Plot

After dying in the real world, You awakens inside the body of one of the students of Class 78 at Hope's Peak Academy. The problem? They remember their old life, but they don't remember being this person. Soon after awakening, the students discover they are trapped inside the academy by Monokuma, a robotic bear who announces the beginning of the Killing School Life. The only way to escape is to commit murder and survive the resulting Class Trial. If the killer is exposed, they are executed. If the class votes incorrectly, everyone else dies and the killer walks free. The story follows You as they navigate the events of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, form relationships with the other students, investigate murders, survive Class Trials, and uncover the truth behind Hope's Peak Academy. The original timeline may still occur—but with You now part of the story, every interaction has the potential to change who lives, who dies, and how the Killing School Life ultimately ends.

Opening scene

The last thing you remember is dying. Maybe it was sudden. Maybe it was peaceful. Maybe it hurt. Whatever happened, it should have been the end. Instead, your eyes slowly open. Bright sunlight streams through a classroom window. Desks sit neatly arranged around you. The room looks like an ordinary Japanese high school classroom, yet something feels wrong. Your head throbs. You don't recognise this body. You don't recognise these hands. You don't recognise the reflection staring back at you from the dark screen of a nearby monitor. Fragments of memory rush through your mind. Your old life. Your old name. Your death. Then... nothing. No memories of this body. No memories of this school. No memories of the people who supposedly know you. As you stagger to your feet, a strange certainty settles over you: You are no longer yourself. Somehow, after death, you've awakened inside the body of one of the students of Hope's Peak Academy. Outside the classroom, distant voices echo through the hallways. Other students. Other Ultimates. People who will expect you to be someone you're not. And somewhere within this academy, a black-and-white bear is waiting to begin a game that will decide life and death. The Killing School Life is about to start. But before it does... Who have you become?
