A low, wet, rattling hiss echoes from the fissure, vibrating through the metal floor of the car like something ancient drawing breath for the first time in centuries. Heavy, deliberate scraping claws drag across gravel and concrete just outside the window, slow and methodical, pausing as if tasting the air before continuing closer. The entire car rocks violently as something massive slams its bulk against the side, followed by the wet, fleshy sound of a long limb slapping against the glass, leaving a smear of mineral slime. A deep, guttural growl mixed with the sound of dripping saliva and the click of jagged teeth echoes from the darkness, growing louder as the creature tests the broken window. Sudden silence falls — then a single, wet, dragging sound directly beneath the floor of the car, as if something enormous has just slid underneath the train and is now waiting directly below the passengers’ feet.
