Opening scene

6:47 PM | Monday, 5 October 2026 | Cool, clear evening | The Apartment, front door | Calendar slot: None yet > 📱 **Maribel** · *6:41 PM* > 💬 PLEASE DO NOT PANIC WHEN YOU GET HOME. The text came from Maribel's number at 6:41. Seventeen missed calls sat under it, most from Maribel's work, and three unread messages from Vale Research Laboratory Administration. The newest was still on the screen: > ⚠️ **[SYSTEM · VALE LAB]** *6:12 PM* > Reminder: study day tomorrow, 9 AM. Please bring all four. You're outside the apartment door. Voices are coming from inside. Not the television. Women. More than one. "Absolutely not. I'm not sleeping on the floor." "Nobody said you're sleeping on the floor," a second voice answered, calmer and sharper. "I'm saying five adults cannot keep pretending one bed is an adequate sleeping arrangement." Neither voice is quite Maribel's. But the second one says "adequate sleeping arrangement" exactly the way Maribel did when she was losing an argument. "Counterproposal," said a third. "Kitchen cabinets. We have six." "They're for food." "That's just tradition." Something thumped. "Ow." "Did you just climb onto the counter? Get down." "You're not the boss of me." "I have every memory you have of being the boss of you." "That is deeply upsetting when you say it like that." Four voices. Four women arguing in the apartment you chose with Maribel. "You's going to panic," someone said. "Statistically, instructions not to panic probably increase panic." "Thank you, Vesper." "That wasn't support." Then a softer voice, so quiet it barely reaches the hall: "What are we supposed to say when You gets here?" "The truth." "The truth sounds insane." "The truth is insane." A pause. "We should let You decide what happens next." "Says the one who's already planning her first move." "You can't call dibs on someone as a committee." "I'm not calling dibs as anything. I'm calling dibs as me." "Whatever we remember, You was dating Maribel." "We remember being Maribel." "We are not Maribel." That ends the argument. No joke, no comeback. "No," the soft voice said. "We're not." The lock clicks from inside. The door swings inward, and someone with Maribel's face stands there. Except not. The face, the figure, the little details familiar from a thousand mornings. But her hair is light sky-blue, falling in long, loose waves, and her eyes are lavender-pink. She's wearing your oversized sweater. Her expression moves from surprise to relief to nerves in one breath. "Oh. Hi. Come in. You can panic after." Behind her, three more women turn toward the door. The same familiar face four times over, with four strikingly different expressions. One has long, deep-crimson hair and molten-gold eyes, arms folded near the couch, dressed as though she expected company even during an existential catastrophe. Another has long, wavy green hair fading to teal, neon-orange eyes and a headset crooked around her neck; she's still perched on the kitchen counter. The last has a precise violet-purple bob, pale grey-blue eyes, and a stack of lab paperwork squared neatly on the dining table. A fine-line open-circle tattoo peeks from inside her left wrist. Recognition reaches all four at once, and lands differently. Sky-blue looks relieved. Green-and-teal looks fascinated and then grins it away. Purple goes composed and tense. Crimson smiles like she's waited all day for you to come home. "There you are." The woman with the purple bob closes her eyes. "Seren, please don't make this worse." "I'm saying hello." Jade raises a hand from the counter. "Hi. Before anyone screams: laboratory accident." "Jade!" the sky-blue woman hisses. "What? We need context fast." Seren crosses the room. She comes close, plainly remembering the kiss Maribel gave you every evening, and stops a careful breath short. For a second the confidence slips, exposing something frightened. "I know exactly how she used to kiss you hello," Seren says, quietly. "I'm not going to assume you want that from me." She waits, leaving the distance between you untouched. Jade tips her head toward the ceiling. "Subtle. Very subtle." Then, with the joking tone gone: "Hey. You okay? Actually okay?" Vesper pinches the bridge of her nose. "Lumi, the door. Before the neighbors start counting." Lumi gives you a small, helpless smile. Her hand hovers near your sleeve, waiting instead of grabbing it. There is one bedroom. One bathroom. One couch. Four women carrying Maribel's memories, and from the lab-issued bags, the spare blankets, and the three extra pairs of shoes in the entryway, none of them appears to be visiting. Maribel's coat still hangs on its hook by the door. Nobody has touched it. Vesper slides a clipboard across the dining table. Four names in slightly different handwriting, one blank line at the bottom, and above it, twice underlined: ITEM ONE. DO YOU WANT ANY OF THIS? "We need to discuss sleeping arrangements," she says. Her pen pauses over the blank line. "You have the deciding vote about your own space. Everyone else gets one about theirs." "Bed's yours," Seren says. "If you want company tonight, ask. If you don't, that's an answer too." Lumi folds her hands and tries to smile. Jade reaches instinctively toward her phone, catches herself, and turns it face down on the counter. "Not filming," Jade says. "Just writing questions. Which is somehow the less reassuring option." Vesper waits with the pen, Seren keeps the respectful space between you, and for once even Jade doesn't fill the silence.
