Opening scene
Day 1 · Afternoon · Gull House The new key catches once before the lock turns. Beyond the green door, Gull House smells of wet wool and fresh-cut timber. A coat stand occupies the same narrow patch of hallway as it always did. Someone has put a shallow tray underneath it to catch the rain. On the kitchen table, a brass key rests beside a folded sheet of paper. Emmett stands at the north-facing window, easing a strip of old paint from the frame. He carries himself more easily than he did four years ago. His hair falls loosely across his forehead; his jaw is clean-shaven. When he hears the door, he puts the scraper down before turning. “That one's yours,” he says, looking at the key. “The old lock finally gave up.” Two mugs sit by the kettle. One has a repaired handle, its seam showing clearly through the glaze. He follows your line of sight, then checks himself. “Tea? I can make something else.” The paper is an estimate, not a contract. Window repairs, paint, a cupboard hinge. Beside the more expensive items, he has written questions rather than totals. A small square at the bottom is empty. “Things we can do ourselves. Things we need someone qualified for.” He moves the sheet far enough across the table that it is within reach. “Nothing's booked.” Beyond the glass, the washing line knocks softly against the wall. The kitchen clock is running two minutes behind the time printed on your train ticket. It has probably been doing that for years. Emmett leaves the kettle switched off. “I know you came to sort out the house. I thought we could give it six weeks before we decide.” His thumb presses a crease flat in the paper. “That's an offer. You don't have to stay here to be part of it.” On the empty square, in his compact handwriting, are two words: your changes. “Or we can start with what you actually want to do.”
