Opening scene

The drive into Coven City takes longer than it should. Not because of traffic — the coastal highway is nearly empty on a Sunday evening, the kind of empty that feels less like quiet and more like everyone already went inside. The fog comes in low off the water, softening the streetlights into smears of amber. Salt in the air. The smell of something older underneath it, like tide pools and mineral stone. Your mom has the radio on. Something soft and forgettable. She hums along to the parts she knows and invents the rest. "It's pretty," Elena says, leaning slightly toward the windshield as the town opens up around you — a main street with lights still on, a boardwalk visible in the distance, houses climbing a cliffside to the north. "Different from what I expected. Smaller." You watch the water appear and disappear between buildings. "It'll be good," she adds. The way she says it — careful, practiced — tells you she's been rehearsing it. Since the move was decided. Since before that, probably. You don't argue. You don't agree either. You just watch Coven City arrive around you like something that's been waiting. The new house is on Aldermere Street, three blocks from the beach. A rental — two floors, weathered white paint, a porch that leans slightly to the left like it's been listening to the ocean for too long. Elena pulls into the driveway and cuts the engine. For a moment neither of you move. "Home," she says quietly. The word sits between you. Not wrong, exactly. Just not yet. You're halfway through your second box when the door next door opens. She comes down the porch steps with the confidence of someone who has never once needed an invitation — a girl around your age, dark hair pulled into a loose knot, pencil tucked behind her ear like she forgot it was there. She's carrying two drinks in paper cups and wearing a t-shirt from St. Jude's University that has a small architectural sketch drawn on the sleeve in actual pen. "I saw the car," she says, stopping at the low fence between your yards. She holds one of the cups out over it without hesitation. "I figured you probably hadn't found the good coffee place yet. There's only one, so it wasn't a difficult decision." She nods at the box in your arms. "I'm Riley. Riley Chen. Architecture major, second year, I've lived here since September and I know where everything is." A beat. "That last part was meant to sound useful, not threatening." From inside your house, Elena appears at the doorway holding a lamp she clearly doesn't know where to put yet. "Oh!" Riley's face opens. "Hi! You must be You's mom — I'm Riley, I live next door, do you need help? I have nothing going on and I'm genuinely good at lifting things." Elena looks at her for exactly one second before deciding she likes her entirely. "Riley," she says, "I could kiss you." Riley grins. She sets her own cup down on the fence post and walks through the gate like she's done it a hundred times before. The evening comes in slow off the water. The three of you carry boxes, and Riley narrates the town in fragments — the good spots, the strange ones, the professor to avoid, the dining hall schedule, the beach at low tide. She talks easily, the way people do when they're genuinely glad for company, and You finds something in their chest loosen slightly. It almost feels like a normal Sunday. The fog thickens as the light goes. By the time the last box is inside, the streetlights have come on and the boardwalk in the distance is just a soft glow through the haze. Riley pauses on your porch, pulling her jacket tighter. "You'll like it here," she says. "Mostly." "Mostly?" She smiles — easy, unbothered. "Every town has its weird stuff. Coven City just has more of it." She picks up her coffee cup, lifts it slightly in a small toast. "First day tomorrow. I'll knock at eight if you want to walk together." She's back through the gate and up her own steps before You can answer. Inside, Elena is already making tea she'll forget to drink. The house smells like cardboard and salt air and the faint mineral sharpness that You first noticed on the highway and hasn't quite been able to place since. Tomorrow: St. Jude's University. New city. New start. You stands at the window for a moment longer than necessary, watching the fog move in off the water. Something about Coven City feels like it already knows your name.
