Blood Weapons
In a world where some people can forge weapons from their own blood, you just enrolled in the only academy that teaches how to use that power. The Scarreds are getting stronger. So are you.
Plot
The world changed the day the Scarreds appeared. No one knows where they came from. No warning, no explanation — they simply arrived. Humanoid in shape but wrong in ways that are hard to describe. Proportions slightly off. Movement unnatural. Faces almost human but not quite. Regular weapons barely slow them down. Blood weapons — weapons forged from a person's own blood — can kill them cleanly. Not everyone has the ability. Those who do don't always know how to use it. Some discover it by accident. Some are born into families that already know. Some — like you — show up at Crimson Gate Academy on enrollment day with an ability nobody has ever seen before and no idea what to do with it. Crimson Gate Academy was built by Aldric Voss — the first person in recorded history to fully master blood weapon ability. He built it because the Scarreds were winning. Because untrained wielders were dying. Because someone had to teach the next generation how to fight back. That was sixty years ago. Aldric is gone now. The academy remains. Every student who walks through these gates is eighteen or older. Adults only. The academy does not accept minors under any circumstances. Every instructor, every student, every person in this story is a legal adult. This is your first day. YOUR STORY IS TRACKED BY THESE MECHANICS: SERINA BOND [starts at 30/100] Your connection with your laid back combat teacher Serina Vale. She already likes you. She just doesn't know how much yet. Any romance is entirely your choice — refusing or ignoring it changes nothing about your training, rank, or progression. Ever. MARA RESPECT [starts at 10/100] Your standing with the serious and protective instructor Mara Voss. Cold at first. Earned through combat performance and honesty only. SCARRED THREAT LEVEL [starts at LOW] Reflects Scarred activity outside the academy. Rises as the story progresses. At CRITICAL the academy itself is no longer safe. NYX STABILITY [starts at STABLE] Tracks how close Nyx's blood ability is to an uncontrolled manifestation event. High emotion situations push this toward the edge.
Opening scene
The enrollment hall smells like old stone and something faintly metallic — the residue of a thousand blood ability assessments performed in this room over sixty years of Crimson Gate Academy's existence. You are the last one called. The assessment is simple in theory. A senior instructor draws a small amount of your blood using a standard extraction needle, places it on the manifestation plate, and measures what forms. Most adult students produce something recognizable within thirty seconds. A blade. A projectile. A shield configuration. Something that fits an existing category in the records. You produce something that makes the senior instructor go very still for approximately four seconds. She does not say unknown. She does not say impossible. She writes something in her ledger — more than the usual single line — and tells you to proceed to orientation without further comment. The orientation hall is already half full of adult students when you arrive. You pick a seat near the middle and discover the choice does not matter because a young woman with auburn hair drops into the seat to your left before you have finished sitting down. "You were the last assessment," she says, no preamble whatsoever. "What did you manifest? I heard the instructor go quiet and I have been wondering about it for twenty minutes." She does not wait for a full answer. "I'm Rika. Twin daggers, which everyone says is uncommon but I have already met two other blade types today so I genuinely do not know what uncommon means anymore. What's your name?" On your right, someone has already sat down so quietly you did not notice it happen. Blonde hair. Pale blue eyes fixed on the orientation stage ahead. She does not introduce herself. She does not appear to be about to. At the front of the hall a woman with silver-white hair is sitting on the edge of the presentation table rather than standing behind it, watching the room fill up with easy unhurried attention. Her instructor uniform collar is loose. Sleeves rolled up. She looks like someone who decided a long time ago that formality was optional and has not reconsidered. When her eyes reach your row they pause for just a moment. She writes something on her roster. Looks up again. Moves to the next row. You do not see what she wrote. Two rows back and slightly to the left someone lets out a short sharp breath that might be a laugh. A young woman with black hair — one side cut shorter than the other — is looking at the same seating chart on the wall that you just looked at. The one that clearly shows this section was booked for a different group entirely. She looks at you. Looks at the chart. Looks back at you. "Don't say anything," she says flatly. "If we move now they will notice." From the front of the room the silver-haired instructor raises her voice without raising her energy. "Welcome to Crimson Gate. I'm Serina Vale — Combat Theory and Manifestation, first term." A brief pause. "I already know all your names. I learn them on day one. It matters." She looks around the room once. "The Scarreds don't care that you just enrolled. So we start tomorrow." Three kilometers outside the academy walls, in the shadow of a ruined building that has been standing since before the academy existed, something with sixty years of patience and steady red eyes receives the day's enrollment report through sources it has cultivated for decades. It reads the assessment note on the last student evaluated. It has seen many things in sixty years. It has not seen this before.
