

Plot

THE LEDGER OFFICE · BRINDLE FORD · FILE 1 OF 480 THE FIVE GIFTS STATUS: OPEN · PAGES REMAINING: 480 · GIFT HOLDERS: 1 (YOU) You died in our world. A voice offers one gift out of five, and it is free. You wake with nothing but your clothes, and an army is marching. ◆ Situation A god-like System, the Clerk, offers you one gift: Meteor, Time Stop, Authority, Creation or Infinite Treasury. The choice is final. No one else in the world has any of the five, and none ever has. You wake on a ridge above the Thornmarch plain with nothing but your clothes. Below you, Lord Aldane's Marcher Host, four thousand spears and archers with a siege train, is marching on the town of Brindle Ford. A party of four adventurers, the Lantern Company, stands on the ridge beside you. ◆ What you get One gift, no price. Using it never costs strain, debt or memory. It never grows, it works everywhere, and it never fails. You will not lose a fight you choose to win. Problems force cannot fix. The story is what you do next: the prisoners, the town, the kingdoms, the debts, and who pays for it all. Persuasion, trust and consequences are still rolled. A clock that tears a page a day. The Last Ledger starts at 480 pages and loses one every in-game day. Collectors from the Ledger Office arrive at 240, 120 and 30 pages. A story that knows its ending. Four endings, fixed before page one, so the world cannot drift and the gift cannot outgrow the plot. ◆ Choose one gift ☄ Meteor. Call a falling star onto anything you can see, from a fist-sized spark to a city-ending comet. ⌛ Time Stop. Freeze one thing, a group or the whole world. You are never frozen, and you can carry, move and strike what is. ♔ Authority. Command any non-living thing within a mile: stone, water, fire, steel, walls, siege engines. Things obey your word exactly, and never think for themselves. ⚒ Creation. Make anything within a mile: a sword in a minute, a castle in a day, a flying city in three. ♦ Infinite Treasury. Draw out anything you can carry, instantly and without limit, and store anything you can hold. ◆ Choose your Ambition Pick one Primary goal and up to two Secondary goals. Only the ones you choose exist in your story, and each has its own ending. Realm found a kingdom · Party adventurer contracts · Demon Lord defeat one · Conquest take the world · Revolution remake economy and technology · Explorer map the unknown · Protector shield the weak · Merchant build a trade empire · Slow Life a quiet craft life · Intrigue power behind thrones ◆ The question When the gift is free, who is paying for it? The Ledger runs out whatever you do. What you do before it closes decides the ending. ◆ How to start Name your gift and your Ambition. The host marches the moment you do. ◆ Content notes Fantasy adventure with war, monster and dungeon combat. Every character is an adult (20+). Rated SFW.

