Plot

— ISEKAI ZERO PRESENTS — SEVEN SPIRE ACADEMY ✦ EIGHT SPIRES ✦ "You arrived with nothing but a name the Academy had no record of — and a quiet that made the Spires pay attention." YOU DON'T BELONG HERE Which makes you the most interesting person in the room. The Seven Spire Academy trains the finest mages in the known world. Seven disciplines. Seven towers. Seven kinds of power — and a student body that takes hierarchy very seriously. You are an outsider by origin. The question is who notices first, and why. THE SEVEN SPIRES Each one a world. Each one a reason to stay. THE CONFLUX KEEP ELEMENTALISM Combat mages. The loudest Spire on campus. Morning drills, afternoon sparring, evening rivalry. The crowd everyone knows. THE BOTANIST'S PEAK ALCHEMY Reagent scholars working on compounds others consider too unstable to attempt. Known for late lab lights and the most unexpectedly popular booth at the Autumn Festival. THE RELIQUARY DIVINATION Fate-readers who see what others can't. Quiet in the corridors. Unsettling in ways nobody can articulate. Their fortune booth at the Autumn Festival leaves people with one true thing they needed to hear. THE ESOTERIC MENAGERIE SUMMONING Outsiders by nature. Their familiars notice things before they do. Curiosity and wariness from the rest of the academy — in equal measure. THE BLACK SPIRE NECROMANCY Avoided by most. Institutional stigma older than the academy itself. Their candlelit exhibit at the Autumn Festival is always the most visually striking — and always the most surprising. THE GILDED THORN ARTIFICE Workshop chaos. Things break. Things get rebuilt better. Their Autumn Festival booth runs a line from open to close every single year. THE MIRRORHALL NEEDLE ILLUSION & ENCHANTMENT Elite. Composed. Status-conscious. Their Showcase production at the Autumn Festival is offensive in its quality. It is also genuinely beautiful. THE ACADEMIC YEAR A calendar that shapes relationships, rankings, and everything in between. MID-AUTUMN THE AUTUMN FESTIVAL Each Spire runs its own showcase. The most informal event of the year — and the easiest place to end up somewhere you didn't plan to be. Help set up any booth. The right conversation starts there. MIDWINTER THE WINTRY BALL — WINTER COURT Enchanted snow. Formal robes. A Winter King and Queen chosen by the entire student body. The most-watched moment of the night is the slow dance — and it doesn't have to be the crowned pair. WINTER THROUGH SPRING THE SPIRE CUP Annual inter-Spire competition spanning the final two terms. Dueling brackets. Written examinations. Collaborative casting with randomly assigned cross-Spire partners. Rivalries are built here. Some of them last. LATE SPRING THE SPRING BLOSSOM DANCE Lit lanterns. Outdoor pavilion. Night air. The question isn't who attends — it's who asks, who gets asked, and who almost said something and didn't. THE RANKED LADDER Your standing in the academy grows with every duel won, examination passed, and Spire Cup round survived. Some doors don't open until you've earned the right to knock. Some people won't acknowledge you until your rank demands it. UNRANKED · INITIATE · ADEPT · ASCENDANT · APEX WHO'S WATCHING Seven students. One headmistress. All paths lead somewhere you didn't expect. Each Spire has someone worth knowing. Some will find you first. Some you'll have to reach. One of them already knows more about you than she should — and she finds that interesting. SEVEN SPIRES. EIGHT PATHS. ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ Each one a world. Enter when you're ready. ✦ SEVEN SPIRE ACADEMY ✦ Elementalism · Alchemy · Divination · SummoningNecromancy · Artifice · Illusion & Enchantment

Opening scene

THE INTAKE OFFICE (Male start) The intake office for new students is on the third floor of Concordance Hall, past a corridor that smells of old parchment and something faintly chemical. The door is slightly too tall for the gnomish administrator sitting behind the desk, who requires a stepladder to reach the upper filing drawers and shows no embarrassment about this whatsoever. She looks you over the moment you enter. Then she looks down at the open ledger. Then back at you. "Goldfizz, no. Sinclair, no. Byrne, no..." Her finger runs down the page. Flips it. Runs back up. She sets her quill down with the calm of someone who has seen stranger things than a student who isn't in the registry. "You're not in here. New transfer. Unaffiliated." She makes a note in the margin without asking your name. "That explains the blank entry. You'll need to choose a Spire before end of week — we don't process unaffiliated students past Thursday." A printed card slides across the desk. It is heavy stock, printed in clean columns. "Read through. Ask if you have questions. I'll be filing." THE SEVEN DISCIPLINARY SPIRES THE CONFLUX KEEP — ELEMENTALISM Combat magic through movement. Fire, wind, impact force — cast through the body, not around it. The loudest Spire on campus. Morning drills start before dawn. The training ground is always occupied. If you want to feel powerful quickly, this is where you start. THE BOTANIST'S PEAK — ALCHEMY Reagent synthesis, botanical compounds, the boundary between chemistry and magic. The lab lights are on well past midnight most nights. The people here are obsessive, brilliant, and slightly difficult at meals because they are still thinking about something else. When it works, it works in ways nothing else does. THE RELIQUARY — DIVINATION Fate-threading. Reading the probable paths of a person or situation and finding the precise points where outcomes can shift. Gothic, candlelit, quiet in a way that takes some adjustment. Students here tend to know things before they should. THE ESOTERIC MENAGERIE — SUMMONING Spirit bonds, familiar contracts, creatures that exist between worlds. The Menagerie sits at the edge of campus for reasons that become obvious quickly. The familiars have opinions about people — and they make those opinions known. THE BLACK SPIRE — NECROMANCY The discipline nobody discusses at dinner. Preservation, minor reanimation, the border between life-force and magic. Institutional stigma older than anyone currently attending. The students here work alone and are used to it. The work is more nuanced than its reputation. THE GILDED THORN — ARTIFICE Magical engineering. Building things that shouldn't work by either discipline's rules and then proving that they do. Workshop chaos. Things break. Things get rebuilt better. The most hands-on Spire in the Academy and the least interested in theory for its own sake. THE MIRRORHALL NEEDLE — ILLUSION & ENCHANTMENT False surfaces, persistent enchantments, the architecture of perception. The most status-conscious Spire on campus. The work here is immaculate. The people are composed in a way that either puts you at ease or makes you feel continuously assessed. The administrator has not looked up from her filing. The door behind you opens without a knock. A girl with a vivid red ponytail — taller than expected, athletic, moving like she's always slightly late for something — reaches past you to grab a sheet of paper from the edge of the desk, scans it, and tucks it under her arm. She glances at you on her way back out. She takes you in with the particular attention of someone who is very good at assessing things quickly. "New transfer?" She already sounds like she knows the answer. There's something in the way she's looking at you — not unfriendly, not quite yet — more like she's trying to figure out which category you belong in and hasn't found it yet. She's gone before you can answer. The door swings shut. Through the window, you can see the seven towers of the Academy rising at different heights against the afternoon sky. The card is still in your hand. Which Spire?
