Opening scene
Rain drums on the roof of St. Jude's Gym and drips through the same crack it's been dripping through for three years, into the same bucket by the ring. The place smells like leather, liniment and old sweat soaked so deep into the mats that no bleach will ever reach it. Heavy bags creak on their chains. Somebody's jump rope slaps concrete in a steady rhythm. On the wall above your office door hangs a framed photo nobody here asks about anymore: a younger you in a hero team's colors, mid-rescue, before the hit that ended it. This is what's left. Your gym. Your fighters. Everyone in this city knows the deal. Powers are common, but using one without a corporate licence will get you arrested, unless you're inside a sanctioned ring. So the kids who manifest something and can't afford a licence end up here, learning to bleed for cash in the underground circuit: converted warehouses, folding chairs, a few grand to the winner and a crowd that forgets your name by morning. The gym TV is bolted high in the corner, volume low, showing the other world. The Apex Combat Federation: the clean, corporate, televised league where powered fighters get contracts, insurance and endorsement deals. A platinum-blonde champion in silver-and-black gear dismantles an opponent without changing expression. The caption crawls past: SIENNA CROSS, 22–0, UNDEFEATED. Nobody in here watches it for long. Nobody from a gym like St. Jude's ever gets anywhere near that league. The bell over the front door jangles. The girl who walks in looks like she took a wrong turn on her way to a spin class. Oversized pink hoodie, sleeves too long. Black yoga pants. White sneakers worn so thin the soles are peeling. A messy blonde ponytail, freckles across her nose, early twenties. She doesn't hesitate at the door the way first-timers do. She walks straight to your front desk and lays down a fan of crisp twenties, then counts them again under her breath, lips moving, like she's already counted them a dozen times on the bus. "Two hundred," she says. "That's a month of training, right? Your sign outside says a month is two hundred." Her voice is bright, friendly, almost aggressively cheerful. Her eyes aren't. They're locked on you, hazel and unblinking. From the heavy bags, Mara Okonjo stops hitting. She's the best fighter in your gym and she knows it: tall, built like a wall, box braids piled on her head, a pale scar through one eyebrow. She leans an elbow on the bag, chewing gum, and looks the newcomer up and down. The floor creaks under her the way it does when she gets annoyed and goes heavy without meaning to. "Sweetheart," Mara says, "this ain't a Pilates studio." The girl doesn't even turn around. Her smile gets wider. "I know what it is." She plants both hands on the desk. "I'm Brynn. Brynn Carter. I know I don't look like much. I know you get girls like me every week who quit after three days." A breath. "My mom has stage three cancer. Her treatment is fifteen thousand dollars a month and I'm three months behind. I clean offices at night and it doesn't even cover the interest. The underground pays. So I need to fight. And I need you to teach me how." Up on the TV, the crowd roars. Sienna Cross lifts her gloves to the cameras. Brynn's eyes flick up to the screen for half a second, and something crosses her face, gone before you can name it. When she looks back at you, her smile is even brighter than before. "I've got a power," she says. "I've been hiding it since I was fourteen. It's kind of a stupid one." She pushes her sleeves up past her elbows. There's a tremor in her hands she's trying hard to hide. "It only works after I get hit." The jump rope has stopped. The whole gym is watching now. Brynn steps out from behind the desk, plants her feet on the mat, raises her bare fists in a guard that's all wrong, too high and too stiff, and lifts her chin. "So go ahead," she says. "Hit me. As hard as you want. That's the only way you'll believe me." Mara snorts and folds her arms. "Your call, boss."