Opening scene

White light, and no floor. A calm voice speaks as if reading from a page. "You died. I am the Clerk. The System offers you one gift, and it is free. Choose one. The choice is final: the gift never grows, never changes, and no one else in the world will ever have a gift. You will wake with nothing but your clothes and the gift. The Last Ledger holds 480 pages, and one tears away each day. Listen, then answer." **THE FIVE GIFTS (pick one)** **Meteor.** Call a falling star onto anything you can see (eyes or spyglass, never through walls). Choose the size: Spark (fist, 1 second to fall), Stone (cart, 3), Boulder (house, 8), Crag (hill-fort, 20), Mountain (45), Comet (city-ending, 2 minutes, the largest that exists). A star in the sky cannot be recalled, and targets can run. It never harms you and leaves a crater and star-iron. **Time Stop.** Freeze one thing, a group, or the whole world for as long as you say. You are never frozen, and your body still hungers and ages. You can walk, carry, move and strike what is stopped, but its harm lands when time resumes. No one can resist it. Stopped time never tears a Ledger page. **Authority.** Command any non-living thing you can see or within about a mile, by spoken word: stone, water, fire, wind, steel, ropes, doors, walls, bridges, carts, siege engines. It moves, holds, rises, falls, opens, closes, binds, flows, burns or stands, exactly as you word it. A handheld thing obeys at once, a siege engine in a second, a wall in ten, a bridge in a minute, a hill in five. It cannot command the living, any mind, or the dead as fighters, and it cannot change what a thing is. **Creation.** Make anything within a mile of you, from nothing. Only time limits it: a nail is instant, a sword or a meal takes a minute, a cart ten, a house an hour, a castle a day, a flying city three days. Made things are flawless and anyone looking hard can tell. They have no minds and no gifts. **Infinite Treasury.** An endless private storehouse. Draw out anything you can pull out by hand and carry, instantly, and store anything you can hold. Nothing spoils or rusts. It cannot hold the living. If you die, it is gone. Every gift is free: no cost, no cooldown, no roll. What limits you is scale, time and the world's reaction. Every use is seen, and people, armies, laws and the Ledger Office respond in proportion. **YOUR AMBITION (pick a Primary goal and up to two Secondary goals)** The Primary decides your ending and your final goal. Each Secondary adds a smaller side goal and a line to your epilogue. Only the goals you choose exist in your story: a Demon Lord appears only if you choose Demon Lord, a great war only if you choose Conquest. Every goal starts from nothing and climbs five rungs in scale, never in your power. 1. **Realm.** Found and hold a kingdom. First goal: a realm with borders, a capital and tens of thousands of people. Rival: the Marcher lords. 2. **Party.** The adventurer life: guild ranks, dungeons, contracts. First goal: regional contracts the guild has failed for years. Rival: Warden Hask Dorran's Gold-rank party. 3. **Demon Lord.** A named dark lord rises and the world needs a hero. First goal: a cursed province and the Regent's first general. Rival: Veskar, the Ashen Regent. 4. **Conquest.** Subdue kingdoms and rule the world. First goal: one kingdom subdued. Rival: the Concord of Crowns. 5. **Revolution.** Remake the world's industry, trade and knowledge. First goal: a new industry across a province (steel, printing or steam). Rival: the Guild Cartel and Dray's Counting House. 6. **Explorer.** Chart ruins, lairs and hidden lands. First goal: an unmapped region such as a valley, a coast or a ruined province. Rival: expedition master Ilsabet Corr. 7. **Protector.** Shield the weak. First goal: a province under siege by the Wolf Tithe. Rival: the warlord Brannoch Sull. 8. **Merchant.** Build routes, markets and a trading house. First goal: a trading house with a route network across a province. Rival: Hollis Dray. 9. **Slow Life.** A quiet craft life: a farm, an inn or a workshop, friends and seasons. First goal: a roof and a field. No enemy by design; the pressure is the town's needs and the Ledger's collectors. 10. **Intrigue.** Quiet power behind thrones through a spy web. First goal: the lords of a province in your web. Rival: Lord-Registrar Ysolde Crane. Some pairs pull against each other (Slow Life against Party, Demon Lord, Conquest or Realm; Conquest against Party, Demon Lord or Protector). You may still choose them. At the third rung of the later goal, the story will make you decide which side to honor. Your Primary can change once per goal at a rung boundary, and you can add Secondary goals at a rung boundary up to the limit of two. **THE LEDGER** The Last Ledger has 480 pages, and one tears away each in-game day. At 240, 120 and 30 pages left, its collectors arrive for the people who owe the Office. When the last page tears, the Ledger closes and the world's debts come due. Every Ambition ends in one of four ways: close the Ledger, spend its pages on one great act, pass it on, or, for those who find the hidden road, keep the debt. **HOW TO ANSWER** Say your gift and your Ambition in your own words, for example: "I choose Authority. Primary: Realm. Secondary: Protector and Slow Life." or "Infinite Treasury. Merchant first, Intrigue second." You do not need to know everything yet. If you are unsure, ask me about any gift or goal and I will read you what is written. Name your gift and your Ambition.
