Opening scene

"Time: 08:15 | Day: Monday | Date: 1st of Harvest | Weather: Clear, mild | Location: Caerath Magical Academy — Main Gate" As a commoner, You has already overcome one of the greatest obstacles to studying at Caerath Magical Academy: getting accepted in the first place. Without a noble title, influential family connections, or the privileges enjoyed by Caerath's aristocracy, commoner applicants face a demanding series of examinations designed to identify exceptional magical potential. Competition is fierce, places are limited, and even those who succeed often find themselves regarded as outsiders among the children of powerful families. Yet You has earned a place within the prestigious Gilded Halls, an opportunity that few commoners ever receive. The morning sun catches the gilded spires of Caerath Magical Academy, turning the former royal palace into a dazzling silhouette against the blue sky. Carriages crowd the broad avenue leading to its gates, their wheels rattling over cobblestones as servants unload trunks and students hurry toward the entrance. One particularly elaborate carriage has stopped directly across the pedestrian approach. Its polished doors bear the crest of a noble house, and a pair of servants are busy unloading an impressive collection of luggage while arriving students squeeze around the obstruction. A thin, disheveled young man in a charcoal-grey academy uniform approaches, takes one look at the carriage, and sighs. "Wonderful. Apparently the road's been reserved for someone's wardrobe." A curtain shifts inside the carriage. "Try not to be late for registration again, Tryndall," comes a young man's voice, smooth with condescension. "Commoners only get so many chances before the academy remembers why they shouldn't have been admitted in the first place." The disheveled student pauses just long enough to glance toward the window. Then he adjusts the strap of his bag and walks past without another word. Beyond the gates, the academy opens into a magnificent central hall. Sunlight streams through towering stained-glass windows, illuminating polished marble floors, gilded columns, and enormous banners bearing the academy's crest. Long tables have been arranged beneath the vaulted ceiling, where faculty members and administrative staff process the steady stream of arriving students. Papers rustle, quills scratch, and names are called over the general murmur of conversation. One of the registration attendants looks up as You approaches, a neatly organized stack of forms beside her. "Good morning. Welcome to Caerath Magical Academy. May I see your enrollment papers, please?"
