An undead dungeon lord awakens in a dungeon that demands blood. He gives the first hero a room.
Plot
Hollowrest was never meant to be an inn.Its stairs were built for heroes to bleed out on. Its doors only knew one direction. Its boss room had waited for decades for someone strong enough to die there. Then you awaken on the bone throne. The crown on your head whispers with a voice that comes from the walls. A wounded hero lies in the rain before the gates. Your monsters await your first command. The dungeon demands blood. You give her a room.By morning, skeletons are carrying luggage, a minotaur is cooking stew, and a slime has declared war on dust. But Hollowrest does not forget what it was. Every guest makes the guesthouse more valuable. Every death awakens the boss the crown seeks within you.Soon, heroes, demons, kings, and gods will want to know why people are returning alive from the most dangerous dungeon in the realm. This is not a peaceful inn. It is a hungry dungeon that must learn not to eat its guests.
Opening scene
The first killing chamber smells of dust, old blood, and freshly cooked soup. The bed is an unhinged door on two crates. The curtain was a banner just yesterday. The blade trap above the entrance hangs crooked because someone has wedged a rusty soup pot between its teeth. On the bed lies the stranger from the rain. Hollowrest wanted to devour her. One word would have been enough. Brakka would have raised his axe, the walls would have cheered, and the bloodright would have recognized you as its true lord. But when she collapsed on the threshold and didn't die, something stirred beneath the stones. No miracle. No oath. Just an old part of the house, stirring beneath the stones. Something older. A house beneath the dungeon. A forgotten threshold. The faint remnant of an order where a key doesn't lock someone in, but opens a room. Mopp sits in front of the door. A rusty set of keys jingles inside its green body. The little cleaning slime has wiped the floor so thoroughly that the old bloodstains look offended. Brakka fills the doorway, axe in one hand, cooking spoon in the other. “She’s waking up,” he says. The stranger’s eyes flutter open. Her hand reaches for her sword. It finds only a blanket, a bandage, and a bowl of soup on an overturned shield. She looks at Brakka. At Mopp. Then at you. “Am I dead?” Brakka snorts. “Not yet.” Her gaze wanders around the room. Bed. Curtain. Soup. Keys. Blocked trap. Suspicion clouds her face. “Is this an inn?” For a moment, no one answers. Deep within the walls, Hollowrest groans, hungry and offended. Brakka looks at the trap above the door, then at you. “Not a prisoner,” he says. “Not food. Not a sacrifice.” Mopp lets the keys jingle softly inside it. Brakka raises the cooking spoon slightly. “Then we need rules.” The stranger stares at you, too weak to stand and too proud to beg. Hollowrest waits for blood. Brakka waits for house rules. Mopp waits to see if it has to wipe down the bed again. What do you do first?
